  1. Every one I've seen was cheap, with coverage like 50-100K. Useless. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  2. That's what the police and FBI does. However that's a lot of work with few success stories. There are several reasons, and probably the most important is that several large forgery factories are in Mexico, so it is very hard to close them. It is the same as fighting drugs - it can be done, and it should be done, but there will be no successful victory which ends the drug selling forever. It might work. The only question is how? Currently you have to submit the list of number-name-DOB of your employees in writing to SSA, and wait for reply. The reply may take a while. Obviously the employer could not wait for three months while SSA runs the check, and confirms the numbers, so the interface must be fast and easily accessible. Like an online web site. However this still doesn't solve a faked identity problem though, when a person uses someone's real name and SSN by forging identity papers. The most important thing is not to choose the business to raid; at least in California a lot of people seems to know where the illegals work, so you just need to ask locals. The question one is how to do the raid; obviously those people do not pick up grapes with their passports or driver licenses in pocket. Some of them might claim themselves as US citizens, so it is not easy even to legally recognize an illegal immigrant. The question two is what to do next; anyone who's deported has a right to get a hearing in the immigration court, and this might create major burden for them. And the question three is what to do after the court decided to remove them - what makes it difficult for them to cross the border again? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  3. And I don't see how it is proposed to be prevented. There is basically no reason for employers to do so, unless they run background check on a person. The law does not require them to validate SSNs, so they do not. The raids raise more questions than answers. How could they qualify legal immigrants vs illegal during the raid? I don't think they have passports with them. And how did they justify the raid - or they just go to any business they want (or do not like)? Or some crimes. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  4. Might be not; depends on how their religion defines it. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  5. In California you get your driver license by mail. DMV only issues temporary driving licenses (i.e. pieces of paper). * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  6. Every life insurance policy I've checked so far was either excluding skydiving, or unreasonably expensive, like $2K/year for 500K coverage. Looking through the statistics, I'd say it is more important to have health insurance which doesn't exclude skydiving. Having disability insurance would be nice, but seems like individual disability insurance is not even an option for skydivers. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  7. That's not even important question, as I already have an answer. You give me one hundred bucks before you die - you go to Heaven. You do not - you go to Hell. Simple, heh? If you don't believe me - I talk to God every day, and He confirmed this is true. Still do not believe? I have a book, and it's written in that book. I admit, I wrote that book itself, but it was inspired by God. Why I think so? Because the Book says it was inspired by God, so it must be true. Still do not believe? Wait until you die, you'll regret then. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  8. That's really funny! So you do not believe that this "organized everything" came from nothing, but instead you believe that the Creator of that "organized everything" itself came from nothing? That's really absurd. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  9. It's already full of holes :) What level of English speaking is required, who is going to test it and how? Is "my name is Sanches Gonzales" enough, or they have to bring TOEFL certificate? If the card is "unforgeable", you cannot give it to them right at border. It should be made on a special facility with limited access. Even driver licenses (which are not unforgeable) are not issued in DMV. You also missed other important checks, like identity check, and background check. The problem with those checks is that they take a while - up to 2 weeks minimum. If we combine this with the card issue, it means that you cannot avoid visa/card applications, and waiting some time before they are issued. This makes the proposed scenario impossible. "The number for tax purposes" already exists; it is called ITIN. Anyone can get it - you don't even have to be in US. Could you please explain the "get health care" part? Did you mean free health care, or paid/insurance-based health care? If you mean free health care, I see no reason why they should even get it, and if you mean paid health care, I see no reason for this restriction. You missed one important point: in your scenario could they work everywhere, or they still need some kind of employer authorization? If they could work everywhere, this "visa" is much better than every U.S. working visa, and basically could be considered a Green Card itself. How it supposed to work? The whole country raided by Border Patrol checking for illegals? So you mentioned background check here; how is it supposed to be done on border? Just to give you an idea, issuing a 1-year _guest_ visa to U.S. currently takes around 10 days, which are also spend on background check. Background check for immigrant visa could take months, or even years. Most likely not. The world is balanced, and as soon as you fix one thing, something else will be broken. There are no illegal immigrants in North Korea, but they have other problems. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  10. Yes, they could. Actually they are doing it right now. However it only work on a very low level, where you can just replace one person with another for no cost (like picking up grapes). If uneducated, unexperienced illegals are your real job competitors, there is something wrong here. This is already a law, but it doesn't work. Basically what illegal has to do is a fill I-9, put random SSN, and check "I'm a U.S. cinizen" box; current law does not require employers to verify the employee legal status through INS/USCIS or SSA. The only time they could get caught is when employer reports the person income (and paid taxes) to IRS, and they return "SSN name/DOB/number mismatch". Are there a lot of Border Patrol officers available? I thought there is even not enough to patrol the border itself. Look irrelevant to me. Do illegals receive welfare? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  11. This case looks different to me. She just falled in love, but not married him yet, so the sin hasn't been commited. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  12. If you read about witch hunt, you'll find even scarier testimonials - like a priest personally tortured his mother and sister to death. There is a lot of similar examples of actions of the people who believe to have the God behind them - you can start from the Bible itself. Those are excellent examples of hypocricy in society. Yes, it is wrong to kill (me), but it is still ok to kill (criminals/Bin Laden/Iraq/self-defense, and so on). If you look on it like that, you'll see that basically their society is no different than ours. We also have death penalty for some criminals, and people go watch it. Don't know about cell phone recordings though, except the Saddam one. Not to mention there is a huge difference between just killing someone, and killing in the name of God. While most societies object the first one, the second one is sometime tolerated and even supported (if the killed was "wrong" person) in any society based on religion. