  5. Well, if you know someone looking for a really nice 42 stitch center start stop mechanical (Juki 984), send them my way. Had a line on a Juki 1900 series that slipped through my fingers. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

  7. So, I am a self described gear whore and like to know how things work. So it would only make sense to start learning a bit about rigging. So I went out and got a little household sewing machine to be able to get some experience on pushing a needle into fabric. Well, once you start, you start to realize that a household machine just doesn't like taking a big needle and trying to push it through several layers of webbing. So I asked for some suggestions on a good starter machine. Maybe a straight/zigzag machine. Life is good. But then you realize that having to adjust tension and stitch length from straight to zigzag after you get the machine dialed in for straight stitch sux. So you look for a second machine so you can have one for straight and one for zigzag. Ok, now you are cooking. But then you start getting fed up with how the bottom feed machines cause the slippery fabric to get pulled through unevenly and you get bunching. So you look for a walking foot machine. Man, remarkable how nice those patches are when the fabric gets pulled through sooo smoooothly. But then it hits you how much a double needle walking foot with a 3/16" gauge spacing would be the cat's meow for all things holy and unholy. So, are you sure you want to buy that household machine? 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

  10. When I first tried packing a Wings, it was a pain in the ass to get the lines in the keeper. Then I realized I was stowing the toggles and line in the wrong order. Put the upper tab through the cat's eye and keeper. Next put the excess brake line in the keeper on the back side of the riser. Only then stow the lower toggle keeper. Having the lower toggle keeper stowed makes the elastic for the lines much tighter. Problem solved. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity
  11. When I was researching what machine to start with, I was told by quite a few folks a 20U is a good first machine. Readily available at a good price and parts are cheap. It took some help, but got the machine dialed in on E thread. Sews like a champ. Yes, getting the tension right will take some tweeking, but it can be done. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. 16. Grimmie, would love to stop and jump at your DZ again, but this is a power through and get it done drive. Taking I-15 would be too far out of the way and I have no want or need to see my old stomping grounds. It will be the Grapevine both ways. Current plan is I-5 to 210, then I-10 to at least Indio. Either turn south by Salton Sea to I-8, or just stay I-10 all the way. Going the Salton Sea route cuts the hilly portion east of Alpine if I took I-8 all the way from SD. It has been a while since I have driven either I-10 or I-8 through the desert. The north route saves about 30 miles, but I remember that being a hard hilly drive. The south route is longer, but IIRC, the hills are not as steep, just a long continuous haul. So, which do you suggest between the two plans? Either way, I'll be bypassing SD proper. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity
  17. I've been on Gasbuddy.com looking at fuel prices along the way and determining the best locations to fuel up. I like hitting Costco because they tend to have good prices and the Costco Amex card earns year end cash back. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity
  18. So, I am looking for some advice from folks that have done this trip in a large, gas guzzling vehicle. I will be driving Jerome the Motor Home from the Bay Area to Eloy for Nationals. Still haven't made up my mind if I want to take Highway 10 all the way from the LA area or drop down to Highway 8 going by way of the Salton Sea. My decision lies around not having to pull too many hills and get even poorer gas mileage than the 7.5mpg average Jerome gulps down. I know going by way of HWY 8 is a few miles longer, but if memory serves me, there are fewer hills between Yuma-Eloy on 8 compared to Indio-Eloy on 10. Any info/suggestions appreciated. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

  20. In the rules of listing in the Incident forum, it includes the line below: In case of a fatality please post your condolences to the Talkback forum and keep this forum for discussion. That is a bit outdated as Talkback is now Bonfire and we have the Blue Skies forum for condolences. Maybe that line could be freshened up. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. 22. Specifically what, exactly, did I say was incorrect? I never said cameras weren't a potential distraction. I never said there weren't potential entanglement risks. I never even once said or even implied that those risks do not apply to me. I just asked why the approach to correcting or minimizing these camera-related risks is so drastically different than the much more positive and extremely effective initial delivery chosen for every other aspect of skydiving advice? What you did say was, So, let me see if I get your point. You feel that the experienced old farts with many more jumps than these inexperienced jumpers should fall in line with the "newer crowd" and just disregard why the SIM has the list of things that a jumper should have prior to jumping a camera. And these experienced and wise jumpers should actually condone or even assist the newer crowd bypass these steps even though there is plenty of evidence doing so is a less than smart idea. How did I do? Yes, methodology does make a difference in training/educating. Assisting someone to improve is almost always received well and appreciated. Not nearly so much when being told they shouldn't do something that other people can. But if you step back and look at it from the old fart's perspective, after gently telling the umteeth member of the "newer crowd" about the SIM and that putting a camera on their head at XX jumps is not a sound idea, and basically being told "hey old fart, I know what I am doing. I just turn it on and forget about it, I only use it to document my jumps", said antiques get tired and might use a different approach. I have been training and coaching for a few years myself, in both skydiving and work. I am not above learning from anyone, no matter their limited experience level, if they can give me a new method of getting the point across to someone. So I ask a favor. Could you assist me with a way to help this "newer crowd" understand that the SIM does actually apply to them? Because using a soothing voice to explain, yet, once again, that they don't fully grasp that they don't know what they don't know sure the hell doesn't seem to be working. I'm all ears.
