How did you're first Hop & Pop go?
yamtx73 replied to Sletzer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Let's just say that during AFF I was a 'problem child' for my instructors (and was told once that skydiving isn't for everyone), but I stuck to it and finally got to that hop-n-pop. Poised exit... looking up at the Caravan flying away as I reached to pull (very stable too!) I had to laugh... there were so many heads stuck out the door watching that I think only the pilot didn't watch... I LOVE hop-n-pops! The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -
1.333 Wingloading with 160 jumps....
yamtx73 replied to markovwgti's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Who cares if the rigger says it's ok, what do the instructors have to say about it? Downsizing from a 170 to a 150 isn't just about a smaller canopy, it also has shorter lines and thus is much more responsive. A small 'blip' on final and you'll be eatting dirt... I'm with ZigZag on this one... Can I have $20 on markovwgti as well? The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -
Skydive Hawaii and Pacific Skydiving are both on Oahu, both at the same airfield... I haven't jumped at Skydive Hawaii, but did jump at Pacific.. I think Skydive Hawaii puts the tandems out first, at a lower altitude, but I'm not positive on this. Pacific takes tandems all the way up and puts them out after the fun jumpers... Simple answer: Ask the instructors where you jump... they know how you fly and what would be best. No, it's not the 'standard response'.. people here don't know you, haven't seen you flying a canopy. At best you would get a suggested wing loading. Your instructors and dzo know you and know your abilities.. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
yamtx73 replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think you are missing something very important here - the number of participants in each activity. No astronauts died in space last year. I suppose that makes space flight the safest activity of all. Well the faa seem to think that going to space is safe enough... virgin galactic are letting 16 people go up on a tourist visit!!!!!! The sports as safe as the person or persons you go up with, if you pack your rig badley you'll increase your chance of dying, if you hook it in from 20 ft you could die, if you don't have a cypress and lose alti awerness you could die.... blah blah blah etc etc etc The kid wants to jump, if he's carful and well trained he will be fine, it's up to his instuctors to decide whether he is capable, or mentaly ready to jump. if he's not then they should bin him. Mums are important as well, but should not rule your life, (unless your under there roof, then its tough luck/love) But i say go and have fun, thats what its about... good luck rocket boy... oh to be young again Those missing number of participants shows just how safe the sports are... you can take statistics and twist them any way you want and show that playing russain roulette is safe.. Keep in mind, ours is a sport where you can do everything right and still wind up dead. Being careful reduces the risk, but doesn't eliminate it... ever. He lives in her house, he lives by her rules it's that plain and simple. He could file for emancipation but that doesn't mean that a dz will let him jump there. To the OP, get a job and save your money.. if you can get to a dz and work as a packer while you're waiting to turn 18 that's even better... wait until you turn 18, the sky will still be there and you'll be in a better position to join it.... Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
yamtx73 replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'd love to see where you came up with the statistics to back up this statement. AFAIK skydiving is one of the most dangerous sports to participate in, a fairer comparison would be tow-in surfing where you're towed into the wave by a jetski... The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... -

I know what you mean about being docile with line twists.. I had them Saturday morning after a balloon jump and the canopy was flight straight and true while I kicked out of them... The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

I got a chance to speak with Rick Saturday night during the festivities... as this is my home DZ I was curious if he expected such a turn out... he was very pleasantly surprised to see so many people there! For myself, I was more than happy to see so many people "out in the cane fields". You can be sure they'll be better prepared (if that's possible) for the next one. All in all the entire staff did a fantastic job keeping things running smoothly. A big thanks slo goes out to all who attended for a great job of being safe, there were no injuries that I'm aware of. And a BIG hug and thanks to Peggy who kept the hungry masses fed, she was out there cooking from before dawn to well past dark! The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Well, maybe we don't all agree just how they're good That said, I want to have no trouble getting on a load at a boogie. I'm on the shy side, so having a sign-up list, or an organizer who is approachable is what I'm looking for. Maybe have different organizers, one for the hard-core point turners, and another for the loose loads, and another for the novices -- wait -- that's roughly what Skyfest has been doing . Since you're hoping to get a lot of people who don't know your DZ and don't know each other, consider what would make jumping at a new DZ enjoyable, adn make sure it's not only there, but clearly there. T-shirts with "RW organizer" or "FF organizer" or whatever, and an approachable nature. Maybe periodic announcements "if you want to be on a fun load meet by the coke machine in 10 minutes" Wendy W. Definitely cater to different groups... Turning points doesn't do anything for me, but I'm always up for a fun jump. Big ways are always good, if you have enough experience to get in on them (not me.. yet) but don't forget about the many newer jumpers who aren't ready for big ways. Having 2 or 3 organizers who are all concentrating on large groups leaves the 'youngsters' feeling left out of the fun.... The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

I meant to reply to you ... sorry it took me a while. Errr, not sure similar log books in this case is a good thing ... LOL! I like reading your post. It totally puts a smile on my face and helps me to feel better with what I'm going through. Yeah, landing and walking away safely is a great great thing for this gal! As you can see, everyone had one hurdle or another to get past... don't worry about it, relax and enjoy the ride.. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Good music, good food, good beer (if it's free it's good, right?), good jumps and good times.. what more could a person ask for? Awesome job Lisa, Rick and the rest of the staff at AirAdventures! The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

Your experience sounds VERY familiar... did you steal that from my log book? Seriously though, de-arching and spinning were serious problems I had (3 level 6 jumps, 3 level 7 jumps). I even panicked and pulled at 7500' on one jump. My problem was not relaxing and doing toe taps, my legs were uneven causing the spin. Talk to your instructors (again), and keep trying.... and try to relax (easier said than done as a student).... Yoiu landed safely and walked away, be happy with that! Skydive Miami is closest at 57 miles, AirAdventures of Clewiston is 64 miles away and Sebastian is 102 miles from Boca. I always hear people say how wonderful Sebastian is, and the view definitely is however from my own experiences the people are very cliquish. If you want the small DZ feel with the bonus of a turbine I'd definitely recommend AirAdventures. The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...

The Southwest pilots told Miami they could see the other plane and made a slight turn to avoid it. The FAA says the pilot never indicated the planes were close to a collision. The FAA said the pilot never indicated...the pilot made a turn ~ so it was a medium sized deal, if the TCAS bell rang, he's gotta fill out a report and go see the chief pilot. With "told Miami" they probably mean the aircontroller for that area. I kind of doubt it is in reference to the SDMiami dz. Isn´t there another dz closer by? If the flight in question departed RSW (Fort Myers) there are 2 dropzones closer. Skydive AirAdventures in Clewiston and Skydive SW Florida in Punta Gorda. SW Florida should have a turbine this time of year, AirAdventures has a turbine. It's highly unlikely that the pilot saw them at 17K, both operations stay below 14,500.
