I know you can do wireless web & stuff with it. But I didn't get that cuz I never use it. I was reading a discussion group and some guy has a version of VNC that runs on the thing! "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Since the weather sucks like a Hoover right now, I went shopping for a new toy I had been lusting over for some time now. Since I'm hardly ever at my desk, and since I work with computers (which means I need to remember a gazillion passwords and settings), and since I hate lugging around a bunch of gadgets, I really wanted to buy a combined Palm/cell phone. It came down to the Handspring Treo & the Samsung I300. I went with the I300 for a couple reasons. It has a color display and a newer version of Palm OS. It has ring & vibrate modes (which I can't seem to find out if the Treo has). You can do voice memos with it (which I also can't find out for the Treo). Right now the Treo is GSM-only, which I didn't particularly like since it's so new & limited as far as service areas go. So I got the I300 (which has Sprint PCS as the provider). I've been dinking around with it a little and this things has tons of features. At least I have a toy to play with with the cloudy weather. I don't think so, but again, I'm not quite sure what it is and that's why I'm asking. Flat turn/braked turn, yeah, no problem. I got the impression that a flare turn was executed during the flare, the result being the carving turnf surfs you see some swoopers do. If I recall, it was noted that that is a valuable skill to have, beyond the carving surfs, because you may also need it to avoid people at flare time. So if the dude is gay, why did he lasso a SHE goat (i.e. a nanny)? "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Count me in. FYI. I'm coming out tomorrow too. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

I've heard this mentioned a few time in canopy control discussions. On the high performance canopies do you generally perform this with a harness shift, with the toggles or both? Seems a harness shift would be a safer way to start learning this than with the toggles. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Gotta love high-performance CRW! We have Sport Accuracy now. How long ya think before we officially see "Sport CRW"? "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Yet another reason I got out of law. It ain't a justice system, folks, it's a *legal* system. It doesn't matter whether the position taken is right or wrong, just whether it meets the requirements of law. And if you don't have a legit defense, blame the victim. An especially convenient tactic when the victim isn't around to defend him/herself. My condolences, and best of luck to your friends. HSS as well. You'd think I'd go with the YinYang, but I didn't like the colors. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Don't get me wrong, I still get psyched to do the jump when the door opens. But it's more of a "Yay! Plane ride's over! I get to jump now!" feeling than a "Holy S#!*. I'm jumping out of an airplane!" thing. Sort of that feeling of anticipation I get right before doing anything I really enjoy. That's sort of what my point was, but I'm not sure it came across that way. People have thir own subjective notion of what God is, but I'm pretty confident, if there is a God, that he/she wouldn't want us treating each other that way. Great bumper sticker I saw a while back. It said "God doesn't favor any group of people. Religions do that." That about sums it up. It was also pointed out to me that a lot of good has been done in the name of God too. Look at Mother Theresa. Or Mohandas Ghandi. Or Thich Nhat Hanh. Or Martin Luther King. Or Jesus. It really gets down to treating each other with kindness & respect. That's the common thread through almost every religion/philosophy you find. And that's really what it's all about. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

