Yossarian replied to Yossarian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions

First rig, first pack job, first jump of season...
Yossarian replied to reinhart36's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
first ever pack job on a brand new canopy, might also be the first time you kick ur rig across the room in anger... -
i love the title of the video, nice and dramatic
-
each lineset is a different colour where they attach to the canopy, A is blue, B orange etc... makes packing quicker :D
-
i agree with you to a point in that if you are paying someone then they should do the whole job but when those same people start gettin itchy cos their rig might not be ready for the load then that valuable minute spent doing housekeeping becomes important. i always stow my brakes when i land anyway as i jump quite a big canopy it means theres less fabric to lose control of on the walk back to the hangar
-
i dont mind if they dont cock the pilot chute as ill do that again anyway once the canopies laid down just before it goes in the bag, brakes and slider is a big help and its alot quicker to see the brakes have been set correctly than to do it yourself. i do have a question though... when i pack student kit i expect, and usually do, find the brakes unstowed (and a few step throughs and general entanglements...). am i in a position to teach a student how to set the brakes or is this instructor territory...?

is it just me or does that not look like its 'WWII vintage'? otherwise looks like a decent alti for £30

i saw that at the BPA AGM, looked like the reserve handle had come out of the pouch and gone under the MLW, didnt see how that happened though, cant remember was it a 2-handed cutaway?, i wondered why he kept his cutaway as well... the bloke on the stand was saying that a cypres wouldnt have saved him because it would have deactivated with deployment...? (not trying to start a vigil v. cypres debate, i know thats going on in other forums, but is that true?) also seems an rsl might have been a plan...
-
to be fair i think mr booth will have thought these things through at some point in the process of r&d. i am intrigued more as to why these side effects dont occur as opposed to worrying if they will
-
cant imagine it'll do the magnetic compass any good, the pilot will wonder why hes always going south!

the pilot 188 i use at the mo has about 150 jumps on it and it packs fine, nothing like the f111 student canopies i pack but its still easy enough. ive got a brand spankin new 168 on the way and im not looking forward to packing it, psycho packing seems a good plan though. ive practiced it on the 188 but never actually jumped a psycho pack, something about the name puts me off...

i tried to dive a silhouette 190 once (maybe a 210, cant remember) and the damn thing span up on itself
-
good luck, taken me nearly 2 years to complete my gear collection, and now im just waiting for my rig to arrive there are new temptations like full-faces and freefly suits... i jumped a silhouette 190 hybrid once, thought it was nice and smooth, quite liked it but its only one jump and ive only jumped about 6 types of canopy

isnt a B-license required for a full face? or is that just the UK?
-
one tends to find ones knackers swinging between ones legs, and in chillier climes they tend to shrink to the size of garden peas and can be found somewhere in the lung area
-
u should go to hinton its only half hour down the road, dress warm though, i nearly froze a knacker off the other week
-
i cant get on it either
-
also ordered my rig after christmas and it wont be here till march... whats wrong with jumping in the winter? went the other day and it was -32c at alti, there were snowmen on the target!
-
so what happened? did he cut it away eventually? what could have caused the bag to lock?
-
id imagine it would leave the same kind of bruise as any other solid round object hitting you in the face at 60mph... bag of frozen peas anyone...?
-
cheers, not much of a beast with the old needle and thread but ill have a go... the wax tape was like a very very thin shoelace length type stuff covered in wax, instructions said it was for tying on to helmet brackets
-
ive just bought a brand spanking new audible and mounted it in my protec with the wax-tape that comes with the audible but for me not to have to reinstall it everytime i jump i have to mount it with the display facing inwards is this ok? or is the speaker on the other side? i used it for the first time today but it was only a hop'n'pop so the wind-noise wasnt that loud, and it wasnt as loud as i expected it to be

alot of students i speak to say they never see the airfield when they get out or even for a while under canopy even though theyre looking everywhere, and i used to have the same problem, got quite worried on my first jump. im not saying the following is the case here, but most of the time they were looking everywhere except straight down under their feet... especially when spotting from higher altitudes the dz is pretty damn small, and if its unfamiliar then unless you know where to look it is quite hard to find, but if i move my big toe, there it is! ive never been in a plane where theyve said 'just go on green' - i have been in aircraft where ive asked what separation is needed and theyve said 'wait until were at an angle of 45degrees...' and on my first go at spotting where i said 'what should i do if theres a cloud over where i think the dz is?' to be greeted with the stirling answer - 'get out of our way, are you colour blind?!' (referring to the green light i believe) made me feel quite uneasy

Coming off large doses of adrenaline
Yossarian replied to michaeldupreez's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At the moment im suffering from that very phenomenon, mostly as i have essay deadlines and presentations but also because i have yet again spent the weekend at a very windy dropzone (anyone who's been to langar since thursday can see some obvious physical evidence of that...). when i have jumped, i tend to sleep like a baby on the car journey home (unless im driving, then a fast food break is usually in order some way down the motorway. i also find it doesnt take normally so many g&t's to get me pissed as normal after ive been jumping
