Skydiving safer then driving?
lekstrom10k replied to AndyMan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have never had a skydiver passing me in freefall yelling into a cell phone or a soccermom turning to yell at a kid an wander under me at a critical time. As the saying goes "I,ll take my chances in the air" -
We had an outside heater at the DZ on Propane. If it ran out of gas it too was a bitch to start.but it had a pilot light. Does yours have an electric one or a visible flame? We would sometimes disconnect the flexible line at the water tank and have someon turn on the gas at the fuel tank for a quick burst This way you know gas is at the regulator. turn it off again reconnect it then try again. If you get a few $1.00 store Grill lighters its easier to light the pilot. hold the flame on the thermo-couple too . hold the pilot thing down until it is on good rotate the knob to burn the main burners should light then . Be catreful you have it turned down first or at the designated lighting area on the knob. Our outside on went out a lot

Will you accept a classic to-be. "The Christmas Story". The BB-gin was made in Plymouth MI. I bought mine at the factory in 1955. I havent nailed down the year it is supposed to be but I am guessing 1938 or 39. There are no TV,s but nothing about the pending WW11 coming up. Saving scrap metal and such. I saw something about it being in the Cleveland area. I can still watch it a few times every X-Mas

"Doing a good job around here is like wetting your dark pants .It gives you a warm feeling but no one notices. Poor Chuck. really miss Schultz

I finally got to nit-pik both Taco-Bells pretty pathetic. There is one out about Babe-Bell, It was red wrapped some kind of food or candy. The very pretty girl sitting in the back of a Porter is eating one with 3 guys watching. She reaches in and grabs 3 more and tosses them out the door. The 3 ga-ga guys dive out after them . I would like to know how they got one of them to change into a white jump suit in free-fall to be off the right leg of the one trying to catch the thing?. I never saw the ad other than stop motion so what is Babe-bell anyway. I am from MI and its not here

The on I remember had almost "Ballon Suit " arms and legs Seems it had an SST rig so you could put in a number in the reserve cap to keep track of your slot on 6 or 8 point formations etc. . WIth all the same shapes it helped

Just for your information any Heat treat shop has rockwell tester . Be sure you are using the same scale as th certs. "C" is the most common. After 6:00 PM or so the bosses go home and the night shift might do it for free.

I had 2 Delta11-s They both had a British Army Demo Team steering mods done on them . One for sure was taking off the last "OSI" wrap and move the velcro on it plus the binding tape to the last line stow. I never cut away in 120 jumps and would take it any wind. ceiling or landing area. One I had was "BIG" Bill Weber's I would do a stand-up in the peas while he never landed it with cutaways. If you need any more info ,let me know.

I finally got a call from Dave . He hasnt heard or seen her in years. He said her last known address was Washington MI. Its a small town between Utica and Romeo North of Detroit around 26 Mile road. Thats in reference to 8 Mile being the northern border of Detroit. Just like in the Eminem Movie. I have a few others to try hope we can do better P.S. wasnt her last name Neuman,?

I remember the stamp well .It was the same as the magnet guys you planned your jumps with. I remember a guy at Richmond using the stamp in his big comment area log book.He spent quit a while putting all the forty people doing rotating 10-way diamonds redocks to a large 40 way diamond , I asked what he was doing. He said "I log what we planned not what we got." I said "Wouldnt it have been easier to show a 6-way then you taking it out like a bowling ball to never rebuild again".Ah yes I remember when you had to be tough to be a skydiver. By the way are you only counting active time in the sport as my D-3001 was issued in 1970

As Terry said it was the transistion to the first rings with the harness slot built in. You would take a dial caliper {not to many digitals out yet}. and measure parallel to the risers then 90 to the risers to check for distortion. If not to specs it could stretch enough to not let the the second ring pass through "OOPS" It was back as far as 1980 and part of repack procedures. Some people would use abrasive cut-off wheels and water soaked rags to cover up things. The replacement was a pretty neat device like a ring with an old harnees riser sepreablr link under it. It almost made it look legal if you put a third canopy on for intentional cut-aways. If you change anything you have violated the T.S.O. as written then if anything happened the old lawyer shot gun goes into effect. Why did the rigger do this/ Why did the pilot allow this guy into his plane as he is responsible for antything falling out . why did the airplane owner let this guy get in the plane without T'.S.O. gear why did the DZO allow this and why did the airport owner let the DZO let the plane owner let the pilot let the rigger let jumper get the mod in the first place. Also the kid mowing the lawn that allowed the plane to taxi by on the incident day.So to me it seems obvious just get rid of lawyers instead.

I havent heard from her since Dave Sauve had the meet at Mason in 1969. We got T-shirts that said "I survived the Mason meet "17 of 22 went to the hospital and the shirt had a guy with a broken arm and leg. She made her first square jump there and landed TFFTM. I'll call dave and see if he still knows her where abouts.Hopefully I can get it for you.

Almost every C-182 I jumped had doors in 1967. Usually at permenant DZ-s. though. One DZ had a C-182 fly out door on and pull pins. Mean while a van with a gutted camper trailer showed up with the gear . I really dont understand the whole issue. The pilot complies with the manufacturer that agrees with the FAA's determenation, case closed. Since when is it the right of a non-pilot jumper to decide whats best for an airlpane.I agree about 1972 was the first time you could take the back seat out. With the seat belt mod you can finally drop four jumpers Add a jump step you were in business We also had a U-206 without a door in 1970 ,it was fun on take-off kneeling forward in the open door PS : Mark flew a PAC-750. at Midwest Free-fall in MI last summer, Still proud to jump anything he flies.

