  1. Nah, no need to get fusion to get off fossils. Seriously, if we can get our cars off gas then we can pretty much get electric from a lot of sources and crack hydrogen. There's lot of sources of energy. The problem is we're hooked so much on gas we don't even explore them.
  2. Well, we sorta have it through our health insurance system which your workplace has to provide to you. Although last Tuesday I hit about 5 offices that "didn't take my insurance company" so finally I just paid for my visit on my credit card. My insurance company will still cover most of it, but it's just more of a pain in the ass. Also our health care system has things in place to absorb the cost to those without insurance. When my brother had a heart attack the bill was about 80k and he didn't have insurance. The hospital absorbed the costs. Not perfect, but people worry that our government couldn't handle a health care system. They might be right too...
  3. I'm curious. Have there been any calculations on when we're likely to run out of fossil fuel supplies?
  4. Oh yeah, don't touch the "holy" automobile. Hell, most cities were designed around the car. We could have some pretty impressive mass transit systems by now if it weren't for cars. But then we'd all miss out on those hour plus traffic jams on the way to work.

    DZ Dilemma!

Why don't you at least drive out to the other DZ and talk with the instructors there?
  6. Don't worry about doing everything perfect. Just have fun.
  7. Yeah, commercial companies like Microsoft never do anything like this. There are full support contracts available for Linux, MySQL and Postgres. Some of the higher end support contracts for MySQL also allow for customization. You want a feature, tell them and they'll code it in. Everyone's been bitching at MS to make Windows more secure and stable for the last 8 years, but they really haven't done a good job of that despite customers shelling out a few billion a year. The "you get what you pay for" concept just hasn't held up in the software industry. Software runs on hubris as much as cashflow. I've worked with what you call 'freeware'(which in actuality is software licensed under the GPL) for about 10 years running now. The quality is up to anything commercial and the customer support is generally better, unless you're a non-technical person.
  8. You mean this isn't the Linux support board? Hmm, wondered why there were so many posts about skydiving around here in the last 2 years...
  9. Andy, Postgres is "production quality" but that doesn't mean it's the right database for your project. I'd recommend joining the Postgres mailing list and ask the people there specific questions about what you need your database to do and whether Postgres would be the right tool for the job. There are some things it'll be good at and other things it just won't do well. As far as "getting what you paid for", I've been using MySQL in production systems for 4 years now without a single failure. I wouldn't use MySQL for everything(in fact, I use MS SQL as well), but I abuse the hell out of it and it has never failed me despite it being a zero cost database.
  10. Just think of the sweet rig you'll be able to buy in a year or two with a home equity loan.
  11. Uhn, I'm jelous. I got 20 minutes the first day of my tunnelcamp. Then 2 hours in a doctor office back home getting xrays the second day of tunnelcamp and sitting at home my third day(today) waiting for my arm to get better. Was sorta like my old SL crash and burn training but with more freefall time
  12. I think the time to give up the sport is when the reasons for jumping are outweighed by the reasons not to jump. Everyone has their own reasons for jumping out of a plane. Figure out what your reasons are and then ask yourself if maybe you can fullfill those reasons better through some other hobby or sport.
  13. This sucks. If it was intentional, maybe it was a matter of losing respect for the dangers because of familiarity?
  14. I think it was the "I'm a RW Godess now, I've seen you in the tunnel, you suck, you may bow before me" glow. But that's easily confused with the FF-glow.
  15. Yep, she was definately glowing.
  16. Heh, I always love talking to the people that radio down first time jumpers. You get some really interesting stories.

Got a link to the video? I know one of the tracks off one of their vids is Headboard, Tell Me How. You can find that on mp3.com.
  18. Cool. Hope I see him around next weekend. I should be flailing around in the air that weekend unless the weather is as crappy as it was all last month.