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  13. Your whole definitions of what's right and what's wrong greatly depends on the society you grown up in. Look on Muslim fanatics who were told that killing unfaithful is right thing - they are SURE they do right thing, as they pay their own life. And if you pick up any moral topics like adultery, and ask a lot of people, you'd easily find both the people who thinks it is completely ok to have an affair, and the people who thinks it should be punished by death. And "acts of right and wrong" are very vague itself. Is it right to have a death penalty (i.e. kill) for a murderer? It won't help a person who was murdered anyway. Is it right to have a death penalty for drug dealers, like they have in China? Is it right to have a death penalty for contempt of the King, like they have in Thailand? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  14. I think they do believe that they did right thing. Maybe a few do not believe, but they are smart enough to keep their mouth shut. Those who did not, already had their chance to share her destiny as well. That's what every religion did before it was restricted by law - just look on Middle Ages history. Why should their be different? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  15. Yep, absolutely correct. As you remember, "witches" in Middle Ages were burned in public as well. They didn't have phones to video it, but it has been described in a lot of books. That's what most religions are for. Suffer and restrict yourself while you live, and you'll be rewarded after you're dead. When expanded to the most radical form, it ends up with Muslim terrorists, Christian which hunts and crusaders, and stuff like we're discussing. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  16. Our God eats their God for breakfast, having George W. behind. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  17. Well, some people could even believe in this :) - mightl be issued a Green Card, but refused to entry to US according to current law for 10 years. Or the bill is changing INA as well? Also there are more categories who are banned from GC. Does the bill exclude them all, or not? Like people with AIDS? People who earn money but didn't pay taxes? [eply] People who are here illegally can get a Z-visa if they entered before Jan of this year. If they don't apply for a green card they can stay in the US and work. What company it allows to work for? If for any company - I see no difference with a green card. If they need to get employment authorization (like H1B), most of employers will not be able to get it - there is no way they could prove no US person wants to and is qualified do this job. Agreed. The current problem is backlog. People have filed GC applications in 2000, were approved, and still haven't got their GCs yet because of infamous "name check". Something should be changed; applications need to be processed faster. Sounds like J1 visa. This will not work. Health insurance is expensive, and even not all Americans could afford it. I expect this to be subject to fraud, like it is with auto insurance - they get it to register in DMV, and then cancel it in 2 weeks, and get a refund. It would be easier to collect from them, as they would have SSNs, and legal wages, but the amount of money you could collect from them hardly justify even collection costs itself. I still could not understand one thing: those illegals are now employed, because they are paid less than minimal wage, and have to work overtime for free. If they become legal, they will have to be paid minimal wage, and overtimes. This means that they could not be employed there anymore, as an employer who wishes to pay minimal wage would not go to "grey area" hiring illegals - it's already a crime. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  18. You just don't understand. Those people do love her, and this is the way to show love. According to their religion, they have just saved her from eternal sorrow in Hell (a Very Bad Thing). A very little price for such an achievement, isn't it? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  19. Oh, I'm so terribly sorry for using unapproved analogy, Your Honor! Could you please enlighten me where should I get the list of approved analogies? P.S. That's very nice from you to only reply to the least important question of the whole post, and completely ignore everything else. It looks familiar; do you believe in Jesus? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  20. It does, as this part of Nevada is still US. Where did I say that? Yes, if the harm of those actions exist and could be proven. There are only few of them, though. And in most cases you most likely think incorrectly; you have no idea what I would support. Yes, they have. The difference is that having some moral values does not mean that everyone else has to act according to those moral values. For example, I do not go to church, but I do not tell you that you should not either. I only want nobody force me and my children to go to church - even though you are sure we all will go to hell when we die. What are your arguments? Just please don't bring stupid "studies", I haven't seen any non-biased yet. Why? Just because you have nothing to reply? Or you think that your Safeway cashier is really happy with their job, and not just a victim of the system? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  21. The fact is that prostitution is legal in some counties in US (for example, in Sin City in Nevada). Therefore the claim that prostitution is illegal in US is invalid, as Nevada is part of US. AFAIK prostitution is not subject of federal laws, but to state, or (in case of Nevada) local county laws. This is very generic statement, which is not true in most cases. Generally only a small percentage of the population actually likes to work - and even less people are happy with what they do. Most people work because they just have to, and my local cashier in Safeway is a typical "victim" as well - just doing different kind of work. IMHO some "crimes" should be decriminalized no matter whether some people of the government are doing it or not. This is not a reason, obviously. The main reason is that I see no really justified objections for that, and the only I've heard so far are based on "moral values", or other stuff like Jesus and the Bible, which basically has no real value. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  22. This assumes that prostitution is illegal in US. This is not correct; it is just not legal everywhere. But it is not illegal in US. And I see nothing wrong with "prostitution legalization" (decriminalization, actually) either. As you could see, making it "illegal" does not help; if the people who're publically committed to maintain "high morals" are guilty in that, what should we expect from average Joe, who hasn't committed to anything? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  23. Because there IS public transportation system. The only place in US I've seen so far which had something that could be called a public transportation system was NYC. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  24. Hmm. After the illegals are legalized, they are not a cheap labor anymore. At least they now must be paid minimal wage and overtime, so I'd say this is not a concern anyway. * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
  25. But I was told you need to know a secret handshake for this one to work :) Do they speak a secret code version of Russian as well? * Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