What I'm about to say is probably going to offend some people, but this is the way I felt and largely still the way I feel. Ironically, my wife in I were going in to her doctor to discuss having children. My wife is a DES child and so we wanted to know what the risks would be. We hadn't actually decided to have kids yet, but since we're both in our mid 30s, we needed to start thinking about it soon and make preparations. When w got there, the doctor's staff told us that two planes flew into the WTC and one into the Pentagon and that we were under attack. My initial reaction, like my reaction when first told the shuttle blew up was "yeah right". We went into the doctor's office, had our meeting and came out. Then we saw the TV. My first reaction was "Dang, now I'm never going to be able to BASE jump from the towers." Almost as soon as I said it I realized there were people in those buildings, people suffering and dying. People whos families were watching their loved ones dying on TV. I use humor a lot to break tense situations, but this was not the time to try to use it because it wasn't funny. Of course I felt horrible for being so callous. On the way home, I got to feeling really angry. Why on earth would I want to bring a child into this messed up world filled with hate and killing? When I watched the 9/11 documentary this past Sunday it rekindled those feelings anew. They're playing the video, and you hear these horrifying crashes. They tell you early on that those are people hitting the ground. People who decided to jump rather than burn to death (which I would have also opted to do). You just heard BAM, BAM, BAM... over and over. I just got sick and angry all over again. But probably not for the same reasons as most people. I turned to everyone and said "Remember, all this is what God wanted". How many more atrocities are we going to commit, how many innocent people are going to continue to suffer and die, in the name of God? How many more atrocities are we going to commit, how many innocent people are going to continue to suffer and die, in the name of mindless nationalism? More blood has been spilled in the name of God and/or Country, ironically, both intangible, subjective concepts, than I care to think. I'm sure it will continue until people learn to treat others as fellow human beings, not "us" and "them". John Lennon had it right in "Imagine". Again, sorry if I've offended people, but this is how I feel. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Great pics! Dude, if I had half you talent I'd seriously look into making that my career. You plan on flying camera in the future? "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Very well put Michelle. He may say he's sorry. He may say he'll change. He may even try to change for a while. But sooner or later he'll go back to being his normal self. Very interesting observation. My guess is that there are a few "critical points" where you see people leaving the sport. 1. First jump. People either love it, or decide one was enough. 2. Student status. People shell out the cash to get in or get sticker shock & leave. 3. 100-200 Jumps. The adrenaline is long gone. People stay now due to the challenge of learning to fly or move on to something more exciting. 4. 200+ Jumps. People get tired of the politics, or get stagnated skills-wise. I think the moving part & family changes are also factors. I'm pretty adaptable to whatever environment I find myself in ("No matter where you go, there you are." ). Liz & I have talked a lot about kids & she know's I'll still jump. Dealing with death (very recently for me) is another. There was a period where I thought long & hard about whether I would want to put Liz & my family through that. Then I just sort of decided this is who I am. Arrroooo???? K I musta missed that one on Slashdot. What's the deal with Office XP and WinXP? "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
-
Nope. No cutesy screensavers for me. Just a whole bucha IDEs, middleware installations, networking software, databases. Oh yeah, and Office XP. Wellllll.... that's a little different on two counts. One, RedHat manufactures neither Linux nor the components that they bundle. RedHat, like Mandrake, etc. is merely a distribution. They go out and collect all the (free) software that other folks are making, do a gazillion installs until they have a version that seems to have enerything playing nice. Then they package it up and sell it. And the bundled Office suites (other than KOffice), server software and development tools are trial versions or crippleware. You still have to go to the manufacturer and buy a license if you plan on using it. Usually the only things actually coded by Linux distributors are the nice user-friendly installer programs and system maintenence utilities. Other than that, they mainly just collect stuff and try to get everything to work together so you don't have to. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

I doubt it. We avoid M$ software whenever we can. Oracle databases, Java & Domino. Few other things. Of course everything out of Redmond runs just dandy... the apps and OS are made by the same company, and they really have no interest in allowing (and in my Oliver Stone-ish thinking, they probably make it as difficult as humanly possible) non-M$ software to play nice on their systems. Anyone remember Real Audio? How 'bout DR. DOS and Win 3.x? Feltin's IE uninstaller? The "competetor's" software wasn't crap. M$ intentionally broke functionality. So shame on me for leaving the Redmond fold. How dare I even consider running software that doesn't emanate from Redmond's hallowed halls. I deserve everything I get. If I just went back to being a good little slave, everything would be all right. Now you were saying Phree? "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Hrm. Then maybe it's because I'm using XP as a development station and installing all sorts of weird stuff on it. Win 2K seemed the best-behaved, from a developer's perspective, of any Windoze system. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
-
Oh don't get me wrong, Linux recovers from rogue software far more gracefully than any Windoze boxen can. And for those of you thinking of upgrading your office boxes to XP? Don't. There's only one word to describe XP from a sysad's perpective.... PAIN. All that M$ marketing that goes on & on about how much easier and convenient Windoze will make yours and your sysad's lives? Lies. All lies. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
-
No. Linux doesn't crash. The "dreaded weird shit" is usually along the lines of something starting up and just going *poof* for no apparent reason. That or cratering with a cryptic error message that takes about a week to decipher. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
