  1. Personally I think it's a good thing when the government steps in and keeps companies like Microsoft from (completely) eliminating the competition. I also like it when my government steps in to help make sure that I can pick some food off a store shelf and not have to worry whether or not I'll be convulsing in a pool of my own waste in about an hour or on my way to the morgue the next day. On the other hand, THIS is government getting out of control.
  2. I expected there to be some issues with "for hire" usage and the like. But I thought there might be some more leeway for things like personal YouTube mixes. I really don't see how the record companies are going to deal with this in the years to come. I mean, how do they deal with a mash up of a mash up etc.?
  3. in all likelihood it's both. My point is that an investigation doesn't mean that justice will be served, especially an internal investigation. Look at our own government for example if you prefer to take Israel out of the picture. Third parties can often do a better job of investigating, but that's no guarantee either.
  4. I'll admit I haven't dug into this topic as deeply as I should, but does anyone have any idea how freely downloadable content is treated on sites like YouTube? Some bands, nine inch nails for example, make some of their music available for free.
  5. true. that why there are courts and official investigators (whether internal or external), like in any other democracy. That's the theory. In practice however, "justice" isn't always well served.
  6. That first one is VERY nice! Cloud, plane, sun, facial expressions on both. Great shot!
  7. And you probably won't. Similarly, our 43rd President said that torture was unacceptable AND stated unequivocally that we didn't do it. Taking the word of an official, especially one who may be directly involved in an infraction/crime, is not necessarily the best option if you're interested in the full story.
  8. I know that much of the Israeli public does not approve. Most of my arguments WRT this conflict come from Israeli sources. The problem that many of us have with internal investigations is that they tend to be a bit biased in their results. And in the case of this one, the Military Advocate General order the initiation of an investigation only after Haaretz printed the story, which was three weeks after the information was made available to the Chief of the General Staff.
  9. Yes, that is the image they try to paint. Some of us just don't buy it. Some of us don't want a "regular guy" holding the office of President of the United States. We had that and it proved to be a very expensive mistake.
  10. Some of us do. But we're in the minority. I wouldn't go so far to say that we're well informed WRT this conflict. Obama's mishumourous miscues get more attention than the war crimes that either we or our allies commit. +1
  11. And Countrywide is suing AIG for not covering the loans that went bad, and AIG is suing Countrywide for "misrepresenting" the quality of the loans. It sounds like the lawyers will be the ones pulling us out of the recession (if we can keep the money onshore).
  12. See? "Change" IS coming! Another campaign promise delivered by Obama
  13. I'm running short on time so I only skimmed the article. I think the arguments against accepting the aid are well crafted, and quite possibly sincere. However, when Alaska starts turning away Federal funds it's likely either a sign of the Apocalypse or more likely, political opportunism.
  14. So which enraged you more, "the bombing will begin in five minutes" from Reagan or Bush's physical comedy act of looking under the table for WMDs? Some of us still feel a sense of deep respect for the office, even if we don't agree with the person filling it. You needed to warn me on that one. Now I've got diet coke in my sinuses A very brief search will show how much respect you have for the office when Obama's in it.
  15. Why would we make any? It was an insensitive comment. But I'm glad to hear that your tolerance level for such comments is very low. I'll be sure to remember that for future reference. Unless of course you're simply not allowing a crisis to go to waste for political gamesmanship's sake.
  16. Some historians believe that it was Benjamin Franklin who proffered "one nation over Satan, but that was a real turkey.
  17. I can think of no other product or service that I receive where the provider can't tell me how much it costs. They could save money if the insurers would simply send a bill like every one else in the world, one that doesn't say "this is NOT a bill" and "you MAY owe". I had major surgery last year and after everything was paid out they still made money off of me and my employer. And when I saw what my doctor was actually paid for the surgery I was tempted to send him a tip. He was robbed.
  18. It's about as worn out as the bickering between Abraham's kids as to who is the favorite.
  19. One reason is that simply paying for it doesn't address one of the primary problems, that being that it's too expensive. More than $0.25 on each health care dollar goes to administrative expenses. Taking that into consideration let me ask everyone a question. In your experiences with health care, what aspect of it would you complain about most?
  20. Pick up a few orders of ShamWows, I think they send extras and they'd be a great compliment to the rippers. But there's really no need, you got me with the spray on hair! I'll order by midnight tonight!
  21. I swear, I heard this exact same pitch on TV a few nights ago from that way too happy looking REO Speedwagon guy But seriously, I think it would be a nice thing to have. One less potential headache. We talked about it at our DZ last weekend but I haven't actually heard any of the music that was chosen by our DZO. (I fear it may be a cross between "Chariots of Fire" and Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood".)
  22. I recall hearing a few months ago about one bank in Spain that was apparently not impacted by the current crisis. One of the bank representatives that was interviewed stated something along the lines of "if we didn't understand the financial instruments being utilized then we didn't get involved in the transaction". Weird philosophy huh?
  23. Thanks Marg. With the very little bit of research that I did I had found out that it was not as it was presented in the opinion piece. Thanks for the elucidation, it's much more useful than market forces vs. "socialism" stick poking that was my contribution. I'm sure I'll do it again though. I'm weak.
  24. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about if we just leave it to private market forces to sort it out. [/stir pot]
