Omg, is that really a myth? Who knew? It's the speed of the spinning wheels that provides the lift, not the silly wings... Obviously Bernuolli was an idiot I meant to ask this yesterday but got too busy then forgot. It seems clear from the responses that the myth comes from not understanding that it's airspeed, not ground speed, that will get a plane to lift off. I'm confused, however, over the wording above. Is that talking about a situation where the plane is basically stationary relative to the ground but has a conveyor belt whipping past underneath at take-off speed? If so, what's the myth? That the plane will take off or won't take off? --Head -- Turn off the internet! Flatulence ban for club pensioner A social club in Devon has banned a 77-year-old man from breaking wind while indoors. Maurice Fox received a letter from Kirkham Street Sports and Social Club in Paignton asking him to consider his actions, which "disgusted" members. Mr Fox, a club regular for 20 years, said: "I am happy to oblige them, there is no problem. I do get a bit windy - I am an old fart now." He said he had to leave the club about three times a night. In its letter to the retired bus driver, the club said: "After several complaints regarding your continual breaking of wind (farting) while in the club, would you please consider that your actions are considered disgusting to fellow members and visitors. "You sit close to the front door, so would you please go outside when required. So please take heed of this request." Mr Fox, who lives in nearby Princess Street, said the letter was a surprise because he had been given no verbal warning. "I think someone has complained about the noise. I am a loud farter, but there is no smell. "I do not think it [the letter] is unreasonable, you get ladies in there." Mr Fox also spends two days a week at the nearby Palace Place club, but said he had no complaints about flatulence there. The club said there was no one available for comment. EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant. DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair ... must try this on their bed. DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan. DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth. DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer". More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage. DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time... -- Turn off the internet! I believe that everyone has a certain amount of goodness, as well as, a certain amount of badness in them. You could average it out and dumb it down to a single number ranging from -10 (pure evil) to +10 (pure good) per person. With that, I believe: * No one's -10 or +10. * If you add up all the numbers from all the people of the world, you'll get a result near zero. That means for every asshole, there's a good person and vice versa. * People tend to linger on the negative more than the positive. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Jury awards father $2.9M in funeral case Jury awards father $2.9M in funeral case Jury awards grieving father $2.9 million in verdict against military funeral protesters By ALEX DOMINGUEZ Associated Press Writer | AP Oct 31, 2007 A grieving father won a $2.9 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals out of a belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. Albert Snyder of York, Pa., sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified damages after members staged a demonstration at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq. Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags." A number of states have passed laws regarding funeral protests, and Congress has passed a law prohibiting such protests at federal cemeteries. But the Maryland lawsuit is believed to be the first filed by the family of a fallen serviceman. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. It's hard for me to imagine a scenario where the plane is obviously going down and staying with it is certain death, but yet the plane is flying stable enough and long enough for you to get at your rig, pull it out of the gear back, put it on, make way for the door, open it, and get out with enough altitude to deploy. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Potentially dumb question here, but what do you consider to be a social network website? I assume things like MySpace. What about forums? Are the dropzone.com forums considered a social network web site? What if I'm exactly 36 years old (or exactly 18 years old)? --Head -- Turn off the internet! Obama showing his sense of patriotism and respect
HeadCone replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Others have already pointed out that this was possibly on purpose for the same reason he doesn't wear a flag pin. This story also makes that connection (and has the video): http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Obama_doesnt_put_hand_over_heart_1022.html I can see the point that patriotism should be about how you treat people and the ideals that you hold and not about wearing a pin or how you stand during the NA. While I don't think he's unpatriotic, I do think this is a stupid way of making the point. He fails to see how important simple gestures can be to people. On the singing: It's horrid and embarrassing. The further away a singer/player gets from the traditional singing/playing, the more they suck. I've only ever heard one exception: Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I have when I was new to ATMing. I was thinking about something else and put the card in, logged in, entered money, got money, and then just left the machine without the card. I got in my truck which was parked right there and then drove up to the red light which was also right there. Fortunately, there were some good kids around who saw what I did, heard the machine beeping, grabbed the card, and returned it to me while I was waiting at the light. Yeah, I felt like an ass. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Join Citizens United Negating Technology For Life And People's Safety! http://www.citizensunitednegatingtechnology.org/

