Funny. In your previous post you said you got a chuckle out of it. I have no idea how I inferred you took that in a lighthearted context. It is about context, eh? By and large, it's use in this forum is intended as derogatory insults. Is it okay to use racial slurs? What's the difference?

Hamas Chief: Truce With Israel Is Over
NCclimber replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Israel's been doing this since before the incursion into Lebanon. It never stopped. It only stopped being reported in the press here in the US. Have the Palestinians been continuing hostilities also? Is this unfortunate incident part of an ongoing conflict? If so, it looks quite different than an isolated act of Israeli aggression. -
$179,000 Tax per child, for over 2 per couple
NCclimber replied to Kid_Icarus's topic in Speakers Corner
That's my point. If you take immigration out the equation, there is no population growth in the US. -

Immigration. It's about people relocating, not reproducing. -

I agree. We have a social and moral obligation to maintain a stable population level in this country. What is the benefit (for Americans) of seeking to decrease our population, while the rest of the world continues to grow at an alarming rate? -

As I've already stated the total fertility rate in the US and in most industrialized countries is below the level needed to maintain a stable population. This "declining" situation is vastly different from the United States' contribution to global pollution. -

This global issue is not a domestic issue. Why are you trying to make it one? -

The total fertility rate in the US and in most industrialized countries is below the level needed to maintain a stable population. If your concern is about stemming worldwide population growth you might want to look outside the US. -
There WAS some good news for Republicans yesterday
NCclimber replied to TheAnvil's topic in Speakers Corner
Huh?? Not to my recollection...although it's been quite a while since Mom died. The state WAS involved, but did NOT inherit - again, at least not to my recollection. I think he was probably talking about cases where there are no legal heirs... which is relevant to the issue of gay marriage. -
Bill, Do you really think the OP was talking about a lighthearted use of an otherwise offensive term... instead it's frequent (derogatory) use by some of the regulars here?

You're right. Times do change. Tolerance of homosexuals has grown exponentially since the 70s and 80s. Back then, there was hardly any open tolerance of gays. Maybe in certain pockets, but generally speaking it was open season on gay bashing. Thanks for the prompt. It's good to put things in perspective.

7 out of 8 states told them to stick it up their ass. By them are you talking about proponents of gay marriage or those intolerant, bigotted, narrow-minded, uptight, fascist baaahstads? -
The ability to make connections between apparently disconnected items is a hallmark of superior human intelligence. There are those who support any irrelevant, disconnected rant, as long as it is in line with their ideology. And let's not overlook those who get pissy and start going about free speech and such, when they get called for such nonsense. It's all fun and games until someone gets their feelings hurt.

UYh weren't you guys slobbering all over the fact tha Foley had made advances to young men who were over the age limit so it was therefore legal??????? You would think that applies to the thing 20 or 30 years ago too.. Communications with former page over age of consent (Foley) != SEX with underage, current page (Studds). Of course, Studds was a Dem, so what he did in his private life was "none of our business"...right? You could always try the truly novel approach of responding to what people actually write instead of what you would have liked them to write. Unfortunately, some people tend to make disconnected rants, which makes it difficult to grasp their actual point.

It was flattened after a huge increase, one that the country has never seen in US history.... oh, that was by Clinton; he tuned it flat for Bush to turn it steeper. Nice job of talking around the question. Plain and simple, regardless of any "surpluses" we supposedly had during Clinton's tenure, the federal debt has increased every single year since 1961.

I heard several states had measures to ban gay marriage on the ballot. How'd those turn out? -
Those are some "interesting" numbers. According to your attachment, the stock market showed an annualized rate of return of 11.04% from 11/76 thru 10/80. According to my data, the Dow Jones Industrials Index was 964.90 on 11/1/76 and 924.5 on 10/31/80, showing a net loss of four per cent. Is my data wrong? Or is it your's???

The GOP needed a time out, but let's not forget history
NCclimber replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Speakers Corner
As Obama said, now there are only bad options and worse options. For that you can thank the architects of the Iraq fiasco who led us to this situation with their hubris and then refused to come to terms with reality, all the while branding any who did not agree with them as unpatriotic. It must have come as a huge shock to Bush yesterday to realize that the majority of Americans fit his conception of "unpatriotic" As I wrote some long time ago, Bush's Iraq war will have as devastating a long term effect on US foreign policy and military morale as did Vietnam. I suspect the damage Bush has done to the GOP will also take some time to heal. Who remembers the Peter Principle? This (from another thread) seemed relevant: -

Dick isn't passionate enough the sith came from 'congress' - I was actually thinking about Pelosi as the analogy (I know, Senate, not house, etc, but the set ups are funny, and she does appear to be evil. If Katherine Harris would have won, she could have been the first apprentice - the one with all the wild paint on his face......) Couldn't help but to think of a stained dress somehow... That's just wrong. -
If they're smart ........... Big "if".

Another hypocritical Republican crook resigns
NCclimber replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
To: Non sequitur? There are other logical fallacies besides the oh so popular "strawman". Very "sequitur", you just need to cast aside the US-centric blinkers That might make sense if the discussion wasn't about the US government. Actually it's about the resignation of a GOP scumbag, take a look at the title I said discussion, not OP (or thread). Can you tell the difference? Who made you the arbiter of what comes up in discussion? Are we getting testy? I'm not the guy who's trying to inhibit free and open discussion. Look in the mirror. Volunteer to be a greenie. Just don't whine if the discussion takes a turn that you don't like. Was that a YES?
