I've heard of people bringing hair dye for those emergency situations. Pink in fact. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

I have packed for a very long time. The thing that really bothers me is that newly licensed skydivers get frustrated with packing and would rather have someone else do it so they can get back on the plane. This is dangerous for many reasons but especially for the reasons metioned by the OP. How many new jumpers that pay for packers would know 50% of what was mentioned was questionable? I am not a dedicated packer but will pack for two or three upjumpers and myself during the day. I try to avoid packing for newer jumpers because I feel its important for them to learn about their parachute, their gear, and how things work. I'll take time to help them learn if they ask me to pack. I personally would love a mandate that said you had to pack for yourself while holding only an "A" license. The packing requirements to get an A license are pretty weak. I'm borderline OCD with me packing my own shit...so keep that in mind when reading above Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

For me, it wasn't a reluctance to use it. My rig simply would not fit in a bag I felt would be small enough to carry on. The rig by itself was. Gear bag gets checked, no biggie. I have never been stopped with it (i'm sure its only a matter of time). However, I will be looking into the BASE bags shortly to use as a carry on bag. I agree its better to keep it out of site. I have in the past just carried my rig into the airport and used my gear bag as a gear bag/suitcase. Other times i've actually checked in both a gear bag and a suitcase. In each instance, probably 3 or 4 times the rig is over my shoulder at the ticket counter already. Have never been stopped, asked questions, or even given the slightest bit of delay at the ticket counter or going through X-ray. I see your point. The main reason for carrying the rig out of my gear bag is that the gear bag won't get through as carry on. I think that was the point someone else was trying to make. The gear bag is just too big. I have a real fear of letting my rig out of my site when traveling with it. So checking it in would not be an option for me, unless it became the ONLY option. Edited to add: The best option is for me to get a smaller gear bag for just my rig when I travel so that I can keep it in a bag and out of site. I have traveled several times with my rig. I usually don't even put it inside a bag, just carry it over my shoulder. It has never given me a problem. In fact, one of the TSA guys started talking to me about being a rigger in the Air Force. I think it worries the flight attendants more than anyone. You should of seen this one gals face asking me..."what is THAT for?" Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

why do I have to do that? I have a small monkey in my rig that pulls for me. He came with the pet name cypres. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

Swoop Chords-Lesson Learned The Easy Way
jacketsdb23 replied to jacketsdb23's topic in Safety and Training
This past Saturday I received my new RW suit. The suit came with swoop chords that I've never used before. I was participating in 4-way scrambles so I decided not to use them. Most of the day I had the swoop chords simply tucked up my arm sleeve. They were kept in place by the spandex material. To make a longs story short, last jump of the day we did a formation load 16-way. I went to track, I waived off and noticed about 4-6" of swoop chord hanging out along with the thumb loop on my deploying arm. I grabbed the swoop chord and wadded it up in my hand and deployed. I can imagine that had the pilot chute gone through the swoop chord or the bridle been wrapped up in the chord that my day would have been more exciting than necessary. I have the ability to take my swoop chords out if I'm not using them as they are on a belt system. From now on this is what I plan to do. Thought this might be a good place to place my experience so that others who may have not thought of this will. If you aren't using swoop chords that come with your suit make sure you have a secure way of keeping them from coming out in free fall. Thanks. We would love to bring the wine up for you Beth. In fact...just to make sure its safe, we'll keep it up in the front of the truck with us. There will be four of us to look after it to make sure that the bottles don't break. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

Skydive Arizona Landing Policy
jacketsdb23 replied to bbarnhouse's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I understand your point. I think everyone is satisfied with the idea of having a strictly HP landing area. Lets as a community bring ideas to our home DZ's this weekend and see when/how/why this can or can't be instituted as a START. This will take commitments from individual fun jumpers, DZO's, S&TA's, and instructors. Then we can all swoop or not, while still jumping at altitude. What helps us at Byron is there is a very easily identified No Fly Marker. The only reason that No Fly Zone is violated (and it has) is people have not fully understood the new changes. I think that everyone is getting better at understanding the new patterns. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
Skydive Arizona Landing Policy
jacketsdb23 replied to bbarnhouse's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't swoop, yet, so I'm just trying to think out loud here. I think the idea is that with a 180 you will be able to see more of the traffic in your area and NOT perform the big turn. I think we've all agreed that turns in traffic are not a good idea. The 180 perhaps gives you a better view to make the call about whether conditions permit a HP landing. A 180 and a 270 are equally dangerous in traffic. The 180 approach helps you make that call. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

We did have some good discussions. I didn't realize it meant co-hosting. I'll have to dip into my extensive red nighty collection. I only have 119 more sleeps to figure it out. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
I did the S/L progression training at Malone Parachute Club, Dick Swanson's Operation. I was taught canopy control from the start. When I got back into the sport last year, I carried those things I learned when I bought my new Silhouette and then my Safire 2 at 98 jumps. When I did Johnathan Tagles course in Elsinore, I was down right shocked that some of the folks had NEVER done the things we did in the course. The stalling of canopies, braked turns, etc. I thought everyone was taught to open high and practice this stuff until I took the course. It was a good refresher for me, but mostly I had already done all of it on my own Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

OSOK, I'm not sure why you show right hand and left hand patterns crossing, thats probably not a good idea. I like the idea of having the HP turns outside of the "box" for landing but I don't think the problem is alleviated. This may lead to an 'aggressive' 90º turn by a traditional flyer landing on top of a swooper who is surfing 5' off the ground. Closing speeds for swoopers are very very fast when coming out of their turns. I have attached a picture that incorporates OSOK's idea of turning 'outside' the main landing area and pchapman's idea of keeping everyone in the same left or right hand pattern. I realize that not all DZ's have the set-up to accommodate such patterns. I'm putting this up strictly for discussion. The one thing I thought when I saw pchapman setup is that if a swooper needed an out it brought you right under the "traditional patterns" base or final. That may be one reason for the right vs. left hand patterns for swoopers vs. non swoopers as Byron is doing.
