Congrats, thats fucking awesome. Any idea how they got busted? Did a friendly DZ.commer spot your stuff on ebay, or did the cops have some lead about the case? Any word on the possibility of the items that are still missing? I'm assuming they got sold, but you never know. Glad you got your stuff back and those pricks are getting what's comming to them. This only further justifies my vehement dislike of Louisville. That city has fucked me too many times, although never on this large a scale.

Its just, I gotta be at class at 9:00 am, but I'm already half buzzed from the first 40. I guess I'll just cut my losses and save the whole shabang for bowling and 25 cent drafts tomorrow night.
-
Is it a waste? I've got a 40 oz bottle of fine King Cobra Malt Liqour in the fridge. I don't want all 40 oz at the moment, but a taste would be nice. Is it worth it to drink maybe half of the 40 and save the rest for tomorrow, or should I just save the whole thing for another night when I'm feeling more ambitious? Remember, flat beer is still beer too.

Sorry partner, that really sucks. She looks like a beautiful pup in the pictures you put up... Loosing a pet is rough, you (or maybe just I) almost feel like being too upset is silly, but that doesn't make you feel any less empty when a canine member of the family goes... Good luck. Everything, painful or not, passes

questions about adrenaline
ryan_d_sucks replied to aloneinthesky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah. Epinepherine is released in many situations by the body, including exercise--one of the major Healthy People 2010 focus areas. All of the effects you mentioned are possibilities, but as you said I don't see them occuring (atleast not in most reasonably healthy people) from endogenous production of epinepherine and its normal effects on the body. However, it can and does happen to people (mostly those with pre-existing conditions), just like in the case where someone is literally 'scared' to death (MI from sudden surge in epi and subsequent increase in BP, HR, etc), gets extremely angry and has a heart attack, things of that nature, but I doubt epinepherine is the sole chemical responsible for changes in the body in those situations. Epinepherine surges during exercise, so what this lady said could be applied to going jogging just as well as skydiving. So, it COULD happen, but most likely if the effects of the adrenaline rush were going to shorten your life, it would do so by a single quick insult, like an MI, CVA, or something along those lines. The minutes off your life thing is absurd, and I can't believe someone backed that statement with 'I'm pre-med.' FYI, a person could consider themselves 'pre-med' for a semester by taking nothing but art history classes and one chemistry or physics class. Pre-med is exactly that, its pre-any true medical knowledge. The only long lasting effect I could think of from jumping would possibly be hypertension, but the amount of stress-relief that many seem to get from it almost makes me thing the hypertension would be fleeting. However it could be a problem for a weak heart. -
Hey buddy, I totally do get that. I think you misconstrued my point completley. Perhaps this question was too much of a faux pau to put out there for people who don't know me to answer. However, never in my post did I hint that I expect anyone to be my failproof safety net. I know why the waivers are there, I think about them, and I sign them. And I know that when I'm unstable with no pull at 2000 feet, its on me. I'm only interested, see it as voyeristic or not, to hear stories from people who have been here much longer, and seen much more than myself. I'm only interested to find out further what could go wrong, so that in the event it does, I CAN be my own help. The reason I posted this in the instructor forum is because obviously students and low experience jumpers are the most dependent, and least self-sufficient. However, this post could go for anyone, instructors, other jumpers, pilots, etc... The original intent (whether expressed well or not) was to find out when your actions have put someone else in danger.. Because that is a much different feeling than screwing yourself, and it is a much different situation to try to control (because in many ways it is beyond your control). Answer if you want to, and obviously most of you don't. But at the very least understand this is only an attempt to learn, whether or not it be pleasant to think about, read, or see. This was not intended to become a finger pointing, whistle blowing measure of incompetence, and I think by this post that that is clear enough. Ryan.

Dammit! Some of my friends, my girlfriend, and myself were all hanging out at my girlfriend's house. We had a badass dinner, listened to some good music, good conversation, and everything. Then one of my friends broke out a bottle of Sake, and we started taking Sake bombs. My girlfriend complained that her stomach wasn't feeling good and didn't drink any. We all pounded about 5 Sake Bombs in about 30 minutes, came out to find her on the couch sick as a dog. We had big plans to go to my apartment, continue bombing, meet up with some other folks and whatnot... But my girlfriend is too sick, so I had to just usher them out on their way and stay in with her. I feel terrible for her. Her night is certainly worse than mine, but damn the vibes and group dynamic was top notch. It sucks to have big expectations that get turned to nothing so quickly. Now I'm just sitting here, watching Scrubs with her, and moving my legs out of her way when she needs to get to the bathroom to puke. It sucks! Things were going so good tonight too... Oh well. Now I'm half buzzed, in for the night, and trying to no avail to make someone feel better. It all passes. Atleast I'm not in her shoes, right? Anyone else's Saturday night not all they had hoped for?

