No kidding even back in 2009 people were making stupid fucking decisions that resulted in the death of children and adults! http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=7986040&page=1 "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Again, what do you think my argument is? I am just keeping with the news article theme of the day. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

John the relevant question is whether the criminal supposed to call the background check hotline first before he busts the window? This is legislation on background checks, not home security. And yes you can make it more difficult for someone to steal from you, but that is irrelevant to background checks. Perfect example that dedicated criminals will get what they want: http://www.wthr.com/story/16209584/men-use-stolen-suv-to-smash-into-gun-store Maybe we needed a ban on high capacity vehicles in that instance??? Wow great!! Universal background checks, on legal gun purchases, by legal owners! That will totally foil the criminals. who don't purchase guns legally, can't legally own guns, and won't obtain guns in a way that will be under the purview of any new or existing background check. I am guessing there will be a number you call before you make a straw purchase for your felon relative, or file the serial number off your handgun. Will their be a hotline to get an approval number before breaking an entering? The criminals are totally going to want a quick turnaround time... smash and grab means smash and grab. Unusual Incident: Blinded by Condensation
DougH replied to AviationTD's topic in Safety and Training
You can yank a helmet off with your toggles in your hands. No ideal, but much better than taking your hands out of your toggles down low, and better than flying blind in the pattern. It sounds like you made the best of the circumstances and you didn't panic. That is a key takeaway for me. As you jump more you build your well of experience and your jumpers tool box. BUT... and this is a big but, you need to keep calm and avoid panic to use that extra experience and skillset. You were short on the skillset because of your jump numbers, but you responded in the best way you could. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Bad ass! http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=Qm7mKglOKL8&feature=fvwp I do have some trees I want to take down on the property. Maybe some tree climbing gear will be a decent investment. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Foul play at Pacific City Beach Boogie 2012??? U decide...
DougH replied to superjim's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No one was trying to trick you. You probably all had a momentary lapse of intelligence on the spot, exit order, etc. The difference is that your friends recovered from their dose of stupidity long before you did! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Foul play at Pacific City Beach Boogie 2012??? U decide...
DougH replied to superjim's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is by far one of the dumbest things I have ever seen on this website, and there has been a lot of stupid shit on here. You got a bad spot, and neither you nor your friends were smart enough to look out the plane and figure it out! The tandem leaves and you then dick with your friends GoPro for what appears to be a ridiculous amount of time. Perfect commentary for people just slapping GoPro's on their head without have the actual chops to be videographers. You leave under your own free will, because you don't have the common sense to spot for yourself. You don't have the situational awareness to realize that the spot was bad and you should pull high. And in spite of your stupidity the spot was good enough to make the beach, and you come up on here with half the beach in your vagina! This really is fucking stupid, I hope this is a delayed April fools joke? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
It was an big ass oak tree. So no branches for the first 50 or so feet. Would have also been easy to climb with proper arborist gear (spikes and climbing belt), but that couldn't be purchased quickly with a trip to Tractor Supply, and Walmart! I had a chop this weekend and the canopy ended up about 60 feet in a tree that I wasn't excited to climb. I ended up getting it out of the tree with the help of two of my friends in about an hour, without lifting a foot off the ground. Was so easy, and fun, that I wanted to share! We used a 10 dollar wrist slingshot (daisy brand, you'll shoot your eye out) to launch a lead sinker and some 50lb test nylon mono filament over the branches the canopy was stuck on. Next step was to lower down the sinker and the fishing line, and pull up some heavier nylon braided rope. Then we just pulled the decent sized branch right out of the tree. I can think of some areas to improve, but overall I am pretty thrilled. Areas for improvement: Launcher: The sling shot worked pretty well, and my friend was much better at it than I was. Part of the original issue is that the "ammo" was lead pyramid sinkers that had balance issues. I cut the sinker down to a square and then we were in business. Even better would be completely round lead sinkers. I guess a compound bow could work just as well, and have higher range if you needed to. Probably more chances of loosing arrows and lines in the trees. Starter Line: I think braided fishing line would be easier to work with. 50lb test was pretty difficult to work with as it wasn't supper supple and kept the coil off the spool and tangled some. I also had climbing rope, harnesses, and belay equipment. If we couldn't pull it down we could have used the same approach to get the climbing rope in to a safe fork in the tree to hoist me up. Come to think of it you could also hoist up one of those rope saws to take out a bigger limb that couldn't be broken from the tree by pulling. And now I don't have a 1k+ worth of nylon hanging in a tree! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

