As it turns out, I saw that on Square One's website, and not PD's. From PD's website... The Performance Designs' Slink© is available in two configurations: - One for main canopies (SM-1) - One for Performance Designs' reserves PR-106 - PR-281 (SR-1) "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."
-
Probably because they're longer than the sport main slinks! I had SM1's (sport main slinks) on a Dacron lined Silhouette on type 17 risers, and it was a huge pain in the rear to get those guys on there, due to the length of the slinks. I put SR1's (the reserve/tandem slinks) on my current rig, which has Type 8 risers in addition to the Dacron lines (Sabre 2), and it made the process of installing them much easier, because they're longer than the SM1's... I bought them from PD at the same time I had the canopy relined, and told them specifically that I was putting them on the main, and they didn't say anything negative regarding it. What to do if you can't get back in formation?
bwilling replied to pirana's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The other thing you have to consider if you're going to leave that early and track that long is the proximity to other jumpers on the load that went before/after your group. If you haul ass at 7 grand and track hard down the flight line, your group may not be the only ones you have to worry about! You might want to track perpendicular to the line of flight! I prefer number one, that they stay off to the side and keep working, and that's what the LO's at our DZ normally preach to us... --> Dacron lined Spectre 190 in Infinity I-45: WILL IT FIT?
bwilling replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
Sabre 2 210, which packs up quite a bit bigger than your Spectre 190. He was probably cussing it the whole time though. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." -
Skydive Dallas under new management
bwilling replied to floormonkey's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've heard rumors and speculation, but they're just that at this point, rumors and speculation, so I'll decline to comment on the reasons. I will tell you that regardless of the reason for the change, I haven't yet talked to a single person that doesn't view this as a very positive change for Skydive Dallas! All hail King Johnny! BTW, he's not banning RW, but he does secretly have plans to turn the entire main landing area into a giant swoop pond. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." -
That's not entirely true... you can buy a 'business class', machine with the whatever version of Vista it is that's the equivalent to XP Pro, and the license is down gradable to allow running XP Pro. I still buy my machines for work pre-configured with XP Pro. They're OEM licensed for Vista, so Microsoft can tell the world they sold another Vista license, but they're sold with, and running XP, legally. Do you believe in the existence of American craft beer/ microbrews?
bwilling replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
I think that's the OP's complaint, that to advertise domestic beers for $2 then not sell them for $2 IS fraud. And he's got a point! Sam Adams IS a domestic beer, just a much as any of the BMC beers. If they advertise 'domestic beers', they should deliver domestic beers. ALL domestic beers... Otherwise they should just advertise Bud/Miller/Coors! Do you believe in the existence of American craft beer/ microbrews?
bwilling replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
Sorry, it's America. The macro breweries spend millions and millions of dollars convincing the American public that their products are beer. When was the last time you saw a commercial for Sierra Nevada? True story... I went to a restaurant that used to brew their own beer, pretty good beer at that. Not only had they torn the brewery down, they'd gone clueless. I asked the waiter what they had on tap, and one of the beers he rattled off was 'Sierra Nevada'. I kindly informed him that Sierra Nevada was brewer that had many styles of beer, and asked which one they had on tap. No Clue. We just don't live in a nation of beer drinkers. Actually, he hates Racers and Wings, but he is a very experienced and very good rigger! He's also very opinionated! John's one of those guys that comes to the DZ to jump and have fun, but still helps everyone out with rigging questions whenever he's on the DZ. I guess it's just a byproduct of his being a genuinely good guy, coupled with the fact that everybody knows him. He is famous, you know! They are indeed types of material, but you don't just randomly choose one, as they're used in conjunction with the fit to control fall rate. I highly suggest you get with someone knowledgeable to both measure you, and help you determine which material best suits your build and body type. A,B,C,D yokes on Jav - how long actually are?
bwilling replied to alexey's topic in Gear and Rigging
From Sunpath's website... This is basic sizing information. If you would like to provide us or your dealer with your height, weight, inseam, thigh, waist, and chest measurements, we can provide more accurate sizing information. This is just a guide. A-14 fits up to 5'3" B-15 fits 5'4" to 5' 6" C-16 fits 5'7" to 5'8" C-17 fits 5'9" to 5'11" C-18 fits 6' to 6'2" C-19 fits 6'2" to 6'3" C-20 fits 6'3" + "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." -
Dude, that's nuts! Ebay is chock full of scammers! Putting it on Ebay does nothing to legitimize the transaction, in fact, for me, it makes it more suspect. Legitimate skydivers selling gear will normally prefer the larger audience and fee free structure of dropzone.com, and most people selling large dollar items will have no problem using a trusted third party to conduct the transaction through. It's not a huge hassle for either the buyer or seller, and it's the best way to keep both parties safe from potential ripoffs when they don't know each other. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

