  1. I just posted a very similar problem I had this weekend. My camera will freeze and the only way to fix it is to take the battery out. I can't jump it until if I figure this out. It also won't turn on sometimes. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  2. I know this camera is used widely in skydiving so I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue. On Saturday when I turned my camera on (fully charged battery) the camera wouldn't turn on and my CF light did not register a card. I finally was able to get it to turn on (took battery out for about 20 seconds). It did this several times over the course of Saturday. On Sunday I got the same issue, except at one point it actually froze and was still "On" when I turned my camera off. This happened in the plane. I thought I fixed it but in freefall it stopped taking photos right after the exit shots. I can no longer rely on the camera until i figure this thing out. I'm not even sure where to start. First thing I'm going to do is check the firmware and make sure I have the latest. I'm asking here to just get a jump start on what to check and obviously I'll contact Canon. I bought the camera second hand from a buddy who used it very sparingly. I have jumped this camera for over a month with no problems. The only thing that has changed recently was I bought 2 512 CF cards. Thanks in advance for any insight or help. 3. Hopefully your reserve doesn't look like this.... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3177419;search_string=rigger%20story;#3177419 Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  4. Yeah, that one gets high marks in my book too. The Yankees remain the only team in baseball to have choked hard enough to lose a 7 game series after leading 3-0.
  5. As far as games go...this one takes the cake for me. I was not rooting for either team...but the end of that game was ridiculous. I was living in SF at the time and you could hear people screaming up and down the block. It was crazy. Oh...and there is always Aaron Boones homerun in 2003. Probably not the most amazing home run in baseball history...but just the moment, the friends, the atmosphere I was in at the time makes that moment pretty unreal. 6. Robin Williams' little stand up segment on this event is hillarious: "Unlike that Canadian snowboarder back in 1998, they took away his medal because he tested positive for marijuana, and that's a little redundant number one, Number two, they said that marijuana was a performance enhancing drug. EH! The only way marijuana is a performance enhancing drug is if there's a big fucking chocolate bar at the end of the run. Poor Canadian snowboarder, they asked for his medal back and he couldn't find it. It was around his fucking neck!" - Robin Williams Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  7. If skittles went in battling a spinning malfunciton without a functioning altimeter everyone would be wondering why he jumped without an altimeter. I don't care how many jumps you have...when shit hits the fan an altimeter is a neccessity. Anyone suggesting he is stupid to jump without one at 100 jumps needs to take a step back and rethink that. He had a choice and made the right call. Bravo! Good job on stopping the chain of events in its tracks. And shame on the 'experienced' jumpers who are calling this guy out. 8. Just to bust your balls...well because I'm working this weekend and I can't jump and I feel like busting your balls...how do you have 3 rides in 120 jumps? gear maintenance? packing? For a direct answer to your question...I was hoping that I wouldn't have any mals ever. Then I fucked up my pack job on the same day I got a new parachute. I got careless and only stowed one brake on my crossfire2. Second jump on it, very fast spinner, and got rid of it. Now I hope I never have another one. ever. 10. I'm baffled...what is it about an RSL that you don't like? I'm all for the choose what you want to jump with and do it. Just curious as to why the AAD wins your confidence and the RSL doesn't? If the guy in GA had an RSL he might be here talking about his cutaway. I'd sure rather be kicking out of a couple line twist on my reserve than not being able to get a reserve out. There have been two incidents in the last month where an RSL most likely would have resulted in nothing more than a cutaway and low reserve opening. One guy had close to 6000 jumps. Another had almost 300 jumps. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum that encompass 99% of us skydivers out there. We surely fit somewhere in between the experience levels of these guys. None of us are as good as we think we are. And it only takes one incident to realize that. Especially when we hit the ground trying to find our reserve handle that has been hidden behind our back because we loosened our chest strap to get an extra two feet of swoop. 11. I now jump my crossfire2 loaded @ 1.55 with my camera setup with the RSL connected. My first ~50 jumps with camera I had the RSL disconnected. After a discussion with myself and others at the DZ this past weekend, I have chosen to jump with the RSL connected. It is worth looking at if you choose to jump with the RSL disconnected. 13. Bill I have a problem with this. What is defined as completely clear? The problem with some of these canopy collisions is that the person *thinks* the pattern is clear because they simply don't see the other canopy. Only separated landing areas helps when pilots "miss" spotting each other. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  14. Andy, We do all of what you mention. We talk about landing direction before getting on the plane. The first man down follows that pattern and everyone else follows suit. Most of the time it works out just fine. However, the wind frequently changes direction in the afternoon. If that change happens to be while we are in the air, the first man down changes the pattern and this is usually followed. I think each dropzone does have their own rules that work for them. What we need is everyone to separate fast high performance landings from slower standard pattern landings and ENFORCE with groundings their own pattern rules, whatever those may be that work for them. Then we start educating about canopy flight and patterns from day 1. For what its worth, right or wrong, I think there are many DZ's that have a FMD rule. Many of the ones I jump out here in CA do. Many of those places also discuss the pattern prior to getting in the plane. I would love to have a landing direction discussed, picked, and then shown with a stationary indicator that everyone followed regardless of the wind direction. GA at our dropzone have two runways. They don't get to land into the wind on every approach, I personally don't see how its much different for us. If people learned to land their canopies crosswind there would not be such a panic to land into the wind. