http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23892783 Parliament just voted down Cameron's motion to approve UK military action against Syria. And Cameron now says he will comply with the majority's wishes. (I'll bet privately he's heaving a sigh of relief - now he's off the hook.) This is Obama's slim chance for an out from the corner he's painted into. Congress is starting to demand that it be consulted before Obama takes military action. Obama should do exactly that, on the grounds that the democratic process requires it, blah, blah, whatever. If Congress approves action, then he can point the finger back at them if/when it goes sideways. If Congress says no, Obama can then say that he's doing exactly what Cameron is doing - respecting the democratic process. (Blah, blah, whatever.)

So he got sentenced to 15 years but it was reduced to 31 days? Am i getting this right? Close, but not quite. What it means is that after 31 days in jail (or maybe 30 days w/credit for 1 day already served) he will be paroled, and will spend the remainder of his 15 year sentence on supervised parole. I'm PRESUMING that that means (as it does in most other states) that, just like any other parolee, if he violates his parole, he can be re-incarcerated on the sentence. In fairness to your point, though, it also means that after 31 days, as long as he toes the line and keeps his nose clean, he basically walks.

Thanks, that's helpful. Not exactly a "minimum-to-maximum" range as in other jurisdictions that do have formal sentencing guidelines, but it does provide a bit of basic structure.

QED.

This is just a FWIW. I'm not a Montana lawyer, but based on a quick Google search, it appears that Montana is NOT one of the states that has mandatory sentencing guidelines, for crimes that fall under Montana state law, that a state-court judge is generally required to follow. (Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong about that.) Assuming that's correct, that means that the prosecution cannot appeal the sentence to a higher court. ================== ETA: I now see from re-reading the OP article that prosecutors are contemplating an appeal. So maybe it is permissible under Mont. law; if so, I'll stand corrected. (If an appeal is permissible, then, in the absence of "maximum/minimum" sentencing guidelines, my educated guess would be that prosecutors would argue that the sentence is so out of proportion with the crime that it legally should be deemed "an abuse of the trial court's discretion".)

How do tandem instructors deal with jumping some of these super hot babes?

Jail Becomes Home for Husband Stuck with Lifetime Alimony

That example is a pretty egregious breach of client trust. 3 years off is relatively light; there are many states in which he'd have been disbarred outright. -

That's what I've been thinking, too re: what makes it more likely that Assad, rather than a non-regime actor, did the gassing: this was in suburban Damascus. If Assad ferociously went after that target with artillery, he'd be destroying his own capital city. Not solid proof, of course, but a noteworthy circumstantial factor.

USPA BOD... Nothing more than a mouth piece for manufacturers
Andy9o8 replied to Ron's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Agreed. For example, I took a long hiatus from active jumping back when most people regularly pulled in the 2000-2500 ft range. I stayed semi-active in the business & community aspects of the sport & kept up with the mags & a few safety days, etc., but didn't get out to the DZ very often. Years later, when I decided to get recurrent and went out to the DZ to hang out & watch a couple hours of jumping, my initial visual impression from the ground was "how high" people were opening. Of course, that wasn't high for them, it was normal. When I mentioned that we used to regularly pull close to 2000, most of them thought that was crazy. BTW, at about 50ish jumps I had a total malfunction pulling just under 2500. The result was getting fully under reserve at about 900 ft. Glad I didn't need an extra few seconds to make that happen. -
Snotty.

I may be in favor of "punishing those responsible" but I disagree that "WE" should be the ones doing the punishing. But we must - it's already bought and paid for with the money we've spent so we can have a military 50% larger than what's needed to protect our soil, at the expense of national health coverage that protects families even if their breadwinners lose their jobs, like every other country the industrialized world has. Something has to justify that; as often as not, being the world's policeman is it.

As I said up-thread, why do we focus on type of weaponry? Why shouldn't the indiscriminate shooting and conventional shelling and bombing of children be the crossed line? Either way, the innocents are just as dead. Because, mind you -and I'm sure you don't intend it - the standard you're effectively enabling is one that sends the following message to governments that mass-murder their own people: as long as you use only conventional weapons, odds are you'll get away with it.

At long last - an oasis of clarity in a sea of mud.

which does absolutely nothing to prove exclusivity in anyone's mind but your own or that of those who share basically the same subset of faith as yours. This really is fundamental. Until you've tried to live your life as a devout Muslim, Jew, Hindu, etc. (and not just using the dysfunctional hedonism of your youth as a comparitor), you've really got no basis of comparison to say: devout Christianity is not just a great way, it's the ONLY way.
-
But every religion says that, Ron: "Ours is the ONLY way." Just once I'd like to hear some religion say, "Ours is a good way; although the other religions' ways are good, too." OK, that's the Unitarians, but you get the point.

Jail Becomes Home for Husband Stuck with Lifetime Alimony
Andy9o8 replied to Channman's topic in Speakers Corner
He may (or may not) be able to avoid jailing by moving about, but he probably can't avoid the judgment, since the general rule is that judgments can be transferred to other states. Re: family law-type judgments like alimony, the transferability/enforceability thereof might vary from one state to another. 50 states, 50 separate sets of laws. -

(first blush): I don't know NJ law, but the article seems to suggest that NJ is not very amenable (yet) to petitions to modify based on changed economic circumstances. -
Negative reactions to the sport
Andy9o8 replied to NorrinRadd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not any more: I never raise the subject with people who don't already know. If they don't know it, they can't say their stupid shit to me about it. Occasionally I'll happen to overhear a whuffo say something painfully ignorant and/or judgmental about skydiving. Takes me a lot of discipline to just STFU, but I usually manage to. -

Hi. The markups are screwing up again when you hit the "quote" button to reply to someone's post. This time it makes it seem as though the post you're responding to is part of your post...or something like that. I'm also seeing other people whose posts seem to be screwed up, one way or another, when they use the Quote button recently. It happens often enough that I wonder whether it can be attributable solely to user error or technique, or if there's either a code issue and/or a user-friendliness issue.

OK, maybe that's not a solution, but it is perspective. Just to be clear (to all), I wasn't dissing stay at home moms. I was suggesting to Nataly - by giving her one random benchmark for comparison - that she view the life and lifestyle she has, and has lived the past several years, and focus first and foremost on its positives.
