  1. Mark, Looks like you live close to a cool DZ in NC. Anyway, AFF may be the way to go, but talk with Chuck Blue (SkymonkeyONE) as he manages the school at Raeford and can answer all your questions. Shark D-24499, AFF-I
  2. Being on staff and part of the landing police, yes. It's not like we seek them out, but they make themselves highly visible and noticable. The jumper-in-question is more of a danger to himself, rather than to others. He's already been approached by the S&TA and was a little defensive. I'm taking a different approach with said jumper and making suggestions based on what I've witnessed. Sort of a debrief to this
  3. Anyone who is in SoCal should plan to attend the canopy seminars during "Bridge the Gap." It has already been held this year, but if you get a chance, you should plan on attending the seminars by John LeBlanc next year. Look for the article in an upcoming issue of Parachutist.
  4. Welcome to SoCal. It must suck to live within minutes of 2 of the hottest DZs. And I ain't talkin bout the weather either.
  5. Can I come over now and mess it up a 'lil???
  6. Hey Rosa, Hope yer feelin better by the weekend. Yep, night jumps this weekend, which means H2O training the day before. (BTW, we got a pool at El Snore, now, but not deep enough for our fun.) Me and Yoyo will be hosting the class. Of course you need a shark in the water for this one. Anywho, my diagnosis is that you are homesick.
  7. That depends on the DZ and the instructor. We put a lot of emphasis on canopy control throughout the student training. I start it at the FJC. There are also times when I watch students under canopy and debrief them if it was a solo jump. If they jumped with another instructor I will consult with that instuctor before they debrief the student. You are correct, regulations don't teach; instuctors do. Do you own a SIM? Check Section 2, paragraph A. Having one in place may reduce the risk factors and prompt one to acquire the knowledge.
  8. Bob, Congratulations on your first skydive! Do you remember who your tandem instructor was? I am a pilot as well, and there are a lot of other fixed/rotary wing pilots that are regular jumpers. As a pilot, you might also discover that your flying skills will help you adapt to canopy control and landing patterns. Freefall is a different story, but we will assist and educate you to become a skydiver. I am on the staff at Skydive Elsinore and work every weekend at the DZ. Please visit our website into the training costs, etc. If you have other questions regarding the training you can send me a PM as I am an AFF Instructor. Regards, Mark
  9. I finally saw it. Had to sift through 20 pages of BM pics/stories, but finally saw it. Made it into Parachutist a few times, but this is the first time I've had my picture in Skydiving. You'll have to hunt me down if you want your free beer.
  10. You're a smart guy, but the characters mean Ginsu.
  11. Congrats! If anything, it is a beerable event!
  12. Derek, Thanks for sharing the info. This has been one of the more useful posts in a long time.
  13. There's probably another contest, this time to guess the name of the new canopy.
  14. Hey, don't ferget the Sharkway 4 way with the Bytch block formation. I think that should be part of the dive pool.
  15. Okay, you get your first paycheck and what do you do??? You buy a fuckin kids book! Shoulda gotten some porn and a case of beer for your buds!
  16. Whoa, seems like I missed all the fun! Get better soon Lisa!
  17. At Skydive Elsinore, Catagory D-1 is AFF Level 5 in which the student is performing 90 degree turns.
  18. Hey Cora, Bummer, but it's probably for the better. Besides, SoCal is a nice place to be, even if you are still unemployed. And as ya know, lotsa r-dub and butt-sniffing skydiving going on over here. See ya when I see ya.
  19. Congratulations! Make sure he packs for you, too.
  20. Congrats! If you are around our hood in SoCal this fall you can see Jay break the record again at Elsinore.
