  1. I actually buy the best of the DVDs available, TY is the best running, but costs about a dime more. I buy in bulk from Meritline or MediaRight. On occasion I'll use the cheapos from Walmart or Target, when I'm in a jam. Occasionally those do fail. Yes, rendering sucks. No doubt. ISO *should* be able to use the same name, but Nero and Windows cache info that doesn't always allow this to work. Dunno why, haven't dug into it. Adobe Premiere has a similar issue when rendering AC3 files to the same file name sometimes. Sony Vegas does the same with MPEG4 files...
  2. that's the same sort of angle I often take, flying in a knees-down position. Back to the latest twist of the thread, I'd gotten an email from someone suggesting that I contact the USPA BOD if I have objections to the waiver being granted for a 16 y/o becoming a coach. Given this particular thread, I think it's a reasonable suggestion. I'm still a little surprised that the thread took the direction of: "Don't backfly directly under tandems, please?" "My DZO says it's cool." "I'm a TM. Don't backfly directly under tandems" "Screw you cyber @#E$!" "Don't backfly directly under tandems, it's not safe, a premature opening from the vidiot could kill everyone." "Then I won't have a premature opening. I know I can prevent them." "Really?" "OK, you guys got your way, Tom Noonan from Strong called my DZO and now I won't be backflying under tandems. My DZO says it's safe to do, but Strong doesn't want me doing it." Does this discussion merit a waiver to allow a 16 year old to become a USPA coach?
  3. First, contrary to popular belief, burning slower is more likely to cause errors than burning at higher speeds. Data is buffered differently. Second, if you created an image file and then altered the image file, you must rebuild a new image file and it's generally best to build the image file with a new name, don't use the old one. Just because you've successfully used one brand of DVD for 100's of DVDs doesn't mean much. Memore x for instance, buys their bulk from a very low end manufacturer. They don't make their own. What you may have been using in the past likely isn't what you're using today or next week. I'd guess you've got a problem with your current image file. Can you burn a clean DVD as a Roxio project vs image file?
  4. Or go to the hardware store and buy a sponge and stuff it in the box. It will form to the size of the camera and fill up the space in the box. I was told only women were supposed to whistle in freefall.... ltdiver Sorry lt, I gotta dispute that. Older gay people have the same problem. Never thought about using a sponge, good tip!
  5. I dont' agree the sport would be fucked either, but in the same breath, every post relates to how "it used to be." Yeah well...it "used to be" that class 5 kayaking was for extremists, so was downhill mountain biking. Used to be that paragliding, hanggliding, windsurfing, kiteboarding, custom-chopper building, trips to the Amazon, Everest climbs, freeclimbing, BASE jumping, motoX and similar activities were for the fringes of society (as was skydiving). Today, most of these activities are mainstream, and all competing for the same personality, same dollar, and same time slot. IMO, until the USPA and manufacturers pull their heads out of their backsides and start to actually market the sport to compete with climbing and other sports, that's where this sport is truly going to remain challenged. My group shoots sports for two cable providers, and one thing we've noticed being on the inside of the sport is how much money the industry spends on ads, advertorials, image placement, and other publicity to support their sport. Our sport isn't doing that. In fact, I've witnessed some resistance to taking this approach when I was at PIA and had discussions on this very topic.

    Red Dawn

I think this needs repeating... And an insurgent does not necessarily have anything to do with being a terrorist. Couldn't agree more. In the most loose terms, I could possibly be considered an insurgent, like many here. While I haven't revolted against the constituted government, I've publically spoken out against them. Terrorists are generally fundamentalists, radicals, and often cover their activities with a religious cloak. I'm more curious as to why the US (and other countries) aren't doing more to subvert and destroy Islam itself.
  7. Just curious if anyone has done a data run of how many: Tandems Static IAD students turn into skydivers. I'd imagine the answer is tandems by far, but curious. I don't understand why so many hate tandems. They help keep the cost of fun jumps down, help provide/fund turbine aircraft, and provide a constant revenue stream that other sources no longer provide.

I'll bite; ~they didn't attack to purport a social statement against the government of the region ~they didn't attack to perpetuate a religious statement against the predominant religion of the region ~they were fighting to maintain the culture they were raised within, on the land where they were raised ~Wolverines fought to protect their way of life, vs killing others for purposes of making them afraid for their lives ~they weren't fundamentalists acting upon the fringes of their society ~they were facing an occupying force in their own homeland ~they weren't the aggressors, but rather the victims. ~Wolverines had no ideals of going to heaven with virgins waiting them, but rather dying to protect what they believe in. They weren't attacking because God told them to, nor because they felt they even had divinity on their side. ~Wolverines were fighting to protect freedoms they'd been given as citizens of this country, not attempting to force their religion and accompanying government down the throats of the aggressors. Sure, there are parallels, but isn't that true of most any war? Terrorism itself has become a religion, IMO. Saw an article about a month ago comparing this film to what's happening in Iraq; it's stupid and missing the point to compare them, IMO (I know, you're just looking for a spirited debate). One thing I did appreciate about this bad film though; it dealt with rape, murder, execution, and other travesties of war in a very frank and honest manner. Strange, for a film that was aimed at the 25y/o male.
