Levin in a bulldozer Brit standing on stilts Where's Brit?

not necessarily so. take skydive east texas for example. it's a really fun king air dropzone that i recomend everyone visit if they get the chance. but i certainly wouldn't want to chop a canopy up high. the link is for a picture of the landing area. and this is just an example. i know people who have lost canopies at skydive chicago, sports city skydiving in shreveport (former dz), skydive east texas, skydive houston and skydive spaceland. most of those canopies could have been saved if it had been possible to have caught them in the air. but in each of those particular scenarios, it wasn't possible. http://www.skydiveeasttexas.com/about.htm bsr's are good general rules of thumb to keep everyone safe. the fact that you perceive them as law is a really good thing. as long as people abide by them as if they were law then everyone stays pretty much safe. but they are not law. this taken from the swoop forum. what you said was...

you may want to consider a spectre or triathlon for learning the basics of crw and canopy flight. then later on move on to a more crw specific wing. i imagine there are more spectres and triathlons floating around than lightnings and prodigys. just a thought.

I know this isn't what you asked but I'm throin' at ya anyway. You're goal on every ball jump is to catch the ball before you deploy. Otherwise you are endangering any people and/or animals on the ground that may be under the balls path. If the ball impacts concrete then you are endandering anyone or anything with a 50 yard radius of the point of impact. If you have a ball that falls 120mph and you have sunk out or floated above the ball at the retrieving ailtitude then you will have to arch or de-arch like hell to be able to catch it in time before you have to deploy. If you have a ball that falls 180mph you have even less time to retrieve it. If you sink out (not likely) then you will have to float a little to get it. If you float above it (likely) then you are going to have to dive to catch it. To catch a 180mph ball you may have to increase your speed to 200mph to quickly catch it. When travelling at that speed it is very difficult to get your arms out in front of you to grab it. 180 - 200mph is a very sensitive speed for minor movements. You may actually float above it by simply just trying to grab it. Consider this before making a ball jump. If you fail to retrieve a ball and it kills somebody on the ground 1. you are eligible for manslaughter charges 2. the dz will be sued 3. the pilot will lose his license 4. the FAA will specifically ban spaceballs and 5. lots of freeflyers will be pissed. Perhaps you should consider narrowing your search to information on how much weight to make a spaceball that falls between 145 - 165mph. When making your ball the brand of ball, the number on the outside and the size of your lead shot will determine how much weight you can put in it. Depending on where you jump and if your DZO allows spaceballs, I will PM you the correct instructions on how to make one so that you will not have to experiment. My ball falls 154mph. Good luck and be safe.

and there ya go. this person couldn't catch a main with a tractor beam much less his feet. by the time he can he'll have a clue. your argument is a valid one but doesn't hold water in this forum. there are 2 types of best canopy pilots. CReW Dogs and HP Canopy Pilots. I imagine you are reffering to the latter. The best HP canopy pilots are very experienced & knowledgeable & damn good at what they do. But the other best canopy pilots such as the ones in this forum have been the best before the idea of a HP canopy was even conceived of. And it seems to me opinions are mixed. Things aren't so black and white. There's always grey area. whaddya mean outlawed? bsr's are not law. i stand corrected. you didn't say banned. you said they should be removed from circulation. maybe we should have a disclaimer sticky up top that says "Kids, DON'T try this at home" Can I quote you on that?

www.txsl.com dates aren't usually announced until early in the year. it started in June this year. probably around the same time next year. how's that king air working out?

sweeet!! that's a photo finish or cover shot. very cool pic. edit: edit to add the others are really cool too.

and he was flying a Velocity 96 when he caught it. not your typical crw wing. i don't think catching cut-away mains is a good idea either. in this single particular forum what you are saying is kinda like comparing apples with oranges. you seem to want to outlaw a lot of things such as all F111 canopies and low pull competitions. i think that someday with time and some more jumps you will realize that your own personal experience level isn't the standard by which all should be judged. i prefer the idea of to each his own. there is a time, place and situation for everything. i don't like the idea of highly loaded reserves, but i don't go around advocating the banning of all highly loaded reserves. some people choose to jump them and they have that right. who am i to tell someone they can't do that simply because i don't appove. same goes for you. edit: edit to add that you asked TVPB to edit his post knowing that is impossible because he made it 4 months prior to you dragging it back up. his tips were intended for CRW jumpers only. I find his tips informative for the targeted audience.

i'd say between 100' - 1000'. I think it mostly depends on the pack job. You can slow the opening down with a smaller pilot chute or speed it up with a smaller slider or by pulling headdown.

What can we do about Skyride?
Levin replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I guess I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that without a waiver an injured jumper can sue the DZ, tandem instructor, gear manufacturer and anyone else directly involved with the jump. Including SkyRide since they selected the DZ and booked and sold the reservation. How is SkyRide exempt without a waiver? They are the ones receiving the money from the tandem student. You can't sign a waiver over the phone or internet. -

Simply "time" alone may get rid of this problem. If SkyRide sells a tandem and the tandem gets injured then the DZ is protected by the waiver. Skyride isn't. They are also liable and do not have protection under a waiver. -

I may be mistaken but if a company is ripping people off accross state lines (alabama, georgia, wherever) then that is a federal offense and falls within the jurisdiction of the FBI. The have divisions for everything. Tell them SkyRide is terrorizing the skydiving industry and they might all get involved. The FBI may be the way to go. As well as a call to CNN to see if they are interested in the story. -

HELP ON CANOPY CONTROL-MY LANDINGS SUCK
Levin replied to VampireGirl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I remember sveral years back there was/is a treatment that you can do to F111 fabric that will give it back much of it's porosity. Anybody know anything about this? Also I was also just thinking about the idea to get a used cheap ZP canopy. That would only set her back $300-$400. That is also assuming that a ZP canopy the same size will fi in her rig. If not she'll have to get another rig all together and that could set her back about $2000. I still think she should check her brake settings and maybe look into whatever that treatment is that you can give F111 to get the porosity back before considering getting another canopy. -
San Antonio is my favorite city in Texas. You should go. You'll like it. As for August, everywhere in Texas is hot.

For those that haven't heard the next L1 tunnel will open at Memorial City Mall in Houston, TX next summer. I can't wait.

HELP ON CANOPY CONTROL-MY LANDINGS SUCK
Levin replied to VampireGirl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
you have a good point, but that is assuming the problem is in fact the canopy and not the brake settings or her. At that wingloading she should be able to flare and land the canopy no matter how used up it is. A canopy like hers but one size larger and she probably wouldn't need to flare it to stand up the landing -