Hahaha, wow. While some of that was kind of interesting and readable, these 2 are so laughable it really makes me question the integrity of the entire list... - Cannabis use causes severe permanent brain damage This is an absurd statement, especially since it lacks any sort of information as to how it causes 'severe brain damage,' and what exactly constitutes 'severe brain damage.' I don't smoke pot, but I have in the past. I have lots of friends who currently do, and have been for a while. I've seen people start, stop, and keep going. I have never seen any long lasting decline in their mental functioning from smoking pot. This sounds like a 5th grade Guidance councilor's anti-drug class slogan. - If youve ever drunk to the stage where you have woken up not able to remember a thing of the night before, that means you were probably only 2-3 drinks away from killing yourself as the part of the brain below where your memory is handled is the part thhat controls your breathing and heart rate Hah. Wow. WRONG. Once you have had one blackout you become more prone to blacking out. Chronic drinkers actually lose some of their tolerance as they continue drinking over time, as well. Therefore, really heavy drinkers will get drunk off of less alcohol, and will 'black out' before they really achieve a high level of intoxication. I know some people who will have a 6 pack, be decently drunk, and not remember a damn thing the next day. In no way were they on the brink of death, and 2 or 3 more drinks wouldn't have pushed them over the edge. Besides that, have you ever blacked out and not thrown up? I have, and I've seen it happen. Your body will throw up the booze, or try to expel it long before death approaches. I didn't read through all 5 pages of this thread, because those 2 points were just so ridiculous I had to immediatley post. Sorry if its been thoroughly hashed out by now.

So if researching and getting started with skydiving has taught me one thing, it has taught me that nobody is perfect. There is absolutley no infallible person. Your instructor is not perfect, and shit can and does happen. That being said, have any of you, as an INSTRUCTOR screwed up badly? I don't mean having screwed yourself, but screwed up putting your student in danger? This post was prompted by viewing this video: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=2191&string=asshole Do any of you have any stories of personal mistakes that you feel really lucky didn't end badly, or hurt your student? Do any of you have experiences working with another instructor who was acting somewhat negligble? I know it may not be the most self-flattering thing to post, but we can all learn something from each other's mistakes. Ryan Edited to fix link*

I'm sort of confused and would love to hear more. So this was not a release dive right? Does that normally occurr on AFF 3? So when you exited, did the instructors have a solid grip on you? Did the separation occur during the exit, or some time into freefall? Had you already accomplished some of the dive flow and then realized they weren't holding you? And hypothetically, if you had pulled, what would happen? I assume you wouldn't be passed on the level, because you wouldn't have done any of the predetermined goals. Would the student then have to pay to retake the level, or would it be an instrcuctor screw up? I guess it might be in part determined on why and how the separation occurred. Congratulations on the pass though.

Hey man, I had all 4 of mine out December 21st. I authored a thread on here about dry sockets as well... The best advice I can give you is, go back in time and choose not to have them removed. Haha.. Seriously. For me, the first few days were alright. I just took the painkillers regularly (until they weren't even fun anymore) and most importantly, the anti-inflammatory (gave the most relief). If your doc only gave you an analgesic painkiller, I would reccomend popping some NSAID like Ibuprofen (but talk to your doctor first). Anyway man, it might suck now, but if you get dry socket it will suck A LOT worse soon. It was the most intense pain I've ever felt. I usually awoke around 4-5 am (about the time all the drugs had worn off) in excruciating pain. It makes sense, because its an exposed nerve ending. Be careful not to 'swish' too hard with the salt water rinses, as that can remove the blood clot and give you one or more dry sockets. Also, don't do the stuff they said not to: smoke, drink booze (thins the blood causing the clot to dislodge), or puff your cheeks too hard. Man, its been 19 days, and I'm still fishing food out of my holes, and popping anti-inflammatorys. Some people have a real easy time with theirs, some don't. Trying your best to prevent any of the complications like dry socket is the best advice I could give. Good Luck. Ryan

