I made about 3,000 jumps without an AAD. When I purchased a new rig about 4 years ago I put a Cypres in it. I forgot to turn the damn thing on for about the first 20 jumps. And the silly thing was that I always check my three rings, main and reserve pins, slide the cutaway and reserve cable to make sure no debris is in the housings and look over the rig in general before the jumping begins. Never even thought about the AAD from never being in that HABIT for many, many leaps. So develop a good habit for your gear checks. Go over the gear with someone at the DZ with some experience, a rigger if possible. Have them show you the components and point out the priorities. You learned a good lesson. I see many WAY more experienced folks getting on planes with gear not ready to be jumped safely, like chest straps misrouted, cutaway handles hidden, etc. Don't be one of them.

I have the same dream once every few months. I throw out my PC and it just hangs in slow motion next to me. I reach back and start pulling out bridle and finally the pin. The canopy comes out really f'n slow and I hit the ground, standing up the landing. Sorry Nick, the lines aren't 500ft! The freefall seems about 30MPH during the entire dream...weird!

We had that happen here in Ontario, Calif. one night in 1986. Two guys were on final in a 182 and wrapped up in the power lines just East of the runways. One of the better rescues I was ever on. I'll try to dig up some picks. The pilot climbed out on the wing thinking he had crashed onto firm ground. He almost fell 95ft. We had to bring in 2 big cranes to get it down days later.

And I loved the ad that Sonic from the Ranch put in "Skydiving", the inflatable swoop alley! -
Another Legal Question - Neighbor McNasty
grimmie replied to kkeenan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm sure a call to his insurance company would have the fence taken down. Unless he has a very good reason for needing barbed wire, he has created a hazard to skydivers. One lawsuit by an injured jumper would be all it would take to wipe him and his insurance company out. -

I want a jump plane with SIX engines hooked up to separate fuel tanks with 3 pilots. It will hold 20 jumpers and get to 15,000ft in 3 minutes, only burning 6 gallons of JetA per load. All for a $10 jump ticket. And I want it to have parachutes in case of some sort of failure. I want FOUR parachutes on each jump with SEVEN AAD's for back up. I would like to order a "Jock Strap" airbag for hook turns and one pair of $99.95 "rocket boots." How much is the "Swooper Laser" that gets canopy tailgaters blown out of the sky? I want markers(kinda like weather ballons) at the DZ at 1,000ft and 500ft so I can always know when to start my hook turn. And I only want to be on loads with everyone that has "Mad Skillz". And a cool looking fireproof jumpsuit. -
Forget the lawyer. It's time for a "boating accident"...

A few of us have discussed a huge boogie in Cuba when Fidel goes cigar up! Maybe Obama will let us all go next year! The Bahamas would be a great location also. C'mon you guys! Where would you like to go for a boogie???

What classic movies have you watched recently on TV?
grimmie replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
I was watching "Apollo 13" the other night on AMC. The people running tv should be shot. Right during re entry(yes I know how it ends!) in the lower one third of the screen come up a huge ad for "Mad Men", some new series. WTF! During entire movies they pop that shit up on the screen. And why can't I watch the news without streaming bullshit flowing across the bottom of my screen? Or a sporting event without some lame ass new show being touted across the picture? Rant over, carry on... -
OK kids. "Boogie in Belize V" is coming up next February. We will only have the LZ for a few more years due to construction, so... I'm looking into other locations to host a boogie. I have a few good ideas in mind but would like your input. Where on Earth would you love to attend a boogie, or see a full time DZ located? Proceed...

How ridiculous is the euphemism "African-American"
grimmie replied to birdlike's topic in Speakers Corner
As long as CNN, Fox News and the rest of the media keep putting humans in "categories", it will be impossible for Americans to stop giving a rat's ass where someone is from or what color their skin is. And just for the record, Gary Beyer is my favorite "African-American". -
And for years everyone has told me how wonderful the Canadian education system is!

Bob Beamon, amazing leap. Olga Korbut, put women's gymnastics on the map and warmed the Cold War. Jim Craig, once in a lifetime tourney for a goalie. Eddie the Eagle, name one other '88 winter olympian. Valeri Borzov, crushed the 100m and 200m sprints in '72 Alberto Juantoreno, crushed the 400, 800m. Teofilo Stevenson, the best heavyweight boxer of all time olympic history.

You lived and learned, good job. A couple of pointers. 1. Everyone should be quiet and let the organizer figure out exit order, flight path and exit spot. It sounds like the organizer should have taken better command of the situation. And the jumpers should have let him AND helped him do his job. 2. You were open really high. The best LZ may not always be on your effort to make it back to the DZ. Look behind you for a good LZ and use the wind as your friend. 3. A $27 jump ticket is cheaper than a trip to the ER. 4. Peer pressure doesn't buy food and pay medical bills. Get well soon!
