The part that pisses me off is that this idiot could screw up a lot of the work that has been done to keep the local DZOs comfortable with having wingsuiters on the DZ. A Washington DZ just banned wingsuiters for safety reasons. The guy obviously doesn't have an understanding of how to control the larger wings, so there is the issue of staying closed up on exit. The unneeded reserve ride could easily lead to an off landing and depending on the DZ, the DZO is already pissed at us for not being able to land on the airport with a good main. I am torn between trying the stay nice approach and help him see the error of his ways or the you fucked up and what the hell were you thinking approach and embarrass the shit out of him. The scarey part is that I don't think either way will sink in. And Dave, it's been about 5 years since I flew that Prodigy. I think it might be fun to show these new kids what can be done with on old skool suit and experience. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

Here's one situation that I would like to get some honest feedback. A well thought out smart ass remark is welcome as well. Sub 200 jump number jumper wants to learn to wingsuit. Gets told to come back at 200 jumps. Finds SM1 for sale in his size and buys it. Gets warned that is not a beginner suit. He says he will put it away until gets enough jumps in smaller suit. Finally achieves the required 200 and gets some training from another coach. Seems to do ok, but gets told he needs to work on better pitch of PC. Borrows an appropriate beginner suit and makes somewhere between 6-10 total jumps, including FFC. Then decides to jump the SM1 and has line twists resulting in cut away. When questioned about it, said the suit size wasn't the issue, it was the canopy's fault.(Sabre2 190 loaded around 1.2) So, how do you respond to this jumper after he lied about putting suit away and arguing that his skills were not contributory but canopy was at fault for the reserve ride? *edited to appease grammar nazi 50 donations so far. trying to figure out if skydiving is for me
monkycndo replied to md202089's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We have made a sport out of an emergency procedure. It isn't for everyone. But there is only one way to truly know if it is right for you. My dad was a private pilot. I grew up at the airport, in and around small airplanes. My first jump was a tandem and second was AFF level 1 out of a Cessna 206. Even with all the time in small planes, I suffered from sweaty palms and butterflies in my stomach during my early jumps. At first, I called it nerves. But it really depends on how you look at it. A wise lady told me the trick was to get the butterflies to all fly in the same direction. I will still get a butterfly or two in my stomach and my palms still sweat a bit. The difference is that now I look forward to that feeling because I think of it as anticipation of the fun I am about to have and it means I am totally focused on the jump. I started learning more about how the gear worked as soon as I could. Having that gear knowledge helped me be even more comfortable about relying on it. A great way to learn is to go to the DZ and after jumping is over for the day, hang out and just talk to the jumpers. That is where I learned so much that you just can't get out of a book. Good luck on your AFF. -

WORD I pack my d-bag the same way I do my sleeping bag. Just keeping shoving fabric in the bag until you can close the flap. It's worked so far. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity -

So you think licenses overall are a waste of time/money? Maybe that's worth a thread in and of itself - I'd be curious to hear your arguments against them (besides "waste of time" because that doesn't tell me much). And don't forget the DZs that require an actaul license of a certain type to land at a tighter landing area, to be eligible to do beach landings or jump helos/balloons, and maybe even be able to jump at a very cool resort type boogie. Yep, licenses are completely useless. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

I'm a regular apherisis donor. *points down to sig line* Also over 3 gallons of regular blood dotations since I started in high school. Was on the blood drive committee there and college as well. Can't donate for a while since I was at the Nicaragua boogie. I just got a call from the donor center and as soon as I picked up, the scheduler said "ooops, looks like you are deffered, sorry about this call". I would get a call every 14 days reminding me about my appointment. It was funny because their number is blocked, but I recognized her voice immediately. It takes a bit more time to donate platelets verses whole blood, but it is worth it since a certain group of women are disqualified, we men can step up and carry some of that load. I had to laugh because when my test results came back on my platelet count and the numbers were real high, the scheduler said "Baby, you won't be donating blood anymore and you are all mine". Let's just say she is a bit possesive of her regular donors. Even if you only donate once a year, it will make a huge difference if everyone would join in. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. Love that picture. As a kid, the house right across the street had a bit of an uphill driveway. We would put a plywood ramp at the bottom right at the curb. With a spotter checking for cars, we would ride our BigWheels down the driveway, hit the ramp and get some air, then go zooming across the street into our driveway doing a power slide to slow down. Kids now adays are wussies. -correction- Parents now adays are wussies. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

So I take it that since this is in a skydiving forum, I will need to wear my PPE when I do my next jump? Hardhat with newly required chin strap, safety glasses, respirator (due to all the farting on the plane), ear plugs, steel toe boots, seat belt incase I use a forklift during the jump, and a weekly tailgate meeting that everyone signs in for to prove attendance. Works for me. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

N00B On a long spot! What to do what to do!
monkycndo replied to shah269's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you are getting pushed back and are not sure that you will land on, another option to see what is behind you is to turn 90 degrees and crab crosswind. You won't be blown so far downwind and can turn more quickly back into the wind if the winds die as you lose altitude. We had a discussion in Nicaragua about what is the best way to lose altitude to prevent being blown back as far. Spiral down or double fronts? Unless you can get the canopy heading straight down at the ground, spiraling down will have the canopy facing into the wind for only 1/4th of the time in the air. The rest will be crabbing and flying with the wind. Not the most effective way to fight being blown back. Double fronts will help you lose altitude while still facing into the wind. Collapse the slider, hang on fronts and get small. If you are flying such a lightly loaded canopy, pay more attention to the uppers and maybe ask the pilot what the winds are doing during the climb to altitude so you don't find yourself in this situation. 50 donations so far.
