you can underload a canopy so much so that it will not get good penetration into the wind. I am 150lb and my first jump was on a manta 288...that sucka barely moved forward in a headwind for me So? My exit weight was less than 150 lbs, and I did 50 jumps on manta 288/skymaster 280. It really was no big deal, I didn't die, I don't think I landed out in those first 50 jumps either. That was on a whopping .48-ish wingload. Now the first time I ever landed backwards, and the only time, was with a wingload of 1.7 ciel bleu, Saskia

If you do a search about costumer service on these 3 companies, you're going to find them in this order: L&B/Altimaster . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Parasport Italia. just sayin'... ciel bleu, Saskia

Student canopies are generally set so they are impossible to stall. Taking a couple wraps negates this. If you stall the canopy on landing, you can break yourself. Plus, if you have wraps around your hands, how are you going to let go if you want to perform a cutaway? If you have trouble landing, ask your instructors how you can improve. Get video of your landings, and find someone to critique them. Sliding in on your butt is quite dangerous BTW. You should be doing a PLF if you cannot get the timing right just yet. But do not land on your butt as you can damage your spine that way. Always land on your feet. Again, ask your instructors for feedback. Sounds like you really need it. ciel bleu, Saskia

You may have put the battery in upside down. Try reversing it or RTM to check how it should go. You may have an empty battery and/or held the battery between your fingers for a while before inserting it. Try a new battery. ciel bleu, Saskia

Why? Ive only done a couple nightjumps, we were required to have a small flashlight so you can check your canopy. After that, turn off light. You don't want to ruin anyone's nightvision and you do not want to attach anything to your canopy/risers/bag/bridle/.... Aside from the small flashlight for your canopy check, just get a couple big chemlights. Make sure you tape those up until right before exit. Get a small chemlight for your alti, again taped off on one side, or get an alti that has a backlight itself + new battery. There, all done. ciel bleu, Saskia

How many feet would you have to fall to reach 120mph?

I'm not a guy, and the answer according to Leverage (which is a Action | Comedy | Crime | Drama | Mystery show) was that 1) DB Cooper was already dead by the time of the robbery, it was the name of an army buddy and 2) the robber became the FBI investigator's partner plus he hooked up with the stewardess. Like I said, this is a fictional show so no need to take any of this serious at all ciel bleu, Saskia

Don't know what you guys are all so worked up about, it can't be that much of a mystery since in last weeks episode of Leverage they figured out who DB Cooper was in 45 minutes ciel bleu, Saskia

Your question is kinda broad. I'm presuming here you are wanting to edit tandemvideos in a quickish manner. CPU: get a recent intel i7 or quad (!) i5. Some of the AMDs like x6 or x8 might work as well but I'm not that familiar with them. RAM: more = good. I have 16GB RAM in mine, these days you can get mobos with 32GB option as well. RAM is cheap these days too. Graphics card: if you are going to use Premiere Pro, get a Nvidia CUDA card. No idea about other video editing software, some do not care about the GPU at all. Firewire port: you only need this if you are going to edit from tape cameras. Modern (skydiving) cameras do not have firewire anymore, rather you input through USB or a cardreader. I'd use windows 7 as OS. Linux limits you severely when editing video, at least AFAIK there is no pro or semi-pro video editing suite for linux. might be wrong there, but I've never heard of any DZ using linux for editing at all. HDD: I'd get a 120GB-256GB SSD for the OS. This will not help you do the editing any faster but it does make your pc run smooth as butter. Get an separate biggish HDD (7200 rpm) for the video footage. ciel bleu, Saskia

This should be in the camera forum. That said, does the photographer get paid? Good quality photographs are shot by good quality freefall photographers, who have invested a lot of jumps, money and time to get where they are. Getting credits is perhaps "nice" for a beginner, and will likely net you beginner type photographs only, if any. ciel bleu, Saskia

Katana 150 or Stiletto 150; 1.4 wing loading

Katana 150 or Stiletto 150; 1.4 wing loading
dragon2 replied to martwald's topic in Gear and Rigging
With 200 jumps, you shouldn't be on a springo (of any size)... Hint, over here you need 400 jumps to jump a springo. Whoever sold you that canopy at 100 jumps was not your friend. Let alone a crossfire/katana type canopy. That would be plain stupid at 200 jumps. As is a wingloading of 1.4 IMO. My advice would be to stick with the springo 160 for another 200 jumps, or better yet, get a sabre2 170 that might please you more than the springo. And get some canopy coaching. No way are you maxing out that canopy yet. ciel bleu, Saskia -
Don't forget "weight". Over here it seems that cute lightweight-ish girls with at least 50-100 jumps and reasonably current stand the best change of hitching a ride ciel bleu, Saskia

I found my smart 120 easier to land than the PD126R I have number of jumps on (as a main). The smart seemed to open slower (was a low-speed malfunction). I liked both reserves, they're both better than other brands I've jumped. You cannot go wrong with either one IMO. ciel bleu, Saskia

Nope. MS only for the first couple CX cameras. ciel bleu, Saskia

quick release mounting plate on curved helmet?
dragon2 replied to 5.samadhi's topic in Photography and Video
what should I look out for - ie what are the safety issues? -exit timing They might not got their exit timing straight yet. Don't leave at the same time as (one of) them. If they re out of synce, just leave after them (peel) to avoid hitting them especially if they funnel the exit, keep an eye out for anything flapping. I do not get over the center on a jump when i don't like the gear anymore. -freefall sliding A newbie team generally slides a hell of a lot in freefall, in all directions. Be careful they do not slide under you, use you wings (and booties) if they do. Especially if the team does not have coaching and tries blocks -separation I always keep an eye on and thus film the worst tracker. Make sure everyone's track is at least decent and not too short or steep. If they are funneling or otherwise having trouble around separation time, you might want to pull a little bit higher. Really, a A or AA team is sooo much easier to film than rookies. First time I did, I was like, Hey,this is EASY! ciel bleu, Saskia -

I know a couple jumpers who use it for spotting. Be it for a demo jump, an overcast day or simply sitting away from the door with the last tandem, keeping an eye on the spot is easier that way. I don't think anyone of these actually uses the gps under canopy, except the CRW jumpers (often they jump from 12k here). After the jump, wingsuiters can read out the gps track, seems to be common these days. Anyway, I don't think there is any reason to fear jumpers using the GPS as a navigation aid under canopy in a regular jumprun. ciel bleu, Saskia

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/Foretrex301_OwnersManual.pdf See page 15 and down. You can select a 1, 2, 3 or 4 field layout. You could set elevation, next distance and bearing (I think that's what people are using for spotting) and lots of other options. ciel bleu, Saskia

You can have multiple "screens" on the foretrex, see attached ciel bleu, Saskia

I don't hink so. A colleague (not skydiving0 promised my I could jump his, but haven't yet due to the holidays. A couple jumpers here jump garmin foretrex 401, this can do both at the same time (and more). ciel bleu, Saskia

What you're looking for is something like this or this. ciel bleu, Saskia -
Any NAS by Synology is a good buy. that said, I just switched to a micro server and couldn't be happier. I bought a HP ProLiant Microserver N40L. I put in the discs from my synology and sitecom nas and sold those 2 nasses. I still have a 4bay iomega nas but I find I now use my homeserver for everything. I remote desktop to it from everywhere, use it as a backup and download server, and use it to practice a bit for work (I installed windows server 2008 r2 on it). I stuck in an extra 2gb RAM from my pc, you do not need to buy server RAM. This homeserver was cheaper than my iomega nas and is much more versatile
