i thought they just did intentional cutaways, wore three rigs, i saw some old pics of a normal rig (the test main in it and a reserve) and also a belly mounted reserve. cant imagine they still have belly mounted round reserves though
-
only found it in some classifieds today so havent been to the dropzone yet, trouble is im at uni without a car so i can only get down there when someone with a car goes. the lines have been replaced recently though, and with it being a hybrid and used it will be easier to pack (something i havent quite mastered yet)
-
reserves a 150 also, but my question really is about a hybrid main with 600 jumps on it, it could be a while before i actually use the rig but i have the money now and may not have in the future
-
have found a rig for sale (no issues with the rig) but the main is a PD silhouette 150 with 600 jumps. as i only have 50 jumps and only around 5 jumps on a 170 (all in high winds) i dont feel qualified to jump it yet but i would like to buy whilst i have the money. the whole package -cypres is £1000, what are peoples thoughts on this canopy with 600 jumps?
-
yeah id say do raps, in the long run it may be slightly more expensive (depends how good you are) but the cost is spread over a long time, it took me 28jumps at £35 a pop to qualify through raps, plus the extra canopy time you dont get through aff.

did the subsequent projects not succeed then?
-
thats one hell of a story

strangely enough that looks like the best way to deal with that one...

whats the altitude record? ive heard about it being so high they had to wear a pressure suit, so i wondered how they got up there - balloon maybe? i also heard a story about a guys mask slipping and his lungs exploding at very high alti (or something similar)

First Skydive was 1914. First Skydiver was Ms.

army air corps pilots in the first world war werent allowed to wear parachutes because apparently it encouraged cowardice... i think our balloon observers wore parachutes though, the idea being that if u saw a german plane u got out rapidly cos balloons didnt stand a chance -
has anybody ever seen one of these? ive heard stories but no confirmations about what they do if u get an unconcious student hung up, something about the instructor attaching himself to the static line, sliding down errol flynn style with a knife in their teeth (well not necessarily but its a cool image), grabbing the students reserve handle and cutting the line, is this true?

Misrouted Cheststrap – How to survive?

we have to be signed off at manifest as having had a check before we walk out to the plane, obviously only you are responsible for your kit but surely someone should be asking the guy who checked him some questions aswell. has anyone actually ever died from falling out of their harness for this reason? -
in the case of a static line hangup i would have thought cutting away would do nothing, as your attached to the aircraft by the static line and not the lines/risers. normal procedure is for the instructor to cut your static line and you pull the reserve . if the student failed to do so then there would definately be a requirement for an aad.

im not saying anything about beating the rsl, i mean to view an aad as the same as an rsl if something is missed out, for example pulling cutaway but not touching reserve handle, for any reason, including, for instance, a popped shoulder. what i mean is that in such an instance they perform exactly the same function, popping the reserve because u havent. what i went on to say was that whereas with an aad fire its obvious on the ground that the aad fired, the rsl will go whether you've performed eps correctly or not so nobody can tell if youve messed up
-
youve taken me out of context, i was simply saying that sometimes freak occurences could prevent u from carrying out complete procedures, thus making an aad a very handy piece of kit. when i said about not touching the reserve and the rsl doing the work being the same as the cypres fire i stand by, its still relying on string to do the job your left hand should be doing, only its all academic cos noone could tell either way what you had done
-
i was basically taught to wriggle, ie. do anything to break the burble. i dont agree with 'if uve had an aad fire take up golf', as people have said, s***e happens, if i had a cypres go off id still jump unless someone physically stopped me. an aad fire is as much a non-fatality as an rsl working on someone who doesnt touch their reserve handle after a cutaway, for any reason.

on my cat 8 jump i had 5secs of pc hesitation (spring loaded pc), video scared the pants off my mum :) i knew something was wrong when the spring hit me on the head then hit my foot, camera guy said he thought it was gonna horseshoe round my leg cos thats when i started wriggling like a man possessed to clear the burble, u can see my hands goin down to my handles when it pops out and opens so hard it turned my groin black. nice :)

Jumper Separation: What is the norm at your DZ?
Yossarian replied to CrazyL's topic in Safety and Training
i dont understand why rw goes before ff, surely free fliers fall much faster and so would start to catch up with rw? i would have thought u drop the fast fallers first to get them out of the way... -
thank holy crap for the cypres eh? read a few articles on the cypres website about saves (been alot more than i thought) and there a loads who've had a pc in tow and not been able to find their reserve in flat (baggy clothing, not where they thought it would be etc) and have just given it up for over and waited for the cypres to kick in at 750, think the average reserve ride was about 7secs...
-
i used to fly powered aircraft and gliders and we were always told to put the chest strap on last and take it off first because if the parachute fired (in skydiving cases the reserve) then u wouldnt be strangled by it if it towed u across a field. its just a habit thats stuck with me and doesnt seem to do any harm

at my dz all students (raps at least) are on 288's until they qualify, regardless of how many jumps it takes them to do so (one guy took over 40) i was very bored of a 288 by the time i was finished on 28jumps but im only now jumping a 170 (im 11 stone), and theres no way i would have jumped anything below a 210 in my first few jumps, as it turns out im ok under canopy but ive seen many many students who would be either dead or very badly hurt if theyd been jumping anything as responsive as a 150, people putting their hands up, asymetrical flaring, no flaring and 30ft flaring etc is bad enough on a docile 210 for the inexperienced

our cessna and PAC have both got whopping great hunting knives by the door, plus if theres a raps load up the instructor will have a beast strapped to his leg
-
has anyone here had to use a hook knife? and why students aren't allowed to wear them? we were told a story about a student whos reserve prematured in the door and wrapped round the tail, they immediatly chopped (didnt do anything obviously) then whacked out the hook knife and cut themselves loose before falling away, obviously not alot happened when they tried to deploy the main, how much of that is true however i have no idea...
