The following is coming from a tightwad cheapskate and moderate environmentalist: My brother used to work for Patagonia and this is what they determined when looking at total costs of producing their t-shirts, both short and long term. The costs listed are from about 8 years ago. The average high quality t-shirt uses 1 pound of raw cotton and 3/4 of a pound of chemical fertilizer and pesticides to grow that cotton. Then add in all the chlorine to make that cotton brilliant white. Next treat the fabric with an agent to make it ready for dyeing. Now dye that perfectly white fabric some other color and apply some printing. The cost for the consumer of a domestically produced t-shirt would be around $15. But, if the consumer were to pay upfront all the future clean up costs of those chemicals due to the environmental damage to the soil and water, the cost of that shirt would be in the $30-40 range. And I'm not talking the higher profit margins of boutique/ big name brands. Just food for thought. Patagonia has since gone to organic unbleached cotton with natural dyes where possible and have worked with the cotton producers to create naturally grown colored cotton varieties. Took a nice long break from the real world. Then moved to a new city and got a McJob to pay the bills. A friend knew of an open position that I had not done before but figured I was qualified. It mostly required good attention to detail and common sense. Got the job and started taking classes as the responsibilities increased and required more knowledge.
