  1. Hobby Lobby can certainly do that. They can also offer insurance that doesn't cover contraceptives or the morning after pill. What they can't do is then claim that they are meeting the ACA minimum requirements. - Dan G
  2. You pulled, you lived, it could have been worse. One thing no one else seems to have mentioned is that your break-off was probably too low. If you were planning on pulling at 4,000ft, breaking off at 5,000ft is too low. You want at least 1,500ft between break-off and pull time. I would recommend adding another 500ft to that since you're new and doing new stuff. Breaking off at 6,000 instead of 5,000 would give you about ten seconds instead of five. In that time you need to turn, track, wave off/clear airspace, reach, and pull. It's pretty unlikely you could do all that in five seconds without getting flustered, or going low. - Dan G
  3. Every over the age of 16 may not have a car, but I'm pretty sure they all have a body. - Dan G
  4. This was the hope in Afghanistan (minus the nuclear part). It's not working out as well as possible, in part due to Karzai and his lovely family. - Dan G
  5. I've seen a lot of references to this, but can't find the actual text of the law. Do you know where I might read it? - Dan G
  6. If you're refering to the "law" that prevents women from skydiving in Florida on Sunday, you should be aware that it's an urban legend. - Dan G
  7. Yes, which is one thing that makes this lawsuit more complicated. I suspect that the owners of Hobby Lobby are extending their actual religious beliefs considerably. - Dan G
  8. Well, then my new religion states that I must not pay income taxes. Will you support me against the government when they try to collect? It's not a fee for practicing your religion. It's a fee for not offering health insurance to your employees. The Bible does not prohibit large companies from providing health insurance. - Dan G
  9. You really need to bone up on your English vocabulary. Hobby Lobby has claimed that their religious sensibilities have been offended. That's the offense I was refering to. - Dan G
  10. This is not an argument in your favor. The employer has the option of avoiding this religious offense entirely. Of course, they would have to pay a fee to do so, but if their religion is so important, what's a litle fee? And in response to the argument that if employees don't like the rules set up by the employer they should work somewhere else, the opposite is also true. If the employer doesn't like the rules set up by society, they can change their business model so the rules don't apply to them. - Dan G
  11. Simmer down. You're right, I lost the bead a little. BTW, Newegg has 513 laptops for sale with Win7: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006740%20600004970&IsNodeId=1&name=Windows%207%20Professional - Dan G
  12. There's nothing in the Constitution that allows the fed to require hard hats or safety harnesses, either. Do you think the fed has the power to fine employers for breaking safety rules? - Dan G
  13. rushmc brought up unions. I don't think unions should have legal protection beyond any group of citizens. Well, it might be a 1st amendment issue, but that doesn't mean that the only way to resolve the issue is let the person claiming religious freedom do whatever they want. - Dan G
  14. So now employees have to keep abreat of the religious doctrine of the company's owners? And it's got nothing to do with not liking your employer's religion. The problem is when your employer tries to avoid government mandated employment requirements by citing their religion. There is nothing in the Constitution that gives people a free pass to shun laws based on their religion. - Dan G
  15. Can you explain how this is a 1st Amendment issue? I don't see how Congress is making any laws regarding the establishment of religion in the ACA. - Dan G
  16. I've never told you that. I think that's a bullshit rule. I don't want it both ways. - Dan G
  17. Sort of. You can wipe the hard drive of your laptop and reinstall a different OS. Of course, you will pay a lot more for that. - Dan G
  18. It's nothing like that, and you know it. The government has the right to set certain standards regarding employment. You may disagree with where the line should be drawn, but the government has decided that one of the standards is that employer provided health insurance must meet certain minimums. If the employer doesn't want to meet those minimums, then they pay a fine. It's really no different than the government saying that employers must provide safety equiment in mines or construction sites. If the employer's religion doesn't let them wear hats, do they have the right to refuse to pay for hard hats for their mine workers? - Dan G
  19. I need to start a new religion that forbits me to pay taxes. Would you support me? - Dan G
  20. I find it funny that the same people who argue that the separation of church and state is limited when it comes to posting the Ten Commendments at government buildings, and requiring prayers at public schools and meetings, argue that it is absolute when it comes to taxes and insurance requirements. - Dan G
  21. I generally by hardware and install the software I want, including OS. You can buy Win7 and install it if yu really want to avoid 8. - Dan G
  22. Really? Maybe for enterprise support, but I haven't gotten a bill yet for leaving my home PC on Win7 - Dan G
  23. Microsoft updates are free. Of course, if you want or need the newest software with the newest features, why shouldn't you pay for that? - Dan G
  24. Assuming that the healthcare system is completely static, #2 and #3 will happen regardless of whether people have to sign up for health insurance or not. In fact, they are completely independent of health insurance. #1 assumes that healthcare costs can't be reigned in. The ACA includes numerous best practices experiements on reducing healthcare costs. If any of them show promise, we might be able to reverse the skyrocketing trend of healthcare spending. - Dan G
