If a teen is in a car wreck and an open cell phone is found on the floor of the car, there is no way to absolutely rule in or out, that the cell phone played a role. Read back in the past years of all the guys that thought small canopies weren't playing much of a role in the increase in low turn incidents. There is still no way to absolutely rule that these guys that died wouldn't have hooked it in under a 210 either. Usually, where there is smoke there is fire, no?

Not very sure about that, but still.... we just love it this way In this case, it's more a problem of 'staying back' Come over to Europe, new experiences..... If that's how you like flying; TERRIFIC!!!! Great for you. But please don't suggest the reason you do is because "That's how PdG flew." The discipline has evolved (I hope). I've been to Europe once this year. And will be back in September. Hope to see you there this time!

And yet another incident over the weekend involving a small format camera and a low time jumper. Keep those stories comin' folks. JimGoFast; I'm curious which instructors at your DZ are saying you're good with jumping a camera?

Drift Innovation HD170 - New Competitor to the GoPro
DSE replied to aardvarkeater's topic in Photography and Video
other than the company doesn't respond to emails (sent 3)? -
you're tall and lanky...we'll see if you can bring it home. Failing that, you can take this one....
-
Nah, we're more high tech than that. Carry your cell phone. You might be landing off. The trophy is quite nice.

The little Sony Cybershots and Canon Powershots are hard to beat both in Auto and Program modes. Super simple, super fast, and they can be manual or auto. I carry a Cybershot HXV pretty much everywhere. The video is reasonable, autoshots (even from a fast moving motorcycle) are pretty good, and it's a point n' shoot that has a decent lens on it with optical stab and decent focal length range. My 5 and 7D's are heavily used, but they dont' go on a bike for those fast/fun trips.

We always refer to the original body position of Patrick de Gayardon... Make sense ? True it gives you forward speed 1- We like it this way 2- allows every one to be there despite their weight (no extra fabric needed) 3-more speed, more accurate I'd sure like to come fly with you all, but I'd also sure like to think that if PdG were still around, he'd be flying suits (still) for maximum flight value rather than being a lawn dart aiming for the ground with forward speed. Some of us have no problem with the "down." It's the staying "up" that is the challenge. Put some armwing into it, it's like Viagra for the soul.

if it's indoors, I'd spend out for the Sony CX110. Does well in low light, very detailed. Can be instantly burned to DVD or HD disc

We finally got our landowner permissions for the specialty runs. For those that don't have FB for access to the pages, here are the exit points. For those that are missing out...you're missing out. We have one mountain run for very experienced WS and one for less experienced but want to have a fun run. Don't forget the distance challenge Sat night; bring your game! Y' might be bringin' home the trophy. My money is on Callantine.

Wrong. the tapes, with a line caught on them, require well over 100 lbs to rip off. The camera mount will break before the tape rips off. Already been tested.

Do you jump with a hook knife and have you used it
DSE replied to JoeyRamone's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
True, but you may find it not sharp enough if you end up needing it. IMO, hook knives shouldn't be touched except in emergency, other than periodic inspection to be sure the blade is sharp, shiny, ready to use. I jump with one, but I jump with a good one. I've seen too many of the cheapo plastic ones break or have blades fallen out. -
Optima is an audible, not a logger. Solo is an audible, but not a logger. Neptune can do both. ProTrack can do both. If you're using the Neptune as a wrist alti, it's no longer an audible. I use the L&B Altitrack, it is not an audible, but a logger and analog indicator only. I'm a big fan of L&B; their customer service is second to none. IMO, Paralog is the best logbook because it reads a lot of data Jumptrack doesn't. I prefer the look, use, and interface of Jumptrack, but it doesn't import GPS data. Paralog doesn't import data from the Altitrack. Were I to have the best of all worlds, I'd use Paralog with my Altitrack and QStarz GPS.

Coupla reasons to not do this; A-As you mentioned, camera helmets are spendy, and if you're like most future vidiots, you'll end up regretting whatever you purchased now because you'll know a lot more about what you really want later. B-having a camera helmet now adds a lot to the temptation of putting on a camera early. IMO, get a cheapo ProTec or a used helmet. They protect your head just as well, are great platforms for putting on a small format camera when you reach the level of starting to fly a camera, and they're super easy to resell.

Thanks for the feedback. Good point about never opening the visor (can't see why I would).
-
Yes, you're just playing. Either that, or you truly don't grasp video. For those that don't understand the technicalities, please don't for one breath believe that "one half of interlaced video is wrong."

I'm looking for a full-face helmet to be mostly used for wingsuiting and radio communication in freefall. Quiet is fairly important. Recommendations?

You can walk into any REI, Dicks, motorcycle shop, or online store and buy a small format camera. No one will ask you nor know/care what you're using it for. It's a camera, a commodity item (unlike a Velo). GoPro isn't at all to blame. It's the ignorance and foolishness (and wrecklessness) of individuals that is responsible.

Will be held at Skydive Utah on July 8. Chicago-SummerFest Utah-Last week of August There will be other locations as the PF tour kicks off later this summer. The PFC course has changed significantly from what it once was. Some of the program addtions; ~A current USPA Coach rating is now required. ~Two Eval jumps with Satisfactory scores (you have three skydives to achieve two Satisfactory scores) ~Six hours (approx) of class including ground demonstration of instructional proficiency. ~Annual renewal of rating with record of people coached/FFC's. ~Proof of Coaching currency Existing PFI's, please note the email you received about renewal. Also note that the PFI title is now "Phoenix-Fly Coach" and not "Instructor." There will be no more conversions of BMI to PFC ratings. Looking forward to seeing interested Coach candidates challenge the course! Not to mention that the new patch is pretty cool. Feel free to PM me with questions.

I agree... In DSE's statement he says, "The relative worker who was nearly hit had no idea another person was that close until he heard a canopy opening just below and to his side." I know the camera guy was in the wrong. All I'm saying is regardless of being high, low or otherwise every jumper should be as aware of their own airspace as possible at pull time. I did say that the high guy may want to consider a quick pitch, I see the flaws in that statement... and agree with you that it would be better to track for separation. Now you're contradicting your previous post (which is good, it means maybe you did learn something). "camera guy" (who was actually freeflying, using the camera to film his heading), wasn't tracking. Beginning freeflyers often slide all around the sky ergo; "tracking." He was asked to wait 7-10 seconds. Video shows he waited 4. The "RW" guy was on a rating evaluation skydive. He did everything (including tracking in the correct direction) correctly in the skydive. There is no possible way he could have "cleared his airspace" as you said was our problem.

There's no way you guys would come up with enough money. OK...you've established that there *is* a price, albeit high. Name it.
-
Says the guy that cracked my L&B Viso. I really don't like digital faces. The analog face coupled with the digital bennies of the Altitrack are the other thing that keep me staying. If I have ONE complaint about L&B it's that the JumpTrack software desperately needs an update to include GPS.

No, that's not porn. It's "erotica" and I'd enjoy shooting some erotic pix of Her Hotness. Half of good erotica is eyes and smiles. She's surely got those down pat. Anyone want to start a collection to get Her Hotness to pose for some tintype French Postcard shots?

L&B and Alti both provide outstanding customer service, and with a critical component like an altimeter, you want a manufacturer standing solidly behind you. I've got several L&B devices, and love them and their service. I'd like an N3, but given L&B's service...it's tough to switch.
