Nah, there are plenty of folks that enjoy solo flights. I think it's maybe a "techie" thing in some cases, but in the end it's all about what you like. I am a very social person, so flocking is my game. I will also not "skydive" solo unless it's a hop and pop for swoop practice. Chuck

1(missed phone call from Kris and company): 5:0 It was windy here all weekend. Couldn't jump my AFF students, so instead we drank like vikings on Saturday night. Jason Harris of the GK 8-way team got married Saturday, so they held the reception/party at Aviators. It was pretty nuts. My fine idea was to have Harley drags down the runway at about 10:00 pm. Four abreast, idling on "the 4", we took off. I blistered everybody's ass bad on The RedBone Express, but alas, Gene Paul was not impressed. He chased us down in his truck and hollered at us. It was a hoot!

Which method produces more speed for the swoop??

Not sure why you would do a harness turn with no riser input at all. There are people that do this, but I have found that you severly limit your ability to make turn corrections using "just the harness." Also, the current, most widely used turn at meets this year (where all entry gates for Pros are five feet tall) is a 270 from about 700 feet (assuming crossbrace here). The great majority of people were throwing harness/one riser combination turns with both hands on the front dive loops, then transitioning to rears once they had their accuracy assured. That combination gets you fast AND far. A snap 180 to double fronts will create just as much speed, but for a shorter time. Generally speaking, as you come around the corner you will be hauling ass using both. The difference is that the corner can be much sharper in a snap turn. The snap induces more of a pendulum and it's that pendulum which creates the incredible speed you feel as you come around the corner (hopefully) and are swinging under your parachute. The problem is, after you have swung forward of your main, you scrub off speed (thus, lose distance) at a faster rate than the person who has his main straight over his head. Great examples of people to watch to see the difference are the GK RW teams here at Raeford. About half the guys on the 8-way team snap their turns and the other half carve from quite a bit higher, then transition to rears. The ones ones who snap "appear" to be faster initially, then the other guys blow right past them, going over 100 feet farther every single time. I watch this over and over, 12 times per day. It further solidifies my, and every other person on tour's opinion that "we must be doing it right." Heath Richardson (the hands-down speed king) does the exact same turn, whether it's a speed round or a distance round. The only difference is the size of the main and the amount of weight he has on. Hey, I like to snap a turn every once in a while, but I know I am going to sacrifice distance when I do it. Landing in a tighter area is one instance when a snap to double fronts might be applicable. Still, the added safety concerns make it much more critical that you are on your game. Chuck -

Beaters I have owned: -1974 Ford Pinto. Dark Green Metallic paint which was the only perfect thing on the car other than the mandatory Cragar SS wheels that we all owned back then. This car blew so much smoke out of the tailpipe you would have thought it was a smoke generator off an M-1 tank. The drivers seat slide latch did not work, so I held the seat full forward with a bent up clothes hanger. That ALWAYS broke at the most inopportune times, like when I was stipped at a light on a steep hill with the clutch pushed in. It had those HUGE chrome bumpers that became mandatory that year for the 5mph crashworthiness. I paid $500 for that car and gave it to one of my sisters when I went in the army. -"Blackie", my current 1987 Ford F-150 four wheel drive truck. Flact Black, straight six, granny low four speed. Sounds like a pulpwood truck because my friends like that it backfires, so the do it on purpose and regularly blow out my muffler. Front end well out of line and camber. Dry rotted 31 inch tires that go "wa wa wa" and a windshield so cracked it's hard to see out of. Another five hundred dollar sled that I could never sell. It's my general purpose dropzone and bashing vehicle.