  9. hasn't been a problem for me. You'll hear noises/whistling, and it will have a slight pull, but that's no big deal. Perhaps gaff off the lens opening...
  10. That simply makes no sense. There are no USPA "rules and regs" on this subject. None. Recommendations, yes. Not rules. Per the SIM, section 6-8E/c: c. A USPA C license is recommended. d. The jumper should have made at least 50 recent jumps on the same parachute equipment to be used for camera flying,.... Section 6-8F: CONSIDERATIONS FOR FILMING STUDENTS 1. Refer to the USPA Instructional Rating Manual for guidelines on minimum experience and qualifications for flying camera for student training jumps. a. A skydiver should have extensive camera flying experience with experienced jumpers prior to photographing or videoing student jumps. A C license is recommended, but not required. Moreover, these are *recommendations* and not rules. Should the USPA consider a camera rating? Possibly. Benefits are far outweighed by the detriments at this time, IMO, but should it be considered? I don't see why not. If they were "rules" vs "recommendations," I'd feel differently. We don't need more "rules." Recently I listened to a guy with nearly 5k skydives whining off about how many camera flyers there are and how they all suck. He went on to cry about how they're taking money out of his pocket while they all suck. His opinion was that the USPA should require at least 500 jumps and a rating like AFF I to jump with tandems or students. Well...that recomendation already exists. The person he was whining to asked him "How many fun jumps have you made with other camera flyers to teach them how to suck less?" The response was "None. I don't want to teach anyone my techniques." Poor baby. Figure something else out, because new people are always coming up underneath you. It would be terrific if someone would write a USPA sponsored training program for camera flyers, and perhaps offer it as an add-on rating to other ratings after the C license. That would probably make some DZO's very happy. Perhaps it could be privatized, and a facility like SDU could offer a course/rating that is private but respected. Look at the lengthy thread in this forum about camera guys going out attached to a Tandem student harness. This forum talked about how dangerous and dumb that is. A few months later that same poster went into a thread on Safety and basically told everyone to f@!#%! off if they didn't like him backflying directly beneath tandems. He didn't understand the ramifications of a premature deployment and then went on to say "The lesson to be learned is to prevent premature deployments" (I'd say he missed the point), but a rating wouldn't have prevented him from being there, doing what he's doing. Nor would a "rule" have prevented it. What we need is self-policing and DZO's that aren't willing to allow 100 jump wonders to be filming tandems or other activities. Made me crazy to see a 100 jump wonder start jumping with tandems recently, and at the same time, hear the TM's whine about how slow he is to position, and how he can't match their fall rate. Back to point, USPA probably *should* consider beefing up the various levels of recommendations, and perhaps create an add-on rating, because as cameras become cheaper, lighter, and higher quality, more people are sticking them on their heads for whatever purpose. A training program or at least some information from a sanctioned agency might help get the word out.
  11. I did. Saw a UFO for real. http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_6131226
  12. USPA *does* offer recommendations for vidiots, or at least for persons shooting video in the air, and the tandem manufacturers have their own recommendations. I can't disagree however, that it's probably a good concept to have USPA offer a rating, or at least some semblance of discipline regarding jump#'s, experience, currency, etc. I've watched a guy that was allowed to start lurking tandems at jump 100 and begin shooting video at jump 120. He's very good, but knows nothing of photography, hasn't really grasped the potential dangers of what could happen, etc. Norm Kent attempted to address some of this in his new video, FWIW. Too many people are strapping cameras on too early, predominantly because "they can" rather than being qualified.
  13. the HC5 is a decent SD camera, no doubt. If that's how you shoot with it, the image is on par with anything else you'll find in a small sensor palmcorder class camcorder.
  14. It did happen. To me, two days ago. Bruised the hell outta my right heel, and I felt like a heel for having held in brakes too low to return to full flight. Was very grateful for PLF training, particularly on asphalt.
  15. I'd recommend an HC5, but don't shoot in DV/SD, shoot in HDV, but downconvert to DV on output. You'll have a MUCH better image. Of course, if you're just turning tapes over, this won't work if they don't have an HDV deck.
