I don’t like the holidays, but I do like traditional holiday food. Not because the food is good for me. It seems like it’s all starch on a plate. I just like traditional food on traditional days. I can do without the family get togethers though. This year a friend is flying in to attend the CSS Thanksgiving Boogie with me. The friend doesn’t like traditional Thanksgiving fare. It means more to me to have my friend there than having the traditional food. So….. Casablanca Couscous – originally a vegan recipe, but since my friend is a carnivore, I’ll substitute chicken for the tofu. Other ingredients include onion, carrots, celery, mushrooms, chickpeas, tomato sauce, spices, wine, pecans and raisins… served over couscous… I’ll also make some green bean stir-fry that has a sauce made from soy sauce, garlic, toasted sesame seeds, brown sugar and peanut butter. My son was able to control his asthma without inhalers by using a homeopathic "asthma tincture" that was prescribed by a homeopathic medical doctor. Yeah, getting old is not for sissies. My Dad spent ten years in an Alzheimers unit in a nursing home. At the end he was in diapers and couldn't figure out how to work a doorknob, but his body was fully functional. I'd think it would be torture for my body not to work, be totally dependent on others to tend to basic bodily functions, and realize what was going on. My Mom went that way. She had a stroke and spent two days on the floor before she was found. Fortunately, she didn't linger... Both options suck. I visited the Alzheimers unit a lot. Those people aren't happy even though they are clueless about most things. It's a good thing it's not up to me to decide. I couldn't choose. You wrote a thread about a woman who you were happy with as a babysitter until you heard a second-hand story about an incident with the police and subsequently the woman's past sexual abuse as a child. Your conclusion is that the incident was domestic violence and the cause and effect of her instability was the sexual abuse. You are concerned that the woman has the desire to sexually abuse your children. My reading of your third-hand account is that the police being called was probably not domestic violence on her part since the police would have arrested her if it were. I don’t believe that the police would be swayed by the woman’s tears. My guess would be that the police were called because of an argument between the husband and wife. She could have been acting unstable because of alcohol or a chemical imbalance (manic-depression). But I don’t know what really happened. I wouldn’t assume that it was domestic violence from what you wrote. I wouldn’t excuse her domestic violence if it were. Our conclusions are just different. You are absolutely correct in not hiring someone to watch your children who you have doubts about. That’s just being a good parent. It’s just unfortunate that you are promoting the stereotype that sexually-abused children become pedophiles as adults. ***Edit to add: I am truly very sorry to hear that you were a victim of this stuff as a child. Apparently she went on to tell my friend that many of her mental challenges stem from being raised in a 'sex cult' as a child.