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  15. I think every single person that is on this forum needs to read this thread. I think we really have a baseline to start from with this thread. This is not an uncommon thought process from new jumpers. so sad. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  16. So, that is about 100% of the time...... If I am in the designated playground, I'm gunna spiral until my eyes pop out of my head. Come time to enter the pattern, thats when I'll straighten out and fly predictably. It's everyones own responsibility to watch for other canopies. You being under a highly loaded canopy are the one who is going to be cutting through traffic, with a higher decent rate. Why is it that the square footage should designate your allowed decent speed? Fuck that. If I am on top and coming down on you, I will watch out. If you are on top coming down on me (the more likely scenario) then you had better watch out for me. If you want to assure that you wont be bombarded by 300sq ft canopies from above, how bout upping the wing loading a few more points, and pulling at say, 1500ft? When you come to my dropzone please introduce yourself. I will then know to stay off of the airplane when you are on it. We have one guy at our dropzone who continually did what you are talking about. It took a near collision of him (loaded 1.4) with another guy (loaded 2.2+) during landing for him to "wake up". You prepare for landing immediately when you open. Stack the canopies up...know who is faster than you and know who is slower. Ask questions to those you don't know on a load before getting in the airplane. Example, i've been doing video's lately. Everyone who does video's with me has a higher wingloading and I know this. Even if I'm the first one out in the tandem groups, I will pull slightly higher and sit in brakes until I see the zoomy dudes below me. Then I have he whole landing area to myself. STOP FUCKING SPIRALING ANYWHERE AFTER YOU OPEN. you guys have no business landing with people with 2.0 + wingloadings. Out first, second or otherwise. I mean these guys have 30 - 40 second canopy rides. Be smart. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  17. There are enough issues with "home" dropzones. Now add people from all over the country/world....with different rules at different dropzones...and bring them together for a boogie!!!! YAY! I haven't looked at the stats...but are canopy collisions heavily biased to occur at boogies? I have significantly reduced my participation in jumping at boogies over the last year specifically because of landing pattern issues. Its not worth it to me. 18. Me three. Sign me up. This means people better be real comfortable landing downwind and crosswind at times. Not as the norm- but on the occasion it happens to be comfortable with it. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  19. Well we need to start changing that as well. Because that is a big problem. Downwind landings on purpose on a load mixed with experience should not be tolerated. If you have your own dedicated pass, do whatever you want. But with 14+ canopies in the air, have some common sense (not directed at you rehmwa) Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  20. I think every method has shortcomings. If we talk about a landing pattern before getting in the plane 90% of the time its adhered to. But what if the winds change? Now - MOST of the time, the first person down is an experienced jumper who lands sees this change and lands accordingly. Now do people land in the direction set or the one talked about on the plane? What if the experienced jumper misses the wind change and lands as planned...and then people start chasing the windsock? I don't know the answer. But I think the first person down ought to be smart enough to set the best pattern possible. I'd rather have 14 people landing in the same wrong direction then 14 different patterns set. This is why I feel its important to know how to land your canopy crosswind and downwind. If people can't do that, they need to get a new canopy. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  21. I bring it up because some people are afraid to do it. I digress, the FJC may not be the place for it. When they are jumping solo without instructors students should become comfortable with the idea that crosswind landings are ok and be able to perform them. Maybe on a canopy proficiency card, or as an addition to the A license proficiency card. Crosswind landings quite frankly are unavoidable and should be taught and practiced in a controlled manner if at all possible. How many times have we heard someone explain why they landed the way they did? "well the windsock was showing this direction...blah blah blah". The windsock becomes pointless if there is another canopy in the air with you. If you aren't the first one down you follow the pattern set. If that happens to be crosswind, you better be comfortable doing it or land in a different area. This concept needs to be taught very early. 22. I agree boogies are a whole different animal. I haven't been to one since Lost Prairie last year. And I saw a lot of scary things there. Mixing high performance canopies with slower canopies, HP landings with traditional landings, and unfamiliar people and landing areas is just asking for trouble no matter how many rules are in place. Everyone must realize if they allow HP landings and traditional landings in the same area, especially during boogies they are just asking for trouble. It doesn't help when licensed jumpers who are in the pattern take themselves out of the pattern by chasing the flag. If a pattern has been developed, the wind sock no longer matters unless you decided to land far away from everyone. I just think its important that we put an emphasis on pattern behavior as a priority - leaving wind direction as a secondary emphasis. 24. very fair point. Maybe the more experienced jumpers need to take some responsibility in educating the newly licensed A jumpers. Its seems though that something more formal may be in order so that when jumpers move from DZ to DZ - especially at low jump numbers they have a solid core of understanding canopy patterns and fitting into traffic beyond what was taught in the FJC. Examples need to be set at each DZ and have 0 tolerance for gross landing pattern infractions. Sadly landing patterns just don't seem to be understood or people don't care and I can't figure out why. Even if 90% of jumpers get it, it only takes one jumper to cause an accident. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  25. I'll miss you guys this year. Sadly I will not be joining camp Byranada this year either. Thanks to Mad John I was able to enjoy some Lang this week. I'll be thinking of you all. Hopefully next year! Shell....I will still be looking forward to the third edition to my Canada hat selection. Hopefully its not dependent on LP participation I have a new address when you've got the hat selected Please Please Please Please stay safe everyone. Look out for one another.
