My seven year old daughter has already missed two of the first three days of school. She has a fever, but they don't know what is causing it. Yesterday, it was time for a new dose of Advil. When I entered her room, she remarked on her warm back. I took her temp - 106.2! I almost had a stroke. I took it again and it was the same. I took mine - 98.1. I took my son's 99.7. She felt like fire. I put her in the tub and gave her a cool bath and the Advil. Got her temp down to 103.3. Got her out of the tub and dried her off - temp went back up to 105.4. I ended up taking the thermometer with me to Nighttime Pediatrics. Once the Advil took effect, her temp came down to 102.3. Before yesterday, I'd never seen a temp of more than 104.8 (that scared me to death) when she had pneumonia. What's the highest fever you (your kids) have ever had? Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

Sorry you had a difficult first day - it sounds like as the day went on things got better. My son started high school yesterday and my daughter went off to second grade. I was relieved that I'd have 5 hours each day to recover from the other 19. I look at my son - now six feet tall - and wonder where my little boy went. He was sweet and adorable until he was about ten and then he started getting a major attitude. The middle school years were very difficult. Enjoy them while they are little! Imagine reading them as they came out! It was an eternity between books! I agree about the last book - it was a little disappointing. Have you seen the movies? Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

Glad to hear that you escaped without a major injury. The PLF saved me from serious injury on jump 7. I flared at about 25 feet. The instructor came across the radio. PLF! PLF! PLF! I held the flare, did a PFL and managed to standup and walk afterward. Unfortunately, my ability to stand was short lived. I broke my right ankle and sprained my left. Had I not done a PLF, my injuries would have been considerably worse. For awhile, I landed all my jumps with a PLF. I just recently started standing them up. Students should be encouraged to practice the PLF in favorable conditions so they will know how to do one when they have a hard landing. If you are new and you are standing up all your landings, don't be fooled. Eventually, you will have a hard landing. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

LOL ~ I wish! Actually, they are removable and reducible. However, it will cost about $8,000 and my insurance will not cover the surgery unless I weigh 132 lbs (or less). Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

Oh...I failed to mention that 20 of it is in my chest - I'm very top heavy. Does that need to be factored in??? Seriously though, I am starting to learn the questions that I need to ask. I'm not ready to commit to a canopy yet - I'm a little behind the curve. I broke my ankle on jump 7 - had weather issues and did some recurrency jumps. I think in another 20 I'll be ready to move down to the 210. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

After a couple of days in Vegas, I had collected 31,762 flyers with naked women available for my pleasure. What a waste of paper ~ if I want to see boobs I can look at my own! I tried to explain this to the men that were distributing the flyers, but they looked at me like I was speaking some sort of foreign language. They just kept saying something weird "No habla Ingles". Whatever... My room was completely filled with an assortment of these flyers. There really wasn't anywhere left to sleep - so I rented a car and went to stay on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was a breathtaking drive (about six hours). Excellent place to wake up in the morning! Maybe if I had stayed at the Wynn, I would have had plenty of space for all the flyers! Thanks Tami! I really wish we could have stayed longer too. I managed to get home 8 minutes before I had to be here to take my son to band camp! Nate was about 10 minutes late to work - not a big deal
-
I agree Nate - going on the big way was awesome! I can't believe they let us come along. It was a little further for me (about 15 minutes - so 2 hours 45 minutes), but it was well worth the drive. Everyone was very friendly! I will definitely be back. I'd like to try to figure out a way to make Wednesday my regular jumping day. If I didn't have to worry about getting my children off to school, it would be a piece of cake! Where do we deposit the beer we owe? It was very nice meeting everyone. Tami, Scotty, Kevin, Al (from the rental shop), Nicole (from manifest), etc. I wish I could remember all the names I'm not sure who found my goggles on the plane - thanks for that. I'm also not sure who offered to let me borrow goggles when I discovered I'd lost mine - thanks - even though I didn't use them, I still owe you a beer You'll have to tell me who you are so I can buy you one! See you soon! Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

Sorry - missed that earlier. I'm a "big girl". I'm 5'8" and my weight fluctuates from 152-162 - depending on the season. I'm an oddity - I actually weigh more in the summer because I don't have time to exercise. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

I did fine with the Spectre 230 that I rented in DeLand. I came back to my DZ and rented a Spectre 230 and I'm having trouble with my landings. I going to start adding the canopy characteristics (stall point, etc) to my log book so I will have a reference. Jumping rental gear a various locations makes learning more difficult. When I'm ready, there is a Sabre 2 - 210 waiting for me to try - a friend is going to lend it to me after she gets her new rig. So, I won't have to rent much longer. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

It may take me awhile to read all this great information! I didn't realize that the weight recommendations varied from canopy to canopy. I thought a 230 was the same across the board. I have so much to learn! I really appreciate the fact that people with experience are willing to help us find our way through this sport. Without you guys, we'd be totally lost. Thanks again! Thanks! I'll follow the link and check it out! Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

I'm still renting gear. At my DZ, there are two 230's available, I keep renting the same rig because the container doesn't leave bruises on my body. I've been told that I need to learn to land the 230 before I downsize. I've been renting a Spectre 230, and I'm not sure what type of canopy is in the other container. Yesterday, I went to a different DZ and rented a Silhouette 230. The gentleman behind the counter told me that it would be easier for me to flare. It was so much easier. We only got three jumps in, but two were standup landings. How did he know the Silhouette would be better for me? I feel like I can't slow the Spectre down - could the brake lines be to long for me? Did you DL it and print it out? Why are people reluctant to spend $25 on a book that has so much valuable information? Skydiving is an expensive sport and in the grand scheme of things $25 is a drop in the bucket. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

ditto! I'm married to a guy that makes six figures, but he is miserable. When we got married, we were so poor we didn't have a phone for four months. At some point, we got a note from one of his creditors - it said, "WELL?" in big letters. Oh...the good old days! Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...
-
"Why are they dirt poor?" If they are dirt poor because they are sending money home to their parents or helping their friends, that's acceptable. if they are dirt poor because they are paying their way through college, that's acceptable. If they are dirt poor because they lack motivation to find a job, then why on earth would anyone date them? Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

I'm sure my feelings about the SIM are influenced by the fact that I've always had one - I got mine before my first AFF jump. It surprises me that many dropzones and instructors pass over using something that could greatly benefit their students. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

I didn't have any difficulty following the SIM nor did my fellow students. It was presented to us right from the beginning and we were encouraged to get a copy. It's unfortunate that the SIM isn't more widely used. It contains so much useful information. Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

I asked this in another thread and got no reply. At Orange, the SIM is a bible. Is the SIM used at your dropzone as part of the training program? Are students encouraged to buy the SIM? I'm just curious. I think it's great that USPA is trying to encourage people to progress conservatively, but if students aren't reading the SIM... Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

Will the people that really need to read this section even look at the new SIM? Do they use the SIM at every DZ? I've been to a few DZs, but I only saw students with the SIM at Orange. It's almost like a bible. Maybe the USPA should require that all AFF students purchase a copy of the SIM. Dropzones could include the price of it in the first jump. It's only $25. This could be a marketing tool. Leaving your first AFF jump with a SIM, might influence people to come back for a second jump, etc. I know the SIM can be downloaded, but having a book in your hand is very different than being able to find the information online. And recommendations...are recommendations. Too bad the USPA can't work with canopy manufactures to make purchase requirements. Such as - you have to hold a specific license before you can purchase a high performance canopy. Or make a regulation or something that would actually prevent people from downsizing too quickly.