Don't hide from it, embrace it! It's an opportunity! Your chance to really shine, to take the bull by the horns, and lead your team to victory! It's not about the silly games, it's about the effort, and as long as you keep that in mind and put forth some effort, you'll come out of the exercise looking like you give a crap to your employers. And it's always better to look like you give a crap, even if you don't. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

Sabre 2, Pilot, and Safire 2 are all the same class canopy, just made by different manufacturers. They're all lightly shaped planforms (elliptical if you must), and are considered to be good novice to intermediate canopies at appropriate wing loadings. They're sized a bit different, but not enough to make any significant difference... the Sabre 2 is 170sf, the Pilot is 168sf, and the Safire 2 is 169sf. The Samurai is a more aggressive design, and would be considered an 'expert' class canopy. That manufacturer (Big Air Sportz) also has an intermediate class canopy called the Lotus that would be a better fit for you, as it compares more favorably with the above three. The main difference with BAS canopies is that they're all air locked designs, a feature that some people swear by. By all means, jump the Sabre 2 170 you have available if your instructors are okay with you doing so. It will feel much more responsive (and faster!) than the Manta 185 you've been jumping as the manta is a purely rectangular design. It will also likely have more flare power than the Manta, because the Sabre 2 lands great. I've demo all three of the above canopies, and while they all land good, I thought the Sabre 2 was the best of that lot in terms of flare power. Have fun and be safe! "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

There's nothing inevitable regarding downsizing! A Sabre II or Pilot at an almost 1:1 wing loading may be all you ever want from a canopy, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! Downsize only if and when you're ready and you want to, not just because the 'majority' does it. I do have a point about the whole 'we've never seen you land thing... although Terry did give you some great advice despite having never seen you land. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."
-
Why, so you can get some more contradicting advice from experienced skydivers over the internet? Sorry, couldn't resist! Asking a bunch of people that have never seen you land a parachute what size parachute you should buy is at best only going to confuse you more. If you're a conservative person by nature, take the more conservative advice. If you're more aggressive by nature, take the more aggressive advice. But take the advice of your trusted instructors/mentors, not the advice of people who've never seen you fly a parachute. I can tell you that if you choose the conservative approach and purchase something like a Sabre II 170 or Pilot 168, you'll be getting a great canopy in one of the most popular sizes made, and will have no trouble selling it, if and when you do decide to downsize later. If you choose an appropriately size container system, you should be able to put either a 170 or a 150 main in it, as they generally will accommodate a (limited) range of sizes. Groundhog Day... But every time I see it, I get this deja vu feeling, like I've seen it before. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

How long to 100,250,1000 jumps?
bwilling replied to potatoman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Holy shit DSE! We've got a guy at our DZ like you, he just hit 900 in a little over 2 years in the sport I think. He goes by the nickname 'jumpsalot', but I tease him that if you say that fast, it sounds just like 'jumpslut'. If I time things just right, I can make my 1000th on the 30th anniversary of my 1st. Both my girlfriend and I have gotten great customer service from Altico, give Mike a ring and ask him what delivery time will be! He's one of the nicest, most helpful people you will ever have the pleasure of doing business with! "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

I emailed her recently, and she told me they had shifted the responsibilities if the demo program to their traveling road show folks. I'm sure she could put him in touch with the right people, but since I have that info, here it is... Les Stachyra Aerodyne US Demo tour 860933766 mambapilot@gmail.com I just noticed the phone number is a digit short, but that's what Les has listed in his emails. He has been good about getting back to me pretty quickly via email... "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

I'd also recommend at least looking into Dacron lines, if you're really wanting to save your back. Nothing takes the edge off those snappy openings like a little give in the lines! My Dacron lined Spectre opens like butter. "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."

I can give you a couple of comps... I bought a 1999 Silhouette 230 with way less jumps (probably in the neighborhood of half that number) with a nearly new dacron line set for $800 about a year and a half ago. At the same time I purchased that one, there was a newer one listed, with about a hundred jumps on it I think. I emailed the guy regarding it and made him an offer, but he ended up selling for his full asking price of $1000. As Dave said though, it's worth whatever someone will pay him for it! That's never been one of PD's best selling canopies, but I can't for the life of me figure out why not, because it's a great parachute overall!
