  1. On the one hand we have the US with lots of guns and massive incarceration sanctions. Then we have the UK. Few guns, lax sanctions. NYT "GRANTHAM, England — Daniela Espirito Santo died after waiting on hold for the police to answer her call for help. It was the seventh time in a year that she had reported her boyfriend to the police, including for death threats and for trying to strangle her. Two of those calls came in the hours before her death. The first was in the morning, after her boyfriend pinned her on the bed and pressed his forearm against her throat. “Is this it?” Ms. Espirito Santo, 23, had gasped, according to a police report. “Are you going to kill me this time?” The police took him into custody but quickly released him. He returned to Ms. Espirito Santo’s apartment and soon afterward she called the police to report that he had assaulted her again. The dispatcher told her that her situation wasn’t urgent, because the boyfriend had left. He directed her to a nonemergency hotline and hung up after 94 seconds. Just over an hour later, Ms. Espirito Santo was pronounced dead; the cause was heart failure. She never spoke to the nonemergency dispatcher. Her call stayed on hold for eight minutes, and when the dispatcher picked up, the only sounds were the cries of her 7-month-old. The police later found her slumped on her sofa, not breathing, her distraught baby cradled limply in one arm.... it also illustrates another flaw in British authorities’ efforts to address violence against women: the repeated failure of prosecutors to punish abusers. Initially charged with manslaughter, the boyfriend, Julio Jesus, then 30, was eventually sentenced to only 10 months behind bars." So he'll serve five months and be on parole for five months and thats it.

  3. There are no winners when crime is involved except perhaps white collar when the perpetrator gets away with the crime. I see no evidence of any high horse. Just an opinion to which we agree to disagree.
  4. Clear but disappointing given your previous history of having a open, flexible mind with regards to science and facts.
  5. This is the name of the new and latest UN climate report. "The report, approved by 195 governments and based on more than 14,000 studies, is the most comprehensive summary to date of the physical science of climate change." I'm sure that Rupert Murdoch will have his FOX and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, stooges denying it all.But the science of more than 14,000 scientific studies can't be ignored. Expected global GDP impact by 2050 under different scenarios compared to a world without climate change: -18% if no mitigating actions are taken (3.2°C increase); -14% if some mitigating actions are taken (2.6°C increase); -11% if further mitigating actions are taken (2°C increase); -4% if Paris Agreement targets are met (below 2°C increase) I hope governments and people get on board with fighting climate change. But i doubt actions will mitigate under 2.5 degrees increase.
  6. Many studies done on these issues both in the US and elsewhere. Many law abiding pro-gun owners think harsher sentencing is the answer. Make the use of guns so punitive that they would use other weapons. "THE IMPACT OF INCARCERATION ON THE RISK OF VIOLENT RECIDIVISM" "Yet rigorous empirical studies on the nature of the incarceration—recidivism link are limited. As a whole, existing research suggests that the effect of imprisonment, relative to non-custodial sanctions, is either null or slightly criminogenic. These findings call into question the ability of prisons to exert a specific deterrent effect."

    covid-19

DeSantis’s reelection campaign has introduced T-shirts with the new classic "“How the hell am I going to be able to drink a beer with a mask on?” Plus the new standby “Don’t Fauci My Florida” Common sense in Florida would require a Judge Dredd order.