School me on memory cards... Sony Memory Stick, Versus SD/SDHC/SDHX
DougH replied to DougH's topic in Photography and Video
I need to get some memory cards for my CX760. The internal memory may be a godsend if I run to the plane without a memory card, but the transfer speed from the internal memory with USB2.0 is brutally slow so I only want to use it in a oh shit back up moment. Looking at my camera manual shows that the camera can take the following memory: Memory Stick PRO-Duo (Mark2), up to 32gb Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, up to 32gb SD Memory Card, Class 4 or Faster, Up to 64gb SDHC Memory Card, Class 4 or Faster, Up to 64gb SDXC Memory Card, Class 4 or Faster, Up to 64gb Intuitively I would think that the SD options are better since the offer a large capacity card, and it is proprietary like the Sony memory sticks. Are there benefits to the Sony memory sticks that justify using them over the SD cards? It appears the SD/HC/XC are the same format with varying capacities, with XC being the largest capacity, approaching TB's. That doesn't seem relevant here since the camera is verified operational in the manual up to 64 GB's. Are there any other operation differences between a SD, SDHC, and SDXC card besides size? Is there a brand that is the preferred media choice, like Sony is for freefall cameras? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -

Canon EOS SL1 (smallest dslr) and T5i Released
DougH replied to trunk's topic in Photography and Video
That might be just what I need to balance out the size issue I am having with my CX760! This is unrelated, but have we discussed the EOS M that they are comparing it to size wise on some of their distribution materials? I think that was the mirror less model that took the same lenses as the Rebel series? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Deeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr you reeeed gooooood. "director of the Colorado Department of Corrections" I am sure his job had nothing to do with him being a target for a targeted killing. He didn't take any public stances on the new Colorado gun laws from what I can tell. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

http://www.npr.org/2013/03/19/174639343/veterans-face-red-tape-accessing-disability-other-benefits Our Federal VA can't even figure out how to process disability claims for our nation's heroes. What an absolute bipartisan disgrace. I am sure a gun registry run by the Federal government would work much better. Fucking disgrace. Detroit EFM seems to have trouble with his own finances
DougH replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Sounds like MD wanted unemployment insurance on home workers that were either, undocumented, or improperly compensated as contractors and the state disagreed with that. It sounds like he is on the same moral footing as 95% of the drop zones in the skydiving industry! What I want to know is how much he is paying Consuela the nanny, that he managed to get an assessment for 15k worth of unpaid state unemployment insurance. I don't think it is a bad idea. I think right now people get educated on this in a reactive way. I remember asking some one as a new jumper if you could you catch you free bag. I think the context was that they lost some gear in the woods after a chop. But if you don't ask, or you ask the wrong person, there could be a wide gap in this knowledge. This seems to pop up every time I visit from an outside URL? It isn't a pop up in a different window, but a video that overlays on which ever DZ.com screen I open to. Is this an ad? Or is this some crap that is on my computer. If it is an ad, fine, have to pay for the freeloaders like me! Just was hoping to find out that it wasn't that my computer is jacked up! Doesn't a written warning put the DZO on record that they were complicit in letting a known safety risk continue to jump at the risk of others? Maybe I am just weasel adverse, but I don't want anything that can be subpoenaed during discovery. "It says here that you identified x number of saftey problems with Joe Blow Hooks through the Pattern, can you explain why 2 months later you allowed this jumper to board your aircraft for the jump when he crashed in to and killed my clients deceased son". I don't know why a written warning is needed? You have the keys to the sky at your little slice of airspace. Explain to them exactly the expectations, and then don't let them jump from your planes if you don't think they are demonstrating that they understand, or care to understand, what you expect of them.
