Coming into the job at the start of the Clinton recession, with the added cost and turmoil of 9/11 and the Iraq war? And the fact that despite all that, the Dow is at record levels? Damn skippy. The DOW is at record levels for many resons, most of which hurt the average American. Many companies have taken money usually reserved for their workers and re-distributed it to the bottom line. Very few get health coverage anymore, whereas years ago health coverage was a given at a full-time job. Pensions are virtualy non-existant, and under Bush many companies have been allowed to rescind their pensions years after their workforce has retired. All of that money is going to the bottom line, hurting the working man, but helping exectutives and stock holders. In addition, the war is keeping the economy moving by pumping hundreds of billions into contractors, while also driving up tax revenue artificially. The working people could give a shit about the DOW. Maybe if I had $1 million in stock I would care, but I'd rather have health care and a pension to ensure future stability than gamble my money (the stock market is a SERIOUS gamble for the little guy) and hope for the best. US citizens need non-molested information in order to make decisions relating to leadership/elections. If media in the USA, or available to US citizens, is represented as free media reporting, our democracy becomes a sham, as voters will be making decisions based on false or misleading information.
