  1. in an aircraft emergency on the way to altitude, say at around 6k and the pilot yells GET OUT!!! or something similar, and everyone bails out, what happens next? as there would be minimal separation do people just concentrate on getting away from eachother? ive also wondered about lower altitude emergencies, eg between 1k and 2.5 where everyone would be pulling out the door, wouldnt there be risk of canopy collisions?
  2. for aircraft emergencies and stuff ive always said 1500 or lower its a case of grab the reserve handle and get out, if im going to the top i tend to pack a bit of a snivel so i wouldnt want to risk an aad fire from a slow opener.
  3. the moment the engine cuts in the cessna gets me going as well, more an adrenaline boost than fear. hope it never goes away.
  4. for me the door opening is the bit that gets my heart going, not sure why. might be from when i was doing static line/early freefall from a c206 and i was always next to the door so when it opened i always felt like i was going to fall out (as soon as i realised this was irrational as i was wearing a parachute it turned to fear of falling out and therefore having to retake the jump). for me when the door opens feels like the point of no return, before that its just a plane ride. without even thinking as soon as the door opens i check my hackey and then my handles, but as soon as the first group leaves the smile comes right back and i cant wait for my turn
  5. had the x-ray woman say it was illegal at london stanstead as you could use the lines to strangle someone, let me on anyway as she said it was ok cos i didnt have an evil face... they had more of a problem with my weight belt as i could hit someone with it, i then pointed out hitting them with the two litre bottle of coke i had would be just as effective
  6. twice (both under 200+ PD mains) ive seen the canopy dive almost underneath, once to me and once to someone else. the first time i did my 2 practice flares and then immediately toggle whipped it, but with no forward speed after the flares the canopy spun up on itself 3 or 4 times above the slider and dived off. the second time somebody at my altitude turned into me so we were head-on, panicked and turned to the left (annoying for me, seeing as one should always turn to the right to avoid a head on collision) but he did it so quick his canopy spun up and dived off below him, i swear he lost all tension in the lines for a second, is it possible to fall into your own canopy?
  7. just a quick qyestion, are vigils compatible with wings containers? any issues riggers have found? thanks Lee
  8. do you see many people using them nowadays?
  9. been looking at the site again, whats an SOS handle?
  10. oh yeah that was another questions, whats the difference between cordura and parapak?
  11. ive never used a chest mount, although i like the idea of CRW eventually, but i suppose for that i wouldnt be flying a pilot 168 (my other option is a triathlon 170, flown one a few times and i really like it, but its not part of the deal sunshine factory are offering, reason im going with them is a long story that bears no relevance to what i choose as extras to my rig) thanks to all of your advice my choices are now the following; vigil RSL fully artic stainless collapsable PC ff pud god i wish i had money
  12. im not concerned with the good looking stuff so much (although im gonna steer clear of luminous pink...) but resale and comfort are big ones (i dont even mention safety its that obvious) ive looked again at the options and the freefly pud is the same price as the hackey. i think a problem at the moment is all the prices are US$ and therefore look expensive ($60 for a kill line) but thats actually not much over £30 so i may get theat for resale value. another question, some of you mentioned argus? pros and cons? ive never met anybody with one
  13. looking at buying a rig (wings with pilot 168) and am constrained by budget, but there are so many attractive looking optional extras to be had and i dont know which to get as all of them add up to a sizeable amount. what do people really like in optional extras (from safety considerations to aesthetics)? im so far going for; Vigil RSL Cushioned back padding hackey as far as i can tell collapsable pilot chute wont do much for the performance of a 168 (i have no swooping aspirations) and just adds another dimension for packing, and personalised monograms on the MLW reduce the value of resale, although im considering getting 'plan b' put on the cutaway handle...
  14. 1. Get a rig 2. live on an american dropzone for a month or two 3. become an FS coach 4. do crw 5. reaching 200jumps might be a tad optimistic but what the hell... oh, and not die
  15. the 188 i jump used to open really slowly within its first 100-150 jumps but now (its got about 170+) i find i have to roll the tail a little more to slow them down a bit. ive only recently started packing so i take alot of time in flaking the inside, the only time i rushed it i got one set of twists and a sharp opening on a hop'n'pop
  16. i think it might be the adrenaline for newer jumpers (not that im not very new myself...). now im much more aware of whats going on in freefall, including how damn cold it can be, but now i wear two pairs of gloves and a buff over my face and its ok. this gets me thinking though, at 120+ mph is there any chance of air-resistance/friction warming you up a bit? my whole body gets the chills when the door opens but once out it only tends to be my face that feels so cold
  17. are vector 2's freefly friendly? looking to buy one from classifieds, DOM 1995 if that makes a difference thanks
  18. sounds quite good, another thing though is how easy would it be to get a job as a temporary packer (as in i could jump/pack every other day etc) at DZs in the US? will need to be funding my living etc... do any of these DZs have caravans to rent etc?
  19. im beginning to make plans for the 9month or so gap between graduating and going into the RN which involve a good few months workin down my local pub to get some cash, then going on a jumping spree... im thinking the US as it will probably be over christmas time and i can imagine certain areas of the US dont get as cold as here! would you suggest going to one dropzone (was thinking somewhere in california or florida, maybe arizona as ive got relatives there) and staying there for a month or so, settling into the jumping scene, making some good friends etc (living in a bunkhouse or tent or something) or should i move around and experience a few DZs? im looking to become a warp coach at some point, or learning to freefly properly (wont have the money for both alas) should have 125-150 jumps by then at the very least and hopefully my own rig, any suggestions would be appreciated, cheers
  20. i used that count, but i found (as did many others) that with all the excitement of jumping the count was slightly rushed so the metronome thing sounds like a good idea
