  1. You're aware of how much "the money" might be, right? In other words, you can come up with 100k (in advance) if you have a brain or heart problem? Or even say....65K if you chop a finger or toe? Or half a million if you end up with a mid-term hospital stay? You're ready to come up with that kind of money if an uninsured driver slams into you on the street? Drive-by gangbanger shoots you at the supermarket? Other incident well beyond your control? Health insurance is just as much (if not more) a "must" than automotive insurance, given the cost of care. I can easily come up with the 10-30K if I hit someone's car and have to repair/replace their car and maybe pay for some minor hospitalization. I can't come up with the kind of coin mentioned previously.
  2. Hello, I can't find anywhere on the site how to order this. Can anyone help, please? Thks It's also available from ParaGear if you'd prefer to purchase from a dealer you know.
  3. I've never scratched a load because Mr. X was on it, I just won't go in his stick. I believe he's about got it figured out, however. There are a couple others that keep telling him "I don't think so, thanks for asking."
  4. This one can go on your Rebel. I'll bet they'd throw in balloons for free. I'll teach you how to tie it so it looks cool. If it looks cool, it'll focus better.
  5. Yanni doesn't play the flute thing. He does the piano thing. I do the flute thing. Geez, slap one woman, he's branded for life (kidding, please) He really is a very nice guy, BTW.
  6. What *color* Permacel are you using? It's not the gunk *on* the lens that one tries to avoid. It's gunk that gets inside the barrel housing, focus ring, zoom ring, or lens mount. Or worse, damaging the coatings on the lenses themselves. OK, OK, Uncle! I give up. It's alright if you use gaffers on your lenses. I won't. I don't eat broccoli either. But you can. And we'll both probably be alright.
  7. can you assure that the tape is always stuck down? Can you be sure it's *never* leaving gunk on your lens housing? Different grades of Permacel (and other brands) will leave some slight residue depending on heat, humidity, and/or other factors. Not all gaffers is made the same. Please bear in mind that I don't differentiate treatment of a junky 18/55mm lens that is worth $50.00 and an Angenieux worth $50K. I'm probably being too cautious.
  8. I don't have a "theory;" the fact is, the people involved with this proposal when I posted, excepting a couple, all have low D numbers. That may or may not mean they're great skydivers. As I've come to learn in my progress through this sport, license numbers only mean they've been around for a while, jump numbers only mean they've jumped a lot. Neither are a substantial indicator of intelligence, skill, or common sense. I've seen jumpers with 50 jumps that are very skilled, and seen one or two with a couple thousand jumps that I won't jump with. and vice versa. But I'm still glad someone is trying to do something, anything beyond the status quo. I'm sure we've *all* had close experiences in a pattern (or out of one).
  9. Well....several responses (and other posts) suggest folks are using the stock 18-55 zoom lens that came with their camera, so I'd assume many are using zooms, even if they are locked down. Outside of that..."You're Fired." Oooh. I feel like Trump.
  10. Gaffers or not, it attracts dirt, which is never good to have around glass, which is why I ask. Taping over a vidcam door, holding something that flutters, none of that is a big deal, IMO, but putting sticky anything on glass, especially zoom lenses, really goes against my way of thinking. Yet, it appears several people are doing it.
  11. Stowbands are great for this, especially tandem stow bands. [edit; erik beat me to the comment] For big lenses, the balloons clowns make sculptures with are terrific, they can be tied around even the largest glass.
  12. Just curious... The camera guys at our DZ use gaffers tape (or worse, duct tape) to fix focal length on their lenses. In the broadcast production world, that's a fast pink slip. Is this really common in skydiving photography?
  13. You apparently don't do much work with the government. Making a PBJ sandwich is difficult for them.
  14. Because Panasonic didn't send me an SD3, although I'd asked for one.
  15. Any camera store should offer this. you mean the large thumbscrew, yes? Also, they can be found in many places online, and in the US, most hardware stores have some variant of the large, flat bolt.
  16. If the reviewer liked the slow motion, all I can say is that he/she either didn't look at the camera for real, or is a total idiot. I'm confident they didn't jump the CX6. The slow motion on ALL these smaller cams is greatly reduced resolution (512 x 240) that looks pretty bad in SD, let alone HD. Ifyou have an HC3/5/7, test it out. Put it on an HD screen and watch the macroblocking. Further, the slow motion isn't accessible in skydiving. 3 sec/6 sec/12 seconds doesn't provide much during freefall. Fades are on the CX, I find them of no use. You'll want to Xfer the data from the card to the computer, which means editing anyway. I guess you can use the RGB output to input to an analog mixer, however. [edited to add: Panasonic is sending me a new SD1 to work with.]
  17. Very few standard DVD players can playback HD content. If they have DivX or Nero capability, *some* can. If they have HDMI out, a few can. You can burn HD DVD files to a standard DVD for computer playback, same with Blu-ray content, but these will *not* play in any SD DVD player. They will play in Playstation 3, etc.
  18. Surprised to see a photographer sitting behind the door/over the toilet. That doesn't exactly help CG issues. It looks like there is someone next to him as well?
  19. If you don't have a Mac, you can create the reflective areas in Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas or AIST pretty easily. Same with the DOF images at various depths/3D. Very fast, very simple, and can be very sexy to look at. Motion is a great tool, however.
  20. yes, you can transfer DV/HDV over firewire to another DV/HDV camcorder. Quality of the camcorder doesn't matter, because you're merely moving bits, not pictures. In other words, think of each camera as being a linear hard drive. No loss in quality.
  21. Ahhh....so you and Michael Moore's predominant position are in complete agreement.
  22. Not at all supported by facts. Even if you eliminated insurance companies overnight, and found some entity to administer everything for free, the actual cost of the care is rising much faaster than the overal cost of living (by 4 to 10 times). . WTF are you talking about? The State of Utah is lying when they say that the inmate has received 90k in medical treatment throughout his various incarcerations? The Corrections Departmentis lying when they say they've had this guy in for 3 MRI's this year alone? Or is it a lie that Algier shot/killed a prison guard when he escaped? Which isn't a fact? All of em' are. Public knowledge, unless of course, everyone is lying. Given an apparent right wing proclivity, it would make sense that it's difficult to discern facts from lies.
  23. Nude tandems will really help skydiving make a comeback.
  24. There is no LANC on the CX7. With tape not being part of the product, Sony is not required to put it on the camera. Wireless remote is the new tool for these cheaper cams
  25. Hmmm....that list above identifies roughly 75% of public broadcasting...and has been for a long, long time. If 75% of the media is broadcasting a particular agenda, would you say they're the initiators or initiatees? You're right; the media should quit swinging hammers. Since it will never happen your opinion (and mine) means nothing. I wish the sky would occasionally be fuschia, and I wish that Princess Di would return as president of the USA. Since that will never happen, what I want is meaningless. Until that day comes, hammers will be swung, and the American public can choose to be hit by hammers, or they can become educated on why the hammers are being swung. Understanding both sides of the issue is probably a good place to start.
