Is your pilot chute trying to tell you something?
airathanas replied to NWFlyer's topic in Gear and Rigging
I just replaced my pilot chute this weekend. When I was packing it, I noticed a nickel-sized hole in it. Further inspection revealed that there was lots of wear and tear around the handle as well. I was faced with the decision of jumping and fixing it at the end of the day, or bumping off the load and getting it fixed right then and there. I bumped. When I got the rig, the pilot chute had a hole in it, which was then patched. The patch lasted for 200-300 jumps, but I had no idea how many jumps were on the pilot chute itself. I feel that I made the right decision. Glad you're ok NWFlyer! -

I've had some great mentors over the years, and I am very open minded. I am also a young instructor and I fully realize that I still have a lot to learn. I feel that reading incident reports is a good way to gain knowledge too. http://3ringnecklace.com/ -
I can see how you would feel guilty about not being there to help this jumper out, but feeling guilty about it is a good thing! It means you care. I also agree with the above posters that it was HIS responsibility on knowing how to pack properly and to fix a fixable minor malfunction. However, and thankfully, he performed his EPs properly and has lived to tell the tale. http://3ringnecklace.com/

Good luck! Trust your instructors and trust yourself!

I worked at a dropzone that attached the goggles to the back of the harness, but the student could never see them. They constantly asked, "Do I get goggles?" I would respond, "Did you pay the goggle fee?" They would usually say, "Goggle fee? What goggle fee?" Then I'd say, "If you want to use goggles, then you have to pay the goggle fee." Before they would get anymore flustered, I'd tell them that they have goggles. When the student would ask before taking off in a Cessna, "Are we going to get attached together?" I would say, "Now you want to be attached together BEFORE we leave the plane? Wow you want everything! I bet you want the parachute deployed too, huh?" They usually laugh, and then I'd explain when we would get hooked up before exiting the plane. Silly whuffos! http://3ringnecklace.com/

Is it just me, or did anyone else think to themselves, "If you can afford to horseback ride, why can't you afford to skydive?" I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just curious. Maybe the reason was already posted and I didn't read it... http://3ringnecklace.com/

Yeah it was pretty amusing watching her cry on the news this morning. What a spoil brat. Maybe she'll learn from it and clean her act up- or write a book about it and make tons of money. http://3ringnecklace.com/

My Viso that was mounted to my mud flap chest mount flew apart in freefall. I looked down to see what the altitude was and all that was there was a piece of plastic! I also lost a handkerchief off of my head once when I stuck my head out of the door to spot. Oops! http://3ringnecklace.com/

Why Do You Skydive? (Psychology)
airathanas replied to DHolland's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I skydive because it is an incredibly empowering experience. That, and antiquing and wine tasting just don't do it for me. http://3ringnecklace.com/ -

Tax and Damage on my new rig : (
airathanas replied to aeroflyer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I ordered a weight belt from dz.com and it never arrived (yes it was shipped- the shipper sent me a copy of the receipt). That was through USPS Priority (you don't get a tracking number when you don't ship it online). I just received a Body Bugg (electronic device you wear on your arm that counts the calories that you burn). It was shipped UPS. They put the package on my apartment patio. It rained heavily that day. When I found the package, it was soaking wet. Thankfully, the device didn't get wet by the rain and there was no damage. Needless to say, I was a little pissed when I found that package sitting in a huge pool of water. Take home point: It doesn't matter who you ship with, they will manage to fuck it up somehow. http://3ringnecklace.com/ -
No one said it yet? I guess I will- !! Good job on saving your life- be sure to thank your rigger!! http://3ringnecklace.com/

I didn't see the incident, but I was at the DZ when it happened. On light and variable wind day, a camera guy with 300 jumps swooped his Sabre 2 150 into the landing area perpendicular to the final landing approach as another fun jumper. He clipped the other jumper's canopy just as he was landing. No one was hurt. He was told to go home for the remainder of the day. This camera guy has been told repeatedly to stop doing such radical front riser maneuvers, but he does them anyway. I don't know any other information about the incident. http://3ringnecklace.com/
