Since no one else did, I'll second this. The public school system as an institution took a horrible turn somewhere down the line. Maybe it's the fault of overcrowding? Maybe it's No Child Left Behind? Maybe it's one fucking month of maternity leave for moms, maybe it's both parents in the workforce too early...Who knows when it happened. But homeschooling looks better and better. I wasn't sure if the original poster who said that about homeschooling was serious or was saying that sarcastically, but some of you know we homeschool, although not primarily for safety's sake. however, it IS a nice fringe benefit. we will NEVER have to worry about shootings or stabbings or any of that nonsense. How do you know you're not at greater risk at home from shootings & stabbings? Our children are not at risk from school shootings or stabbings, which is the topic being discussed. I didn't watch this video, but I will. And a whole new world is starting to open up to me, about large corporate farms, the inhumane treatment of animals, how we want our little hobby farm to be different, etc. For example, these two calves we have... one is ours, the other is our neighbors. He doesn't have enough land/pasture to have one, so he keeps his w/ ours and in exchange, he buys the grain over the winter months when the cows can't be purely grass fed. Well, he came over w/ this protein mix for the cows to help them grow faster... I looked at the ingredients, it has ground up pig in it. To me, that's just bad and unnatural to feed cows pig. That isn't part of their natural diet and it shouldn't be done. Also, we won't take these cows to a butcher whos doesn't follow humane practices for killing them. There is no point in making these creatures go through unnecessary pain and suffering. It's not consistent w/ our values. Now, I'm certainly no fan of PETA. To me it stands for People Eating Tasty Animals. I think the PETA folks take it too far. But I agree IN PRINCIPLE at least w/ some of their mission. Animals should'nt be abused and misused. We will certainly do our part on our farm to raise natural beef and any other live stock that respects their lives, that doesn't use growth accelerants nor introduces all sort of unnatural crap into their lives/diets, etc. We also don't believe in couping them up in small pens where they wade in their own feces for hours on end. Do you worry about your children seeing depictions of naked people in an art museum? Not in the least, if it's true art and not pornography trying to pass as art. I don't think that Mapplethorpe's photography is art and consequently, I don't subject my children and their young impressionable minds to that garbage. As I stated earlier in this thread, my kids have been to the Vatican Museum as well as other art museums that had nude statues and nude paintings within them. We also have some works of art in our house that have nudity in them. We have always been open to these things and we have always incorporated the teaching of a healthy respect and admiration for the human body, especially for those parts that have to do w/ sexuality and the generative faculties of one's body. There is a very good documentary out that chronicles the restoration of the Sistine Chapel that occurred in the late 80's I believe, under the Pontificate of John Paul II. It addresses this whole issue of nudity in art and that it really isn't anything to fear or be ashamed of. However, it IS something that should be accompanied with proper instruction for young minds and we certainly do that, at least we strive to, as I have said. In that restoration, the Pope ordered that all of the loin clothes be removed that had been added to the nude frescoes that Michelangelo painted in the Last Judgement in the apse of the Sistine Chapel. Some time after that fresco had been completed, some church official, or perhaps even a Pope who had a corn cob up his caboose ordered loin cloths painted on the genitalia of the figures because he considered them "obscene." (As if God creates anything "obscene!" ) In fact, during the painting of The Last Judgement, Michelangelo himself came under criticism by one of the Cardinals for all of the nudity in the painting (which really isn't all that much, at least by today's standards anyway) and in retaliation, Michelangelo painted Minos, the gatekeeper to Hell from Dante's Inferno w/ the face of that Cardinal w/ a snake biting that man in the genitals. When the restoration in the '80's was taking place and the loin cloths were removed, they discovered this snake, chomping on Minos (the cardinal's) wee-wee, which, to me, is quite amusing. Anyway, to make a long story short John, we don't shy away from sex, from nudity, or from art - from TRUE art, that is.