    covid-19

That would be China, not the US. Due to the transmissibility of the Delta variant experts have suggested that 90% of the population is now required to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. US new doses are at just under 700k per day. Which means herd immunity for the US(90%) will occur March 21, 2022. At which time its anticipated that both Florida and Louisiana will be absent GOP voters due to mortality.
  9. When BIGUN imagines crimes against his family he tends to lose it a bit.
  10. Japan "The man alleged to have wounded 10 people in a knife attack on a Tokyo commuter train late on Friday told police he became incensed when he saw women who "looked happy" and wanted to kill them, Japanese media reported on Saturday." In the US with the ready availability of guns there would have been at least 10 dead. "The Sankei newspaper reported that suspect told police: "I began feeling like I wanted to kill women who looked happy about six years ago. Anyone was fine, I just wanted to kill a lot of people."
  11. I'm surprised to see a guest editorial in Forbes be so far off base. IMO Forbes in generally very credible. As far as coal prices in China, too bad, once again Brent fails to see past misinformation and personal bias. "China’s coal-fired power generators have seen profits evaporate amid surging domestic prices, with imports unable to provide much relief amid an ongoing unofficial ban on buying cargoes from major exporter Australia. Out of 10 listed coal-fired power companies, four reported losses and five others saw first-half profits plunge, according to a report on Chinese energy industry website BJX News on July 27. The only utility to post a rise in profits was Changyuan Electric, which benefited from its large portfolio of renewable energy, according to Refinitiv analyst Yan Qin. The dramatic drop in profitability comes amid a surge in domestic thermal coal prices, with SteelHome data showing the benchmark price at Qinhuangdao in northern China ending at 1,009 yuan ($155.47) a tonne on Wednesday."
  12. Technically they are all the same are they not? The problem with very harsh sentencing is that they attempt to use logic on people that are not deterred by it. Somewhere up the supply chain of the weapons would likely be deterred if certainty of prison was given. I like the rest of your thinking.
  13. Yet this thread goes on and on. Reminiscent of some climate change denial threads.
  14. Rome had a little dictator and their senate dealt with him properly. America just got rid of their Caesar in the ballot box. Just too bad the US senate wasn't as vigorous as Rome's. But I digress. Most of the worlds democracies are now turning away from populists and dictators. China, Russia, N. Korea the exceptions.
  15. Well if it was "pussy grabbing" or something even more outrageous they would. Instead Cuomo faces calls for resignation from powerful Democrats in wake of AG report even five months ago democrats took the higher ground for behavior. Ex president trump will soon call the democrats and Cuomo weak for arguing over such trivial conduct.
  16. Agree The authority to prohibit the protestors access to the mayors house did not exist for the armed idiot lawyers. Thats why they PLEAD GUILTY. Why they paid fines and agreed to forfeit their weapons. Now an idiot governor has gifted them with pardons. Lawyer-politicians in America, truly the entitled ones.
  17. They leave stupid up to the GOP, Darwin's theory and evolution.
  18. Because tax breaks are for the wealthy. Social programs for the little guy.
  19. Ssssshush. Canada has a good thing going. Cherry picking the best most well educated and monied immigrants using its points system. It doesn't need the US elbowing into that sweet setup. The GOP has it right.
  20. Don't listen to carnival barkers?
  21. Wrong again. Most US debt is held domestically Who Owns the US National Debt?
  22. I'd agree allot of hoopla over not much. However it does generate more interest in "space". Personally if the flight doesn't reach orbit it isn't space and doesn't qualify you as being an astronaut. Just my opinion. SpaceX seems to be doing more than all the national space agencies put together. Perhaps they will have orbital flights for tourists soon. All in all, why not. It sees similar to a tandem student first jump.
  23. "I wish I was wrong." Well you are. Debt per taxpayer is currently $227k per the debt clock. "50 percent of federal revenue comes from individual income taxes, 7 percent from corporate income taxes, and another 36 percent from payroll taxes that fund social insurance programs " "Conclusion The current tax code raises low levels of federal revenues from corporate income taxes, thus contributing to the growing national debt. However, there are opportunities for tax reforms that can help make our nation’s fiscal outlook more sustainable."
  24. The "Lord" recognizes those who have chosen Lucifer over his way. trump is nothing but a test for conservative Christians. One in which they have failed and now many millennia will have to pass before he provides guidance in person again. He teaches "Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil." "But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness." "Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly."

That would be your GOP membership card, a receipt for donation to MAGA or other such "proof of stupidity".
