Jumping a camera with Military experience but without the BSR #s
DSE replied to bigjonwa's topic in Photography and Video
I'm not sure what your point is though. If you're trying to suggest that you've been jumping camera in the military realm and therefore OK to jump camera in the civilian realm...I'd strongly disagree. What one does in the military environment prepares them well for some civilian activities, but I don't accept that camera flying is one of them. Otherwise, why not just let a dude that has 25 jumps with rucks or bundles start flying tandems too? Either way...it would appear you're trying to engage an argument (which you stated you didn't want to start), and if so...the thread will be locked. This argument is worn thin in hundreds or thousands of posts. I don't think the argument is going to produce any new information. Military gets unique rules, and in that environment...those unique rules seem to work really well. However, a *lot* of people trained in the military do not function remotely as well outside of the well-disciplined military environment when engaged in similar activities in the civliian world. Further, when one enters the civilian world, then the civilian rules apply. (whether we're talking about skydiving or anything else). -
Jumping a camera with Military experience but without the BSR #s

You cannot even begin to equate the training discipline (mental and otherwise) of the military to even the most dedicated skydiver, IMO. It has not so much to do with the individual that can manage this sort of training as the training environment itself. I work with a great number of military skydivers on a daily/weekly basis. I've seen them performing in their military duties and as civilians. They are not the same person in each environment. -
I think somewhere along the line, the community forgot that we're validated merely by our efforts and existence in the sky. A peak performer is someone who insists on peak performance from himself, and "records" or "successful formations" should reflect that performance (IMO).

wanna pick me up from MCO at 6:30 on Friday a.m.?

It may be, but for clarification, this is NOT coming from Phoenix-Fly. But it would be cool if someone wanted to provide a rental service.

I strongly disagree with this statement. You're spinning/accelerating under a bad canopy/linetwists/whatever in a big suit; the LAST thing you want to have happen is that you're whipped off of the canopy and get stable. Close your fabric down (you won't be flying that fast) keep your pelvis down (there's that "arch" thing again), and get your reserve out ASAP. Screw worrying about getting stable. The Incidents forum has several "waited to get stable" fatalities. [edited after seeing Jarno's post] I too, am a proponent of RSL/MARD (although I don't jump one myself) and a proponent of hard housings. Twists can easily get into risers. Check out 3:50 or this one at 2:30, you'll see why hard housings are valuable.

Another major annoyance are those that use fisheyes AND have pieces of their ringsight, helmet, goggles, bungie, tape, or any other fixed object in their lens view.
-
It has no flames on it. Therefore it isn't fast enough.

http://vimeo.com/19921378 A few contributing factors in this one. FWIW, the rig/PC are brand new with fewer than 20 jumps.

Roughly 100 videos here. Some really fun outside views of flatspins and recovery, newbies in barrel rolls, etc.

the template is too curved for my Tonfly 3X due to the size of the flat area. It is just right on my Bonehead Mindwarp if I move it high up away from the bottom/collar. I'd prefer it to be as low on the back of the helmet as possible, which means I'd like the mount to be more flat (regardless of which helmet I was putting the mount on).

Accelerated Free Fall. Was your first jump a tandem jump, or with an instructor(s) holding you on your jump?

Knocked out during skydive, what do you do?
DSE replied to fasted3's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is a good reason that you want to know who is on bigways or other organized jumps in which you may be participating. Ask questions about who has been invited to participate, and be sure you're comfortable with everyone on the load. This won't assure "no problems" but it definitely reduces the risk factor. -
The optima II is the loudest out there, I believe. The NEOXs was loudest until the Optima, which has a volume so loud that if you're setting it on the plane, people on the opposite end will bitch about how loud it is. Plus, you can plug it into a HypEye for a visual backup. The Solo II doesn't have adjustable volume or tones. It's not just the volume, it's also about having a variable frequency because there are more and less annoying tones. Choose the most annoying and it'll wake you up.

Was terrific having you out. Don't forget to reset your audible

Knocked out during skydive, what do you do?

