What kind of retarded response is that? You put up an article to support your position, then call the article pure unsupported speculation. No wonder the denier movement lives mostly in the US. Here's an article with the perfect headline for those who would twist and squirm in any direction possible to back fossil fuels. Just be sure not to read beyond the headline. RIP The Artist Formerly known as Prince
masterblaster72 replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
Great tribute, which sums it up for me too -- I've admired his music since hearing his hits on the radio as a kid. RIP Prince. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
60+ died yesterday in Pakistan -- mostly Christian women and children due to a bombing claimed by the Taliban. Do you attribute this attack to western aggression against Muslims? If so, do you think such attacks would cease completely if western countries stopped meddling in the Middle East? I read this ridiculous opinion piece the other day, and I recall the griping about the facebook check-in feature for Paris and not Beirut back in November. My conclusion as to why westerners mourn in unequal terms is simple: these mass killing events have become par for the course in urban centers in the Muslim world, while they are extremely rare in relatively peaceful Western European urban centers. For the writer to expect equal mourning for anyone anywhere isn't exactly reasonable. Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?
masterblaster72 replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
Funny, I mentioned the Berlusconi analogy here before. People just don't learn from history -- even when it's that recent. This already happened in Italy with the same type of personality and it ended quite badly for that country. They're still trying to pick up the pieces. I wouldn't put it beyond America to elect Donald Trump -- and then re-elect him. If it happened with GWB, it can happen with any idiot. This, from the same fellow who posted above about projection. Some of us are better off living in countries where guns aren't an integral part of the culture. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I'm not a hoplophobe; at the same time, if I purchased a weapon, I certainly wouldn't post about it on a public forum and celebrate with a "woot." I never understood the glee people show when talking guns on these forums. Happiness about a purchase of a new rig or AAD I can understand. But guns are made for killing and so I find the celebration and back-patting odd. And I see it on these forums often. I'm not judging or saying anything is wrong with all of this; it is just something I don't understand. Why would anybody attack the American Dream. The American dream used to be about the ability to make something of yourself from nothing. Now it's about being born with a silver spoon, getting your way your whole life, boasting about it, having your own reality tv show and then running for president? Such times we live in. Charles Koch tosses a refrigerator into Hell
masterblaster72 replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Probably a plug for Bernie in hopes of him getting the democratic nomination so that the republicans have an easier opponent in November. Here's the Koch brothers' latest: a new group to spend $10 million annually to promote traditional vehicles and stunt the rising popularity of electric vehicles. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/koch-electric-vehicles_us_56c4d63ce4b0b40245c8cbf6 Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?
masterblaster72 replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
That happened already with eight years of G.W. Bush. If the American people don't learn from that, they will never learn. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -

That's a bit too much insight for a forum where troll posts linking to commondreams or breitbart are par for the course. Be careful or you might get banned In addition to the hobgoblins voters fear, the type of demagogue people choose to believe in an election is a factor as well. I tend to believe the demagogue who travels economy class whose parents came to the country with nothing and who made something of himself entirely on his own; I give far less attention to the types demanding to be flown in private jets for a campaign stop or a paid speech, or the mean-spirited childish bullies not the least bit grounded in reality. What you mentioned about the candidate who appeals to the intellect is likely accurate, though each election cycle I do hope for a different outcome. Great read with spot-on observations, thanks for that. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