Student Suing Dropzone A Few Years Back
HeadCone replied to aaron111533's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did some searching. I found an OverLawyered.com article which mentions the article: "Company Sued Over Skydiver's Fall", AP/Fox News, July 25, 2001. The link to the FOX site comes back with a Page Not Found. However, googling "Company Sued Over Skydiver's Fall" came back with this result: http://www.makeithappen.com/jumps/news/news195.html It doesn't have the article, but suggests an e-mail address to get it. Then, to be nosey, I bumped up the number in the URL: http://www.makeithappen.com/jumps/news/news196.html This doesn't display an article either but rather a similar message for an obviously related article. I'm throwing the BS flag on that one. Yep. Me too. I didn't mean to present the list as statements of fact. They're just Google results and I generally didn't go past the results page. It's funny/odd what some people think is safer than driving a car. --Head -- Turn off the internet! Comparing the safety of things to driving is pretty common. Here are the top 10 results from googling "safer than driving a car" (with the quotes): The airline industry likes to point out that, despite some passengers' apprehension, flying in an airliner is actually safer than driving a car. And if she attends 100 orgies in her lifetime, the odds of getting AIDS is 0.001%, which is 1000X safer than driving a car. Riding a motorcycle is safer than driving a car because riders see more, evade better, are more attentive, and assume less. Based on accidents per hour of driving, riding a bike is safer than driving a car. So whenever I tell someone that climbing is safer than driving a car they look at me like a weirdo. Flying a light aircraft will soon be as easy - and safer than - driving a car, according to aviation experts. It all combines into a recipe for disaster, in spite of the long-held belief that flying is safer than driving in a car. ... Data on safety when it comes to the small air taxi industry and small planes in general is yet to be measured, but there is a trend: even though commercial air travel in general is four times safer than driving a car, the small personal plane and/or charter plane presents an accident rate that is 7 times higher than driving a car. LAPD: ORANGE LINE SAFER THAN DRIVING A CAR ... A day after the Metro Orange Line suffered its seventh collision - a minor crash caused by a motorist running a red light - the LAPD said Wednesday that the busway is safer than driving on San Fernando Valley streets. Besides, travelling by buses is safer than driving A CAR. Mile for mile, riding a bus is more than 10 times safer than driving a car. I don't think some of those people know wtf they're talking about. --Head -- Turn off the internet! First Jump: AFF or Tandem?
HeadCone replied to CupCakeBatter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just wanted to throw my vote in for doing a tandem first since that's what I tell anyone who tells me they're interested in skydiving. It's just as good of a jump as any other and a great way to make a first jump since you don't have to worry about doing any student drills. Of coarse there's added cost so there's nothing wrong with going straight into training. I'll let the experts debate whether or not doing a tandem first is a help or hindrance to training but I really doubt it makes all that much of a difference. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I don't have any general dislike for reality shows. In fact, there are a few that I really like. This show, however, reeks of "crock of shit". I don't believe for a second that there are no adults what-so-ever involved in or having an influence on what happens in the show. --Head -- Turn off the internet! I've been signed up for two weeks now and must be doing it wrong because I don't really get the point of this game. As near as I can tell, all the fun is just in forming gangs and attacking other players. That's fine, I guess, but isn't there more to it than that? Training is boring. Committing crimes is boring. The gambling is boring. I'm only at level 22 so maybe there's more to do in the higher level ports? Right now, my game time is spent making sure I do all the once a day stuff (points, lucky dip, digging, slot machine) and then doing some crimes and training trying to level up. I'm just clicking on links, it's not engaging at all. Are there quests or challenges or more interesting things to do that I'm missing? --Head -- Turn off the internet! Sue the Airline! That should stop the weather diversion!
HeadCone replied to Rookie120's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, good on them for recognizing this as a problem and making an attempt to make their customers most comfortable. I do point out, however, that they do leave open the possibility of a lengthy wait on the plane and do hint at there being a problem with the system as a whole: "Air Traffic Control hold times can change significantly and a window of opportunity may open, so sometimes it makes sense to board the aircraft even though the anticipated delay may be an hour or more." Of coarse that sounds like CYA text which would be smart to have in there. --Head -- Turn off the internet! One point I didn't see mentioned (may have missed it) is the level of importance of the message. Perhaps you have something to tell someone, but it's not so important that you want them to stop what they're doing and talk to you but you do want them to get the message quickly. Assuming that the recipient pretty much always has their phone on but isn't always sitting at their computer, then the difference between calling, texting, and e-mailing is that calling is quickest, e-mailing is slowest, and texting is in-between. --Head -- Turn off the internet!
