I would like to tell you a bit more about God
HeadCone replied to DropDgorgeous's topic in Speakers Corner
Speakers Corner is also the place for topics so controversial that people can't control themselves enough to not start a flame-fest (i.e., politics, guns and religion). The OP isn't allowed to post this in the non-debate (if I can call it that) forum that is The Bonfire. --Head -- Turn off the internet! The length of the line is 2.00 miles. Indian Lake was apparently created by damming and flooding a valley. Therefore, it's an irregular shape. Your 1.5 and 3.0 estimates jive with what I get: At the very tippy closest, I can get 1.5 miles. At the very tippy furthest, I can get 2.85 miles. To the very immediate south is another dammed lake called Lake Stonycreek. At the very tippy nearest of that lake, I can get 2.1 miles. At the very tippy furthest (which extends into the the poor quality imagery), I can get 3.8 miles. Nearest other lakes: Quemahoning Reservior: 8 miles to the North. Lake Somerset: 8.5 miles to the East. Shawnee Lake: 14 miles to the West. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Exactly. The people who looked at this and the first thing they thought was "penis" are the real perverts. I wonder if it's really most or a lot of people complaining or just a vocal minority. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Here are some thoughts I have since I was finally able to pose a question today to someone I know. First is that my initial impression was that this question is extremely easy. I thought that most people would (even should) know the answer. But then I asked someone who I know who is in his 60s, never took any astronomy classes in high school, never attended college, and never had any interest in astronomy. His answer was a guess at the moon. Got it right, but it was a guess. That actually surprised me. Then I recall that I have watched a bunch of episodes of "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" and remember that every once in a great while I don't know the answer to one of the "really easy" questions (the ones at or below the first guaranteed money level ($1000 in the U.S.)). These always seem to be some nursery rhyme or saying that never in my life I've heard before. Now I realize that someone who was never taught nor never had any interest in astronomy just may not know the answer to this. My next thought is that I wonder if most people in the room weren't reading or understanding the question correctly. Even though the question was asking about what goes around the earth, people were thinking it backwards and thinking about what does the earth go around. I think that might explain why practically no one voted for Mars or Venus. Perhaps that 56% mostly knows the structure of the solar system but got the question backwards. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I actually started doing this because of getting burned too many times trying to be a good driver. Particularly at one specific intersection where "the other guy" is coming out of a neighborhood known to have a lot of senior citizens (i.e., slow drivers). I do it with absolutely no remorse whatsoever. Oh, and "the other guy" can combat you by "going NUTS" themselves. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I can think of one. I call it the NUTS technique or going NUTS (Non Use of the Turn Signal) Zipp0's post (#18) in this thread hints to me that I may not be the first one to think of calling it this. It's any general situation where you want to gain the advantage on someone by making them think you're not turning. A specific example: You're driving down the road and want to make a right turn. There's someone coming from the opposite direction. Since they’re a little closer to that turn, you see they've already started to slow down and signal to turn. You think to yourself, "I don't want to get behind that jerk. He's gonna drive too slow." At this point, if you start also start to slow down and signal, the other person will think, "I don't want to get behind that jerk. He's gonna drive too slow." Because you’re slowing down and will take longer to get there, the other person will have time to turn and get in front of you. So instead, purposefully *don’t* use your turn signal (and perhaps brake a little later) to make it look like you’re going to drive straight through. This will make the other person think, "He’s not turning. I better wait for him to go by." So now you get to make the turn first and get in front. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Na, I have heard some stories from other people though. Anyway, when I first watched the video I was outraged like most others here were. Then I read some of the posts in the SC thread, took a step back, and watched the video again which changed my mind. I still think the cop was a jerk about it, but I don't think he should lose his job over this. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Canada to get telemarketer "Do not call" registry
HeadCone replied to Richards's topic in The Bonfire
The U.S. one works for me. I don't get telemarketing calls, but still get the occasional charity. As for dealing with it, all I would do is say loudly and firmly "not interested" (right over top of anything they might be saying) and immediately hang-up. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Extreme physical violence? Where? If someone's the victim of extreme physical violence, they're spending time in the hospital. I doubt any of those kids needed a band-aid. Threw them to the ground? You mean at 2:07 when the kid yelled "What the fuck is wrong (with you?)?", made a lame-ass attempt to charge the cop, the cop grabbed him, and they fell over because the other cop pulled him back by the shirt? Yeah, that was, uh, real vicious. I'm guessing they won't go skateboarding there again. As far as the cop goes, he did have an attitude which was wrong one to get the kids the comply with what he wanted them to do. Frankly, he was being a dick. But then again, conveniently for the skateboarders, we don't have the video of what led up to this. --Head -- Turn off the internet! It seems like the FAA is just getting childishly petty with the controllers. "You won't accept our terms? Well, your pants have too many wrinkles. Go home and change!" As others have said, the controllers are stressed enough. They don't need this bullshit. --Head -- Turn off the internet! How do I vote with my wallet? Not flying at all isn't always feasible especially on longer trips. Switching airlines/airports just means dealing with the same shit at a different place. --Head -- Turn off the internet! If there was one, they'd be worth looking into. Assuming the flight would have to be cancelled because they couldn't shuttle people off and then back on later, that would no doubt happen. I'm glad your situation worked out for you. I think the current system is broken and can't believe there's no better way. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Maybe they could shuttle them off the plane instead of taking up a gate. Or maybe airlines could stop trying to force flights that they know are going to be sitting on the tarmac for hours. What's unacceptable to the point of being outright bullshit is allowing airlines to hold people for as long as they like just because you never know when the weather will break. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I think passengers should have the right to be left off the plane after a certain amount of time passes. Once they start boarding a timer starts. After, oh 4 hours just to throw a number out there, if the plane hasn't taken off yet, then they let you off. --Head -- Turn off the internet! It's even better to be back in the airport terminal than to be stranded on a plane for 8 hours. "You gotta realize the frustration — you can look out the window and you can see, there's the gate, and if you let us off the plane, we can walk there," said Farrell, 48, of Brooklyn. I think these people would have been ok with just getting off the plane rather than forcing the flight. --Head -- Turn off the internet!