The only trouble with the girl under canopy is the lack of riser seperation . The toggles are stowed and risers are together to lift straight up, no slider either.Any one remember the "CHEERS" episode when they went to jump? It's as real as that Same C-47 with the wrong door off as the fisrt one.I dont remember any C-47 being that quiet and no wind noise.

Post the common innaccuracies on TV that bug you
lekstrom10k replied to Twoply's topic in The Bonfire
If you get a chance check out "DEER HUNTER" one scene they are in a bar in up-state New York or PA the next they are captured in the water jail . The next one guy is a SFC with 21 + years of service stripes an 8 or 9 years combat stripes. then they go back in the nick of time to watch the other guy blow his brains out doing russian roulette. Did he really play for all those years? Also how can the "A_TEAM" only be able to shoot bullets into the ground in front of the on rushing bad guys. Werent they a "CRACK COMMANDO" team as said on the intro. -

If you ever saw "Starskey and Hutch" you would hear the Torino burn rubber in all four gears upon leaving .Kind of hard to do when it was an automatic. Also when any car stops it screaches.Try it some time without breaking your nose on the steering wheel. Try to make your hand go "Woosh" like in the karate movies. How can a copper covered bullet make sparks when it hits anything. Are the staff on "ER" the only ones that get to wear the same gloves on every patient. Any where else you change for each one.I am also capable of deciding what is funny without a canned laughter tape telling me. You guys arent old enough to watch Roy Rogers get 28 shots out of a six-gun and never re load.If you are into movies with planes try to catch the call numbers on it then listen to the controllers and pilots version.Old crime movies the cop stuck a pencil down the bore of a pistol so not to smudge the prints. Almost ever "CSI" show they toss it back and forth .then get perfect prints. just a few of my observations. -
I retired a bungee pilot chute to Sandy Reid at Rigging Inovations. He wanted to see what 2300 jumps did to it.He also wanted to show his rigging students what it looked like.I also did an IAD course dtudent training jump and the pilot and new IAD-I wondered if I was ok with exiting a 4000 with it. I never had any trouble with them and cant figure the beef.I have made many H&P's with mine no problem. Who ever started saying they were bad probably cant bowl without their lucky socks on alley 13 either. let alone skydive

When I was rigging at Midwest Parachute there was a shadow board, Unless every tool covered the painted place you werent suppossed to seal. When Jump Shack made the first "SST's" the last word of the directions were "COUNT YOUR TOOLS". Back then rounds were packed on a table John was left handed and it took a while to figure ouy why the sequence seemed so odd as he was packing in the opposite direction. One you never see any more was the NB-6 with the two pin holes in the pilot chute cone. That caused way to many problems.

Wait until you get a 4foot9inch and 85 lbs that decides to go fetal on exit. I too am not short and if you cant get their legs bent bent back quick your going to have fun.

The movie was in reference to the biggest hoax ever played on the world by the Beatles. They had people smoking banana peels with directions on how to cook them and smoke the residue. No one would admit they never got high and all said "LIKE WOW MAN BITCHING STUFF MAN". They all kept the hoax going for fear of peer pressure Bet the Beatles are all still laughing every time they see a banana even in heaven for the two.

My wife TIVOD Despert Housewives on Sunday It was on at 45 minutes of the show. The plane in flight is something like a Kodiak but has no country or call sign numbers to see. Airtwardo got to jump one like it but I couldnt see the sliding outside door. I just reran the ad and finally figured why the C-47 didnt look right. They removed the rear cargo door and probably put the tail wheel on an oil drum trick to make it look like level flight. Most DZ's just take the passenger door out of the front cargo door to jump. Most pilots say its to squirrley to fly with both cargo doors off. The jump suits have tape over the DZ's lettering. The rigs are like old wonderhogs vectors. "Skydive" is written under the door but might not be real nor any floater bars. It might be just water color paint like "MR DOUGLAS " got for a WW11 movie .

Sorry I didnt get back sooner. I called Jim but never got a call back. OK I'll just see him at the DZ this week end no luck . I asked another packer who watched him. He said all the pack jobs were hung on a hook flaked no nose roll just oushed into the center . Then thrown on rhe ground tail rolled and stuffed in the bag.I dont know how much thi differs from yuor s but it works fine

A jumper, rigger, packer and all around nice guy from Kentuckey said Teva's with socks are Yankee boots. My Tevas are over 5 years old with 2500 jumps on them and are a littlr rank I'm told. I wear them in the winter too They have 8 jumps on frozen lakes. The second worst smelling thing in the world is a human body burning. The worst is when its yours. After jumpoing white smoke and welding for 40 years I know. Sometimes you just cant get away in time.

Really, how important is water training?
lekstrom10k replied to jaybwise's topic in Safety and Training
After making over 30 water jumps I have never had a canopy drop on me or even close. Somebody added the nerd factor into and came up with the BS now in SIM.There isnt one word about lack of depth perception. How about being way to cool and cutaway just above the water to wow the whuffos. They usually are amazed in the video of how far up they were just before they got knocked out. Lucky boats are required and rescue people. After doing demo jumps into the Detroit River with a 7 moh current we thought we didnt need to check it out a the shore. What a surprise when we got to the gazebo to present the waterproof certificate. There was a big sign screwed to the railing thar said "Do not swim here because the under tow is to great". Ready to kill the demo organizer. You can do a pops hit and rock accuracy trick on your leg and chest straps.though
