Is skydiving becoming more popular?
Levin replied to Smeger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
yah, it's definetly better but it's still not pre-9/11. there still does not seem to be as many experienced jumpers jumping alot on a regular basis as there use to be. or at least it doesn't seem to me. -
i posted this in another thread before i noticed this one. BRITS17 IS CLAIMING 1000 JUMPS AND HAS NOT BEEN PIED YET she's had 1000 jumps on her profile for months but has never said anything. since she has tried to elude the tradition, she is due a pieing of the worst degree.

Is skydiving becoming more popular?
Levin replied to Smeger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think it's become less popular of a sport due to the economy. I think it's become more popular as a one time carnival ride. -
edit: off topic post moved to more appropriate pieing thread

Eric Butts told me that the Firebolt is modeled after the Cobalt. He's a test jumper for Atair and stays in contact with Jump Shack. All of his containers are Racers.

The Texas CPC consists of 5 meets featuring the tradition events of speed, distance and zone accuracy. At the end of season the top 5 overall canopy pilots from each district are invited to the CPC National Championships. First place at the CPC National Championships automatically becomes ‘Pro’ certified in the PST. Places 2 – 10 will be eligible to take the Pro Qualification Test. Beginning in 2006 the advanced class will be eliminated from the Pro Swooping Tour and all pilots wishing to join the PST will have to do so by qualifying in their local CPC district. Texas CPC district competitions will be held at various Dropzones and other suitable locations. In an effort to promote the sport of high performance canopy piloting, when appropriate and possible, competitions will be held in suitable locations other than Dropzones where the public may be invited. To register and compete competitors must have at least 500 jumps which must include 200 high performance landings in total and a minimum of 100 high performance landings within the previous 12 months of which 50 jumps must be on their current canopy. The CPC defines a high performance landing as “Any pilot who initiates any type of input or turn to gain extra speed for landing is making a high performance landing”. Competitions held in a location other than a Dropzone will require the competitor to be a member of USPA and posses a USPA ‘D’ license. In order to be eligible for score tallying at the end of the season and a chance to go to the CPC National Championships competitors must compete in 4/5 meets and be a member of the Canopy Piloting Circuit. CPC membership is $50 annually. Competition registration for each meet is $50 for CPC members and $75 for non-CPC members. An objective of the CPC is to provide a controlled flight arena for canopy pilots to fine tune existing skills and gain competition experience. There will be a Zero Tolerance policy for those deemed to posses the wrong attitude, commit safety violations and/or create a dangerous element in a controlled flight arena. It is the responsibility of the competitor to read and understand the rules prior to competition. All rules will be strictly enforced. CPC Rules can be found on the Rules page at www.canopypiloting.com/cpc.htm. Please read the homepage, rules, news and Texas circuit page. If you have any questions or would like a word.doc of the rules email me at extremepilotfx74@hotmail.com. The 2005 Texas CPC schedule is as follows… Meet #1 - Skydive Houston – May 15 Meet #2 - Skydive Aggieland – June 5 Meet #3 - Skydive Dallas – June 26 Meet #4 - Skydive Spaceland – August 21 Meet #5 - Lake Gladewater – September 25 [Alternate / Bad Weather] – October 2 [Alternate / Bad Weather] - October 9 Keep checking back to www.canopypiloting.com/cpc.htm for more information to come…

FAR's and wingsuit landing w/o a parachute?
Levin replied to linestretch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i disagree. the pilot would fall under the jurisdiction of the faa and would lose his license and be subject to fines. the jumper would fall under the jurisdiction of the local sherriff's department and would be eligible for involuntary manslaughter charges. -
Highest number of jumps prior to FIRST reserve ride?
Levin replied to skydiverek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i don't remember what his malfunctions were. that would be my first guess. 75% of the rigs on that dz are racers. -

Don King, a former pilot at Skydive East Texas, has 2300 jumps with 2 reserve rides and no cut-aways. -
Highest number of jumps prior to FIRST reserve ride?
Levin replied to skydiverek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i was trying to make it to a thousand without a cut-away. i had my first just before my 700th jump and my 2nd 10 days later. haven't a reserve ride since. -
if it did, it doesn't anymore.

the preview for mythbusters next wednesday looks pretty good. they are gonna compleatly fill a cement truck with dynamite. they showed the explosion on the preview. the cement truck was gone.
-
according to the USPA website the next competition manual will be out in May.
-
i assume your figuring operating cost per slot. i think you should be figuring full cost per slot because if a tandem instructor/student isn't taking the slot then a fun jumper paying full price will.

Skydive Houston usually averages 20+ tandems a day. I've seen Skydive Spaceland do 40 - 60 tandems a day on several occasions. I've seen Skydive San Marcos and Skydive Chicago both do alot more than that in one day. edit: typo's

maybe 10 minutes on my head. I've only got about 20 minutes or less total. that's the only tunnel i've been in. i flew in it a couple of times last year for about 5 minutes each time. this was the first time back in since last fall. the picture was taken after about 5 minutes in it of which 1 minute was on my head. my sit fly is marginal and my belly flying is embarresing, but i'm solid on my head. therefore headdown is my safety position which isn't very safe in a tunnel. that's why he's holding on to me with a lite grip. i'm afraid if i flew into the wall i'd fall down and hurt my neck. also afraid when i fell of my head afterwards the air would blow me up towards the top and into the wall. the air in the tunnel is blowing 145mph. no exaggeration. whatever they did to that thing has got it blowing hard. but on the downside the air is choppier when cranked up that high. i'm thinking another 10 - 20 minutes and i'll be able to stay in one place without any assitance.
-
i'm always honored to get stuck in the base. if you don't have a good base you probably won't have a productive jump.
-
true, but they are directly related to your level of awarenesss. especially large numbers of jumps accumulated in short periods of time. imo, it's awareness that gives you the ability to recognize and control your skydive.
-
pointless dishonesty. you can forge jump numbers but you can't forge experience. if you have 26 jumps people will think you are inexperienced. if you have 26 jumps experience and claim to have 200 jumps people will think you suck. the only way to lie about your jump numbers and get away with it is to already have the experience and/or skills to cover for the lie. once you have those skills what's the point in lieing.

and a few more pics...

here's some pics from the tunnel saturday. the tunnel has just been upgraded. the max airspeed is now 145mph. on the downside it seems like the air is a little choppier at max speed. but freeflying is definetly doable even for larger people. the tunnel is located at 8 and Cullen near 8 & 288 on the outside feeder road at the new MLK intersection. Easy to find. Skydiver rates are only $5 a minute. But I believe you must buy a minimum 10 minutes to get that price. And you don't have to use all your time at once.

200 canopies x $2500 = $500,000 was your guestimate just for the US? there's a whole rest of the world out there. i'm sure australia and europe together match the US market. seems profitable to me.
