  1. I lived in Baytown for six years, and have since moved close to San Antonio. I learned to Skydive in the Beaumont area, and was saddened to hear that my first DZ was flattened by a tornado:( I realize some people had their homes flattened. My heart goes out to all of them. BTW, I know this is a Skydive Houston thread, so I would like to add that I can't wait to visit there again and see some old faces (nothing personal JohnRich
  2. Looks like Ike indeed is coming to South Padre. We'll be moving our family reunion inland for sure. I did speak with Bob and he said they weren't skydiving out there anymore Maybe I'll meet him another time. Mrs. WaltAppel All things work together for good to them that love God...Romans 8:28

  7. Will be headed to South Padre Island for some fun next weekend. My family has been asking me about skydiving out there, but I can't seem to find any phone numbers. I have found a lot of info. on the web about skydiving on the beach/taking off from Brownsville airport, but no good contact info. Is there a club or small dz near there? 14. I am in college to become an interpreter for the deaf, and we are currently working on a group project in my Deaf Community class. The projects include a presentation (in front of class) and a written paper. My group is reporting on deaf sports, and of course my part is skydiving. Yesterday I made a jump with my two very good deaf friends, Brian and Jonathan. Wendy Faulkner took awesome video, and it will be my visual aide for the project. Man, I never imagined I would SKYDIVE for a grade! It was great to be able to enjoy two of my passions at the same time. Thanks Brian and Jonathan...and special thanks to Wendy for the nice video! Learning ASL

Hi DSE, ASL is wonderful!!! I spend a lot of time on ASLPRO.COM. There's a ditionary of everyday words as well as idioms and catch phrases. There's also a "quiz me" section on everyday words and fingerspelling. What I love the best (and what is ideal) is when I go to the dropzone and spend time with the two Deaf skydivers we have out there. It is so rewarding. I started school a couple of weeks ago to become a certified interpreter and I just LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. I have found that learning signs is the easy part....putting it all together is a different story though. ASL is not English...it has a different structure. So it's an entirely different ballgame when you're trying to understand what a fluent ASL user is "saying". When you ask for someone's name, you sign "Your name what?" Not "What's your name?" like in English. It takes some getting used to. Anyway, there is a great need for interpreters and ASL teachers. I hope you do pursue ASL...it's a beautiful language! Good Luck!
  19. Kathleen, thankyou for one of the best skydives I will ever have.
  20. Wish I could come hang out with you guys, but I'm a college student again so I'm kinda tied up. I'll catch you all next time. Have fun!
  21. You jinxed my Wenesday night Sign Language Class you twirp! We students were practicing signing with eachother, and we were doing the sign for "nice to meet you." Anyway, the girl I was working with asked me a question about the sign for "meet". She asked if it matter which way you held the sign....and I told her I wasn't sure. When I asked the teacher, and demonstrated both signs the other student was asking me about, she informed me that one of the signs I had made was the equivalent to asking someone to go to bed with you. Now I've got a tainted reputation in school and I've just begun!! Thanks a lot Walt! Mrs. WaltAppel All things work together for good to them that love God...Romans 8:28
  22. That is adorable! I'm going to tell that story to my teachers.
  23. Oh man Billy!!! I was waiting for you to come on here!! Glad you hadn't turned in for the night. That't funny right there!
  24. Funny thing is, I could actually sign the question to the teacher, and no one else in the class would know what I was talking about. It would be hilarious to see the expression on her face though. Anyway, Walt saw me signing with a couple of deaf guys at the dropzone this weekend. Leave it to him to take something beautiful to the gutter! Mrs. WaltAppel All things work together for good to them that love God...Romans 8:28
