My first jump, me and the other two guys each wanted to be the first out (we were the same weight so the instructor left it up to us), so we did paper, scissors, rock. I won...or so I thought. When the door opened I remember thinking what a fucking idiot I was for not letting someone else go so I could see what happens before I went. At that stage I had to go through with it, but I am sure that while I faked a brave face and went through the drills methodically, my instructor was not fooled in the least. When the eyes have a wider radius than the propeller you are not fooling anyone. 3. Where to draw the line? 20 years? 50? 100? 200? When does "relevant" give way to "obsolete"? FWIW, in February 2006, the Church of England did issue a formal apology:*** In the case of the internment of the Japanese, many of the victims were still alive, and it was neccessary to allow them some sense of closure to allow them to heal and hopefully move on with thier lives. With slavery there are no former victims still alive, so an apology might be over the top. It should be acknowledged as a shamefull part of the history but a formal apology is not neccessary. 4. I am curious to see any comments on this. Apparently we owe our convicts a pay raise. http://www.ottawasun.com/News/National/2006/11/27/2515779-sun.html My default position is that we feed and clothe them so they should be greatfull for what they get but then some have argued that it makes participation in work programs more attractive. Curious to see other perspectives. What I found peculiar was the comment about using work money to but candy, cigarettes and booze. They can buy booze legally? Precisely. Most of us have been there to some extent (OK maybe not the ridiculous t-shirt) but I was pretty proud of myself first time out. I had the butterflies my first time and felt I had the right to feel good about having overcome that to pursue something I was interested in, so I did tell my family and couple of freinds. Maybe that guy went a bit far but give him a chance and he may come around. Strutting first timers don't bother me as much as guys with a couple of hundred jumps who act like they wrote the book on the sport and assume thier royal right to shit all over newbies. 6. The problem is that I see both sides to this. Yes if someone who I had an altercation with comes towards my car with a gun I am going to scram, and if that means running him over then too bad. Conversely if I am a cop trying to effect an arrest and the suspect tries too run me over I am going to unload on him without hesitation since I do not wish to get squashed. There may be more to the story. Whether or not the suspects were aware these guys were cops remains unanswered and for all we know the cops might have identified themselves before the suspect even got into his car (then again maybe not). If the suspects were truly unaware of the status of the cops then the issue of concern here should be one of procedure. The question then to ask is "How can we assure plainclothes cops effectively identify themselves to a suspect before a tragedy occurs?" There are certainly racist cops out there like in any profession but I will abstain from comment on that until I know more. Missed that one. Which thread are you referring to? 7. Is there anything other than the skin colour of the victim that suggests that this was a racially motivated shooting? Certainly the cops actions are questionable (as were the victims) and the incident merits a very close investigation. But does this mean we have to presume they were executed for "driving while black" before a thorough investigation is completed? It is premature to be jumping to polarizing conclusions. 8. What a cruel jackass. I hope his family sees that video. I would love to see him trying to explain that to his wife, mother...etc. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  9. Should someones future potential be denied due to the socieconomic circumstances they were born in? When I went to school there were people brighter than me who did not do as well because they had to also work long hours to help support thier families (not just themselves) due to low income status. As a result they had lower GPA's and subsequently have somewhat limmited opportunities with respect to grad school, or certain professional designations. I would not approve of two standards of academic requirements (barring someone giving me a compelling reason why it would make sense to do so), but this is about investing in human capital, that otherwise would go to waste. Society loses if a someone who has the potential to be a economist, engineer, medical researcher...etc ends up working on an assembly line or pushing a broom. I really don't have a problem with what they are doing. The people getting the free tuition still have to meet the same entrance standard, and have to work thier asses off to succeed in the program. Should they be doomed to a low income future because they were not as lucky as me or (presumably) you? 11. I think public opinion and the inherent public backlash do a fine job of controling what people say. It does not prohibit, but does imply consequences for those who cross the line. 12. First dropzone I started at did have some cliquishness and one of the coach/instructors was not fond of me. He was one of these guys who had everything handed to him in life and looked down on people who couldn't afford all the new guci kit and to jump non-stop (epitomised the derogatory term Skygod). Anyway when I did my self supervision test he threw in all kinds of stupid shit like checking the aircraft instruments, communications, checking the fuel and whatnot. Someone did catch wind of what he did and intervened but it was too late. While I got my self super I was not impressed. I couldn't stop wondering why the DZ owner allowed someone like that to work with students? . My impression of the place was tarnished by the fact that he was not disciplined. Switched to another DZ later that year. In fairness there were good people at the first DZ but I felt they neede to keep a tighter grip on thier instructors. 14. School....it can bring out the worst. Wait til people try sabotaging your notes or stealing them to put you at a disadvantage. Whats really irritating about people like that is they will be oh so freindly and chummy when the shoe is on the other foot. She will reap what she sows. 18. That would depend on whether or not you are a single parent. The role of parent is critical, and if say a single mother never gets to play any role in her childrens lives due to 90 hour workweeks, then I would accept her taking support (although I am a beleiver in workfare type programs that would keep the parent at some sort of task while the kids were in school). If there are two parents then work it out and split the kid time and each get jobs. 19. A little bit of forethought on the part of the Imams might have prevented this. While the airline over-reacted, these guys might have considered that all things considered discretion might have been in order .I am not saying that is right, I am just saying that sometimes you need to ask yourself if it is worth the trouble. That said, unless there is more to the story, taking them away in hancuffs, just reinforces the preachings of some of the clowns who like to preach that the west seeks to oppress muslims. The airline could have handled it better. Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  24. I admire your intent, but it will never happen in SC. Too many people like to turn this into an ego contest. Chest beating, heckling and PA's , are the favourite activity of many people who post here so in the end you will never be able to fully acheive constructive debate. Good idea though. 25. I am not sure what your problem is but the fact of the matter is that I am not the one that started trying to provoke anyone with idiotic insults. Why the fuck do people like you come on to this site to fire stupid insults at people who did not insult you. Why do people like you deliberately try to provoke fights. What the hell is wrong with people like you? I really don't care to take the time to look up breast feeding habits of 12 year olds on line nor do I care to. If that bothers you so much then don't read my posts. If you had taken the time to read my prior posts on this subject you might have seen that I was actually quite willing to discuss this and hear other viewpoints. I was supportive of public breastfeeding. I was quite vocal about the fact that if people don't like it then they should simply look the other way. Yet for some reason you attacked me for wanting to "impose my morality on others" simply because I was caught off gaurd by the idea of a 6 year old sucking on a womans tit's. If your problem is me personally, then do not debate with me but don't fucking snip at me when you clearly have not been reading my posts on the matter. I will be thrilled to ignore you, why don't you do the same.
