    Aleksei Nemov

I kind of agree, but i kind of don't. To the letter of the law, yes the result was correct, Hamm did a good routine inch perfect and was scored for it. However, if this is the way competitions are to be scored from now on, there will be no development in the sport because it will not pay anyone to do it. Gymnastics evolves because start values get degraded and i think thats what should have happened here, people doing a single release and a fairly safe routine should NOT get a 10.0 start value. That should be reserved for the people who are strong, skilful and brave enough to do 4 Katchevs in a row, immediately followed by a ginga (never could spell those)! But this is an argument that pops up evey time to some extent or another so i don't expect it will ever really be solved. On the plus side, they are all superhuman and very impressive (I used to do a bit of H bar and i know how hard it is just to swing round a few times), and huge credit to the Hamm brother who went after Nemov and managed to block out the disruption. I did think the Italian deserved to win though Never try to eat more than you can lift
  2. Just to give a bit of positive feedback, a while ago i had a problem with my Neptune so i posted to see if I was doing something wrong. Lara from Alti-2 PM'd me with a couple of suggestions, and now she has replaced the entire unit FOC, and better still, did it custom coloured with a yellow face and translucent blue back. Oh - and there were some free lens protector thingies in the package as well!! Never try to eat more than you can lift
  3. Yeah i thought that might be the case. so if you are a gymnast, fancy trying that launch i saw on video of a guy doing forward giants round a high bar set up on the edge of a cliff (europe i think) and then letting go just as he came over the top?! Bit contrived but very cool! Never try to eat more than you can lift
  4. Good work - thats a nice setup if you can get hold of one. I love the pit, used to practce triple fronts off a trampette into a pit, until i did 3 and a half and landed on my head It might be a nice foamy pit but but i still damn near broke my nose. (glad my students didn't see that one! ) That launch of yours sounds really good - post the video when you get it and i'll critique your technique!!! Never try to eat more than you can lift
  5. Ok granted i haven't seen him for a year or five, but i'm still pretty happy!!!!! Never try to eat more than you can lift
  6. I am (well was really!) a qualified Gymnastics coach. I would suggest that the best thing to get involved in is trampolining - it will teach you the spatial awareness and how your body works for twists and somersaults and all that kind of stuff without the months and years of pain and conditioning required to do this stuff on the floor/ vault/ high board. And incidentally, most high divers use trampolines for training. I'd say its like the equivalent of the wind tunnel for them! My gym used to have a mix of gymnasts, high divers, snowboarders and breakdancers training there! One thing to bear in mind though, is that the skills may not be that transferable. I don't base jump (yet ) but when i learn't to backloop in skydiving, i was taught to do it in a way that would be COMPLETELY wrong for a gymnast - unless they have a fetish for half somersaults (ouch) I can see how it would be more applicable to base though as its more about the exit, n'est ce pas? 9. Agreed - i liked it as well. its good in that any of the chapters can be read in isolation - there are sections on psychology, technique, aerodynamics, gear, safety etc. Nice one Brian - has some nice quotes in it too from some alternative sources!!!! Never try to eat more than you can lift
  10. Are the brakelines very slack when they are up at the keepers (after you have released them from the half brake setting)? If so there may be a little leeway for your club rigger/instructor to shorten them to make it easier to stall (I wouldn't do this myself without checking and supervision). Otherwise i'm with the others - you either need to take a wrap or use rear risers, but like was said before, rear risers will stall quite quickly and you need to check with your instructor whether this is a good idea for you. 11. Brian Germain has a similar guideline in his book - WNE (Wingload never exceed) table. He also talks about the smaller canopy issue - i.e., you cannot directly scale canopies. ie. a 135 does not fly like 135/170ths of a 170 (Sorry if that doesn't make any sense, i know what i am trying to say but work is numbing my brain!) He also talks about altitude and a number of other factors. WELL worth a read if you get the chance - chapters on psychology, canopy design, tchnique and a host of other stuff. I spent 4 hours on weather hold yesterday reading it and now i want to read it again because there was SO much info. Never try to eat more than you can lift
