1) knife. i don't know anything about knives, so without doing any homework, i would bring the knife that bear grylls uses, that thing takes a beating. if it still only counts as one item, i would want the knife to come in a sheath with a sharpening stone. 2) 550 cord. 1500 foot roll doesn't take up much room and you could make a net out of the inner strings if you were inclined. 3) blue tarp. i would want as big of a tarp as i could fit in the duffle bag. obviously it could waterproof a shelter, but it could also be used for water storage, solar still, and you could even put sea water on a piece of it and let it evaporate and now you've got sea salt to make your food taste better. i'm sure there are many other uses too. 4) canteen. i would want to aluminum canteen with the cup thing that fits on the bottom if that only counts as one item. if it counts as two items, then i would just take the cup. it would be nice3 to have something to boil water in. 5) tinted swimming goggles. these could act as sunglasses out of water, but would be very helpful in procuring food in the water. honerable mention) box of assorted fish hooks. i wouldn't replace any of the above items with this, but it sure would be nice to have. i'm recovering from the swine flu. the body aches sucked. today was the first day i've exercised since the 10th. i still don't fell even close to 100%. there was one day i didn't even get out of bed. fortunately my wife was off work that day. the next day i would have stayed in bed too, but with three kids to look after, it just wasn't an option. the bummer is that i have a triathlon this saturday and last week was supposed to be my most intense training week, so i feel your pain with reguard to the workouts. this week i'm just doing light workouts just to guage where i'm at. i'm afraid to do anything intense and have a relapse. at this point i'm just hoping to be healthy enough to race this weekend, my time goal went out the window.