Well, not necessarily ANYWHERE, but pretty much... My girlfriend's present to me is "a trip, anywhere, anytime" Of course where we go will dictate when and how long we go. I'm from the US, I've never been to any continent other than North America. Any suggestions? I was so caught off guard I don't know where to even start thinking... Unfortunatley no skydiving on this trip, as she's not very fond of it, and I don't have my A yet. So skydiving aside, anyone have any suggestions? A few ideas she threw out were: Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Germany, and Australia. I don't know where to start...

convincing the parents
ryan_d_sucks replied to IcarusNeededAAD's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Just curious, as I am in the same type of finacnial situation (schooling, not jumping) as the OP, minus the hostile thoughts of the parents (more just a general dislike)... Who was your emergency contact during this time? I have thought long and hard about the 'going behind their back' type of thing, and because it is my money, I know they can't really complain. The only thing that sort of stalls me is the emergency contact. I wouldn't really trust that responsibility to any of my friends here at school. A call from the DZ to my unaware folks saying I'm fucked would be a really unpleaseant, unexpected surprise.. It almost seems better (although I wouldn't necessarily know anyhow) if they atleast knew it was a possibility, rather than have them blindsided by a call from the DZO. Maybe I should just be extra careful not to fuck up? I don't want to spin this thread off into a whole different discussion, but was this ever an issue for you, and how did you approach it? I've got $180 in cash hidden in my apartment so I don't spend it, and I should be starting static line within the next two weeks. Ryan -
That's the fucking truth right there. From May of 2006 until September 2006 I went from 245 to 194. I'm still working for about 10 more pounds until I'm done losing. There is no quick fix. Its all about dedication, pushing yourself, and will power. Part of me scoffs at the commercials that come on television for 'easy, quick weight loss' because that's just not how it happens. Sucks that some people's plight is a marketing opportunity for some asshat selling something that we all know won't work. Now part of my commitment to maintain and continue weight loss is that when its time to buy my own gear, larger canopies (for the 1:1 loading) cost more $$$$!!

I've been browsing for a while, but it seems like I just keep finding the same videos over and over... Anyone have any links to some good videos on there? I am not so sure if this one is 'good' but its definatley one of the scariest parachuting vids I've ever seen.. Post some links if you've got them.. http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=1974&string=spinning%20mal if that one doesn't work you should be able to see it here: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/uploads/doublemalfunction.wmv

I have found Emergen-C to be very effective when I think I am starting to get sick. You can find them at CVS or Walgreens, or places like that. Drink 2 of those in a row and maybe 1 or 2 the next day. Its saved me a few times for sure.

Man that was rad!! They didn't have Fandango, so I just picked up cutaway. Then the lady at the register got pissed because this dude's card wouldn't work and it took like 10 minutes to sort out. Instead of getting pissed and upset she just yelled out 'everyone in line gets 1 free rental!!!' so I ran over and picked up point break as well. I'm not expecting much in the way of intellectual stimulation from either of these two, but hopefully I'll be entertained. Anyone know a good program to watch .avi files? I want to see that scene from fandango on skydivingmovies.com

I don't know if it will bring me any luck, but it cured my brutal hangover almost instantly. I woke up at 10:00 am, walked downstairs in my friend's house and his dad shoved a bowl of it in my face and told me it would help. It did. And it was delicious...

I'm tired as hell from last night. I think I'm going to stay in and watch a movie. Should I go rent Cutaway or Point Break? I want to see a skydiving movie, any other suggestions? I'm probably going to rent whatever the first reply is...

What is the purpose of such a list? The purpose is to accidentally leave it laying around/visible for your now Significant Other to find and start a hellacious fight over... Atleast, that's what happened with the one I made a few years back...

Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk
ryan_d_sucks replied to ryan_d_sucks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wow! I posted about this movie earlier, but didn't get around to watching it until recently. Anyone who has seen this should be able to back me up... WOW! The skydiving/BASE footage in this movie is phenomenal! I just can't say enough! Has anyone else on here seen this movie? What did you think? The freeflying in that movie was incredible, and the skyball shots were cool too. I have to give some serious credit to anyone who was in any way involved with that movie. Sorry if this post is in the wrong forum. -
Squeak should become an international Tim Tam dealer
