A-License requirements -- What is considered a "Skydive"?
yamtx73 replied to Sttucker13's topic in Safety and Training
Please explain why it matters. When I jump with a student, I sign their log book and make any comments I think will be helpful. What does that have do with whether or not the jump counts towards a license jump number requirement? I note whether or not they've met a proficiency requirement. Am I missing something here? Maybe it's just me but I feel that an instructor SHOULD know what is required, not only for the proficiency card, but the BSR's and what a student needs to become a skydiver... including requirements for an A license. A-License requirements -- What is considered a "Skydive"?

There's a great point. Note that they define the use of a parachute during all or part of a descent as a skydive. Pretty tough to get freefall if all of your skydive is under canopy. I agree with what others have said. The SIM days nothing about freefall defining a skydive and the A license requirement says 25 jumps, not 25 freefalls. But hey, once you have 2500 does any of that really matter? Once you have 2500 it does matter if you're an instructor. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -

From the SIM, Section 3.1 E: Note that it states jumps, no reference to freefall. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -

I was thinking the same thing.. yes, you have to log freefall time, but nothing there says it has to be a minimum amount of freefall time for the jump to count. Although I do believe there's a minimum amount of freefall time required for an A license, but I could be mistaken on that point. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -

If static line jumps don't count then why are they used as a training means? Because... they DO count, I was always told that any jump counts. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -
Sorry for the lame question, what is a potato chipper? Is it too stiff?? no arch? I think I might be one of those! Basically it's no arch.. where you rock back and forth.. kinda like a potato chip... The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

At about 36 jumps I went from a Navigator 220 to a Triathlon 175, which is about the same size difference. It took me a few jumps to get dialed in on the Triathlon, the first few landings weren't exactly pretty.... I don't think it's too big of a transition, if you felt the need for the radio then it's a good idea to have it with you. Put a few more jumps on the 190 and I think you'll feel much differently about "the drastic appearance of much less fabric". The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

I'm gonna have to agree with the border collie... I've owned 2 of them and would have one now if I could. A book about studies of dog intelligence that came out a couple years ago rate the Border Collie #1, and IIRC the standard poodle was 2 or 3. However I have seen Border Collie breeders recommend against buying them as pets, due to the instinct to herd. For example they may try to herd the family cats, and the cats won't appreciate that. Mine didn't try to herd the cats, but they did tend to herd the neighborhood kids rather nicely... No, they aren't always the best breed for a pet.. they need to be kept busy. Both of mine were pets, were highly intelligent, and found ways to keep themselves occupied (if you didn't do it for them). They absolutely love to work, any work... they're definitely NOT your couch potato dog! The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Sorry, I'm not buying it... the lines would have to be tangled around the bag to keep it from opening. If the pilot chute is working properly I don't see the lines getting wrapped around the d-bag like that. A more realistic cause of bag lock would be the stows being too tight, or the bight of line being too long. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

In that case, find out what they're worth before trying to "get rid" of them... that way you can at least get a fair price. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

I had similar issues with my exits as a student.. what I found helped was to look into the plane as I exited. Since the next group out was usually a tandem I'd try to watch the vidiot climb out.. It worked for me, but as I said earlier, what works for one person may not work for the next. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Actually I found it easier to talk to others on the plane, it helped keep my mind off the door. What works for one person may not work for another... The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

On the first (and all AFF) you're not attached, but the instructors hold on to you in freefall. If you've never been skydiving, there are 2 differing views... some say to do a tandem first to see if it's something you might want to continue, others say save your money and go straight to AFF. Personally, I say do the tandem first so you have some exposure to freefall and canopy control. If you do choose the tandem first, let the instructor know beforehand that you're considering going on to AFF and he(she) is more likely to make the canopy portion more of a training jump for you rather than just a ride.