And you're doing two things: avoiding a question I've asked you in good will, and attacking my character twice by telling me I'm lying and calling me a xenophobe. Which means you don't like the question because you simply cannot answer it so you take on an increasingly hostile tone. If you think it's too a simplistic a question to address for a complex issue, why not just say in the first place rather than go on the attack? This is exactly why this forum has become increasingly shitty over the years. I am trying -- really. I'm also not in the business of attacking people. And for the sake of discussion, which I do believe in, even in this forum -- I'll address your question. To prevent further attacks, step up surveillance of suspected terror cells, and deport or imprison those who associate with inciting hatred and encouraging radicalization (Anjem Choudry being an example). Someone not a refugee in Germany claiming to be one from Algeria or Morocco and caught groping? Deport them, full stop. Can't deport them? Then they'll have to serve time like any other German citizen would. To ensure security in wake of Paris attacks to avoid the risk in the future I would close the borders of my country -- as many of the transit and destination countries are already doing. If I'm the prime minister of Greece or Italy? Deploy the navy to turn boats back. It would send a message to the traffickers that the EU will no longer make their business model a successful one, and it will in the end keep migrants safe in Turkey rather than risk death as we just saw a couple of days ago with 40+ dead from overturned boats. Schengen and the EU are at risk of dissolution -- it's becoming dire, due in no small part to letting oceans of people in unchecked. Continuing on the current course for the sake of "human rights" and "tolerance" is simply ruinous in the short and long term. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Are you willing to accept more Paris massacres or are you going to deport or detain the millions of muslims already living in Europe? You know, I forgot that SC is about posturing and grandstanding rather than real dialogue and exchange -- I've asked you a simple question twice now; never mind that you don't have an answer...yet somehow I'm the one who needs to answer more questions from you even if I've answered your question before after having asked you the same question twice. Lovely place this is, really. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Paris massacres? Almost every perpetrator of the Paris attacks was French or Belgian. What is it about xenophobia that turns off the reality switch in otherwise rational people? Yes, all named attackers were already living in Europe. I raised the Paris massacres in the context of at least one attacker entering through Greece as a "refugee" -- not in the context of Muslims already living in Europe. Here's background if you haven't already read about the migrant attacker identified by fingerprint. I'm an immigrant to two countries in my lifetime, and my parents have immigrated to four in theirs. I believe in respecting the laws and customs of my host countries without expecting my host countries to change according to what I believe. If you want to call me xenophobic to avoid answering the question, that's your choice. But I'll ask again. How many more mass gropings and terrorist attacks would you be willing to accept to show the world how tolerant you are? For starters, let's know who we're taking into our countries and verify identities. If we can't (and we haven't -- for tens and possibly hundreds of thousands) -- then turn people back to where they came from. Allowing an ocean of people to cross borders unhindered from places where terrorist groups thrive (Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq) is a very serious risk that needs to be addressed immediately. Call it "fear," call it "xenophobia" if you like; I prefer to think of it as common sense. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

OK. But let's try it for a while and see where it gets us. How many more gang gropings and massacres a la Paris would you be willing to risk to prove to the world how tolerant you are? At some point, the host countries need to look after their own interests -- which is actually in the interest of the migrants they've taken in. OK. So they can help because they want to. Denmark doesn't really want to anymore, Sweden will soon close its borders, Norway is shipping migrants back across the Russian border, and Balkan countries are building fences. In Germany, Merkel is facing pressure to put a lid on the influx. Not too many left that want to at this point... Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Great intention there. However, that comes with the assumption that the immigrants want to be integrated. Integration means actually changing parts of ones mentality and behavior -- such as letting a daughter date/marry a non-Muslim and letting her choose not to wear a hijab/niqab or even adhere to Islam if she doesn't want to. I doubt that even a minority of migrants to Western Europe from the middle east are open to such ideas. The burden of reducing the number of backwards thinking Muslims can't be entirely on western governments; it's a two-way street. As long as people from these parts of the world insist on hating each other over the tiniest of differences in their tribes/languages/religious beliefs, there will never be economic or political development. The west cannot indefinitely bear the burden for the consequences of this problem. Large western European countries with former empires? Maybe. However I don't think countries like Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Finland, any eastern European or Balkan countries terrorized Africa or the Middle East in the last few centuries. Mardi Gras? As far as groping goes, Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC and Carnival in Rio come to mind. However it is usually expected as part of the celebrations in those events. Rape and robbery are usually not part of the festivities as they were in Germany on the new year. Welcome to Speaker's Corner. Sorry to tell you, but if you're looking for honest and civilized dialog you've come to the wrong place. This place has largely become a den of trolls, stuck in a vicious cycle of those who enjoy feeding them while the trolls keep on coming back for more. That said, hope you stick around -- good to see some sense in here every now and then. Reading what he has in the past said about himself and his belligerent responses to criticisms, he bears a remarkable similarity to that current newsmaker with the bad toupee... Funny you say that -- I said to my wife the other day that he will likely be a GOP presidential candidate in a decade or so. I didn't read it that way. In the context of what he posts here though, it is definitely an ambiguous question Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Your English is fine; I was referring to previous discussions I've had with you in which you deny your religion has anything to do with atrocities that continue to happen in its name around the globe -- almost on a daily basis now. To deny an Islamic element to these atrocities is at best hiding your head in the sand. The media do report on the Rohingya persecuted by Buddhists, Muslim migrants stranded at borders, those kicked by a camerawoman in Hungary, Shiites, Christians and Yezidis killed by Sunnis, and extremists in the US who think all Muslims are terrorists. Just as the media will report on the actions of a terrorist organization that calls itself Islamic State, which happens to be led by a caliph with a PhD in Islamic Studies. What do you expect the media to do differently in their coverage of these events? On the subject of stranded migrants, Macedonia continue to let refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq pass through. Those from countries with no war (Morocco for example) are not allowed to pass through. I don't see a problem here.