  16. Specifics might help. Burning tools? Brand(s) of media? Bitrate? content type?
  17. While this tangent of the thread is probably best for the photo forum; shoot exactly as you describe, but don't use a wide lens. This allows you to be back away from the student. Or work with the TM so that he's willing to look in your direction as you take a shot from a 90 degree angle, back to the sun, at a slightly tilted angle. I've got some of those shots on my laptop at the DZ, I'll post em' later this evening. [edited to add pix & While this isn't the money shot you're talking about, it's a great angle to work if you don't want to fly slightly below and in front of the tandem. If you're belly flying, I fly in a mantis position focused up at a distance of about 5-7 feet back. If you fly sit/tween position, you can angle below and shooting up without being beneath as well. I disagree with the concept of being in the student's face the entire skydive, that doesn't tell a story, it just says "Here is my face and I'm moving fast." It doesn't show the student relative to the ground, and doesn't show the student relative to anything else, either. All that said, I don't have the thousands of jumps you do, so I'll leave the subject by saying that I'm never beneath the tandem, and have never had to worry about the trapdoor, DZO is happy with what I do, and other vidiots seem to feel I'm shooting reasonably well, although there is a tremendous amount more I expect and intend to learn. This isn't a wide, shot from about 8 feet back. If I do jump a wide, it's usually a .6. This shot however, is just a straight HC7 with a UV filter on the lens. I shoot without image stabilization enabled, don't find any issue with shaky/unstable video. I have found certain kinds of wings can cause issues.
  18. Spirituality is different than a belief in God. yes, I ascribe to most of the beliefs of my parents and their parents etc. These beliefs are significantly different than the bullshit presented by people like Carlos Castenada, pop-religion frufru from Sedona, AZ, and the like. Old westerns generally present the post-white contact information that was essentially forced after the Treaty of 1868. That said, I'm not evangelizing nor asking anyone to believe what I believe, nor do I condescend to suggest that if you don't believe as I do, you're not a good person or going to hell. Therefore, my personal beliefs will likely never find their way to this community. Come see me if you want to experience it first hand. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the spiritual tenets of various nations in North America are as greatly varied as those of all other world religions. But you'd never know that by reading the books predominantly written by non-native, white christians about our cultures. Over 2000 languages spread over a large continent, with different game, hunting, farming, trading, and social strata, but most books lump all into one.
  19. Thanks for the kind words, Red. But it is true I use 10 words where 2 might do. Nope, HC series don't have fancy in-camera editing modes. Those are mostly a thing of the past, primarily because NLE's are now easily accessible, but also that these features use up memory allocation that is needed for other functions/DSP.
  20. Krishna & Rama are two of Vishnu's 10 mythical incarnations. What evidence do you have of any of them? Why should anyone believe in them and what can any of them do for your problem of sin and its penalty? Just as much evidence as you offer of your beliefs, except that a greater percentage of the world's population accept it (once you pull Catholics, Mormons, Anglicans out of the Christian mix as you've done in previous posts). If the popular vote means anything, you lose.
  21. The DZO was apparently cool with him backflying underneath tandems, too. All it takes is one FUBAR and we're all looking bad. USPA needs to consider that, too. Additionally, what about any insurance liabilities? What happens when a not-of-legal-age coach takes out a student or vice-versa? Jarrett likely is a great kid. In all my email correspondences (save one) with him, he's been reasonably adult. However, his attitudes presented here on DZ.com alone (no matter how hard he protests that he's a "different person" on DZ.com) should be cause for pause when considering granting him a waiver to become a coach. Maybe being a coach isn't terribly glorified nor important in the foodchain of the skygods, but the rating does provide for people that don't have licences to skydive with at least reasonably competent skydivers that can help them learn.
  22. You can use a fine tweezer, this usually can get into the 2.5mm hole. Did the middle of the connector stay in there, or is it hollow inside? If it's hollow inside, you can usually put a little rubber cement on the end of a toothpick, "thread" the toothpick into the hollow part of the connector, and let it set. Then just pull it out. Another alternative is to use a small metal screw and thread that into the connector. You need to be sure you don't expand the metal around the collar of the connector or else it won't come out cleanly. Failing all that, head for most any electronic repair shop, they can open and remove for you. I've not opened the guts of the HC5 yet, so can't give you good direction there. If it's like the HC3, it's got a small ribbon connector on that block around which you'll need to be cautious.
  23. First, nowhere in my culture does it proffer the concept of the Great Spirit being a single deity, that concept is proven to have come post-Euro incursion. Second, my culture isa polytheistic culture that is *finally* figuring out the damage the bible and it's proponents have brought on our culture and at the moment, it's a confused mess (has been since the late 60's). Finally, in the Dine' culture specifically, the concept of hozhoo' is personal, not universal. In other words, although it might cause my family some consternation that I'm of a different opinion than some of them, I also don't find the opinion as being counter to cultural ideals of the past. That said, you have hit on the exact reason that I've looked for other answers, because Christianity is by far the worse experience to hit *any* indigenous culture around the world, IMO.
  24. www.trendmicro.com Housecall scan. Does a great job for free.
  25. I know Laurence by his posts on several forums. He's a reasonably experienced guy, does not make his living in video/film I don't believe. Very consistent poster on a variety of subjects, he's recently discovered HDV. He's not a skydiver. Out side of that, I don't think it's appropriate to discuss someone outside of a forum where they post, do you?