I watched a guy who was knocked out (or otherwise incapacited) when he deployed. The AAD made no difference. He still didn't survive. -
If you're on my Facebook, you've seen the almost-daily vids that go up of students and whatnot, but this past weekend was a lot of fun with a bunch of newbies. Elsinore Wingsuit Gang Thanks to all that participated. There was also a fun jump with Matt Santa-Maria. The voice at the start of the video is Gary Kramer (jbag).

Balling up will work with small suits but generally will not work well with larger suits or airlocked suits Additionally, everyone knows how to arch with their pelvis deep into the curve. Closing knees and hands on butt works very fast. and very well. Congrats on figuring out your best answer, and thank you for sharing the story!

That's exactly how I pack it. It's a recommended method for PPF rigs; I suspect that's where the moniker "french tickler" comes from.
-
That's good practice. Many wingsuiters don't know how to get out of spins, and some of em' only know old ways that don't work well with bigger suits.

I'm unaware you've been accused of lying? Previous posts claim technical issues. Now it's acquisition source or training or... Promised by whom? Where? When? They spent 20K and then "dropped it?" Gaping hole indeed, Rhys. That just doesn't wash with anyone. Find me a post where I've sold my software (Actually Sony's software now). I've merely answered the questions of others. Further, please find me a post, PM, or email where you've been "threatened with legal action." This statement is an outright lie. You're lying. You've never been threatened with legal action. You've been banned from this (and other) forums. Agreed. However, you've made it a point to consistently attack the software making claims that you cannot back up nor provide any evidence of use, purchase, technical support issue, or otherwise. Instead you claim someone (presumably in NZ or Oz) purchased multiple licenses for Vegas/Production Assistant and had massive problems from technical, installation, and/or use. Yet they didn't make a single call to Oz or US technical support, they have never contacted the PA technical support team, there have been no emails from Oz or NZ regarding Vegas/PA tech support, and there are no multiple registration license keys issued to any DZ in NZ or Oz outside of 3 dropzones, all of whom I'm in reasonably regular contact with. We both know you have a hair up your ass for me whenever you get the opportunity to yank it, you do it. And that's all good, until it comes to the point of unsubstantiated accusations and misrepresentations. And with that, this thread is locked until someone has something -useful- to add to it.

I know there are some gaping holes in this story. If the IT person had problems and he was at all worth his salt, he'd go directly to the designer of the software. It sounds like somebody threw up their hands and decided they liked macs better :P So far I've set up several Vegas/PA systems at various DZs, or I've simply mailed systems out and trained users via telephone. It usually takes a few hours for training, and they're off and running, I'll get a question here or there afterwards, but otherwise the tech support line is pretty quiet. Chris Not to mention that US nor Australian Sony technical support has had a single call from any NZ or Oz dropzone..."gaping holes" is an incredibly generous description. Funny how the story has (yet again) shifted.

Knowing Freeflaw, I gotta applaud how he approaches questions (in real life). Asking lots of questions is how Bill Booth figured out some of the answers he's found. You're right, there is no 100% solution...but 99.5% is a lot better than say...95%, IMO. Because of these questions, gear failure has little relevance to incidents or fatalities. Freeflaw, I pack my bridle with the "French Tickler" so that the bridle routes under the container flaps and never over. This doesn't 'prevent' a PCIT, but it definitely reduces the likelihood.
-
Third time you've thrown this out there, and I do not believe it. New Magic Australia (distributor for Sony products in Oz and NZ also say they're unaware of any DZ that purchased "four powerful systems" and they are the helm of support in Oz and NZ, in addition to the Madison and San Antonio support facilities. Further, I've looked at ALL the PA license codes issued to NZ, and there isn't a point source that has purchased four copies of the app. Therefore, either they don't exist, or they're using pirate-ware and deserve any issues they have.

I'm prevented from commenting much due to legal action in progress. However, it's funny as hell to read a guy who doesn't know jack sh** about Production Assistant or Vegas and it's SDK telling me and others that I don't know what I'm talking about. Congrats, you baited me well, I bit. I bow to your skills as a master-baiter.
