In the presence of gross studity my wife sometimes just shakes her head and say "fuck me!, and they let those people drive and breed" she believes you should be able to get through a basic IQ test before you are allowed to do either.....Atilla the Hen she is regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

You've cited nothing unique to third-world nations. Perhaps this is why in our inner cities, gun control is about as effective as it is in those third-world countries... Ya think?!" ****************************** Actually no. I was talking about societies/cultures and not being selective about taking sections that suit my argument. The point came from an initial comment about why someone excluded 3rd world stats when comparing US to other countries. If you beleive that the US in analagous to the 3rd world thats fine, I thought there may have been more pride over there, and when I have visited the US I didnt feel greatly at risk.... BTW do you travel outside the US much? regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

If gun control supposedly works, why should it not work in third-world countries? basic things like rule of law, basic import/export /border controls, prevalence of bribery and corruption, desperation of the populace, low value of human life .... things arent great in the US but 3rd world comparison are frankly ridiculous regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

a thoughtful person who think about risks and makes choices accordingly would probably, long term, make a good and safe skydiver. oh and by the way , its actually about 10 times better that you are imagining regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

Hypothetical.... Your under canopy....
yarpos replied to ToTheTop's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I tried in air rigging on a spinning main once, lost track of time , ended up cutting away and having about 5 seconds under my reserve. So for skydives its a no brainer to me. Congrats on your actions and your thoughfullness in continuing to think it all through and ask questions. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was -

until the next one? the odds are greatly reduced but anything is possible I guess. The +ve thing is that an attempt has been made to limit the liklehood substantially. I worry less about the criminal element as they have different motivations, and to a large extent plug one another which is a benefit to our society and the gene pool. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

no I really cant say that. all I can say is that criminal related violence remains on a steady trend. the incident that triggered it all off was the Port Arthur massacre , in which 30+ people were killed by a deranged guy somebody thought it was OK to sell milspec auto rilfles to. If we dont have more of those I guess its a success of a kind and just a pain in the arse for us law abiding gun owners. I have noticed a more educated stance by press and the local politicians in my State. When the last criminal incident happened the bleeding hearts came out demanding tighter gun controls. The response was "the weapon was unlicensed in the hands of a known crminal, what would changing the law do?" regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

what is being argued/discussed exactly? does anyone really think there is a magic answer to this? Personally I think the US is so far gone regarding gun ownership you just have to live with it now. In my country the have tried a multi layered approach (a bit like good computer security) you need to have no criminal, psych history, reference from two people that you are a rational person, must be a member of a club, must complete a set number of competitions and practices per year. It forces engagement with others and stops camouflage wearing loonies sitting at home alone dribbling and stroking their guns from not being visible till they go batshit (postal? in the US?). Does it work? up to a point....all the legal gun owners are really well controlled ....but criminals still shoot each other and others. Overall gun ownership is down due to a confiscation / buyback program....but again not many criminals lined up to hand over there firearms to the police. The politicians and the bleeding hearts feel safer , in reality we have disarmed the law abiding in favour of criminals and the stats show it. Luckily we live (in relative terms) in a fairly safe society. If we had a Chicago like culture I would be one of the few average people equipped (illegally, as we have no legal carry for civilans) to defend myself. Back to the US, frankly I think your are dreaming or pissing into the wind if you think you can manage what has been created. The genie is well out of the bottle. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

BTW I disgree with your sig line....arch before you leave (punch)...... later is too late.,,,but thats another discussion regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

there is no one answer...with experience you get better at this....now we have mutiple tools, eyes, audibles, altimeters but we can still make mistakes...its part of the sport. And then of course there are night jumps. I can assure you its pretty stomach churning to see the same altitude again when in freefall after admiring the city lights for a while.....arrrggh!!! this was olden days before audibles when an alti was all you had at night apart from your sense of time, if it was a dark night. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

like john mitchell above for me it was flat spins...changed DZs...... new instructor said "jeeezzz bloke , your body position is perfect but you fall like a sheet of plywood...you wont get anywhere unless you relax ...a lot" He was right of course and it remains the key element of our sport, to fly with precison and in a relaxed state , while being naturally amped up by whats going on. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

you may percieve it to be your freedom, but if you go in because you freely made a decision it actually does affect others. Setting aside family, there is an impact on everyone there, especially the DZO that has to deal with the mess. Its not something that most people get used to. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

congrats to all I keep thinking of the 80+ people and their 5 way....how absolutley cool is that? much respect regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

basic answer is yes, simliar size reserve smaller options later...maybe...if you feel the need and once you build experience , skill and understand better the risks you are taking by going down that path....a path which is really really unecessary right now regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

A step through should be picked up in a simple line check shouldnt it? Packing a step through should be completly avoidable, and is just a symptom of being slack or not trained properly ... which has consequences regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

Who'da thunk? Guns best crime deterrent after all

errrr.....AR15, Kalashnikovs, 50 cals etc etc are not popguns....many of the US joe publics are extremely expert regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was -
Surprised that your question hasnt started the usual religious war of words about which rig is best, especially starting the topic off with a Racer which people seem very opinionated about. Personally I think they are fine rigs and voted with my $ for many years. Re canopies: yes as long as the sizing match is good normal canopies can interchange between rigs (note: that this is a safety issue so until you have more experience it should be checked with your instructor/rigger...not, looks good to me , lets go) regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

thats funny coming from a jumper......do the sums on some of those wonderful jump ships that haul our arses/asses to altitude we happily fork out this and more ..... regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
yarpos replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
mmmmmm.....like tom said.......Cobra 10.....blew 2 up, never more than 10 jumps each in my case......never could land that bastard comfortably at 1.1:1 anyway. Traded over to a Comet (7 cell, F111) which , for the day, was an excellent all round canopy. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was -
Intentional cutaway: advisable? accessible?
yarpos replied to LittleOne's topic in Safety and Training
Hi I think its a great idea. It does give you that extra bit of experience and familiarity when it comes around for real. I went through this process and thought it helped later when it mattered. Not sure why you would want to disconnect the skyhook. Yes it will beat you but you get the same experience when you chop and pull. If its on its way out already, its no big deal. enjoy regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was -
why prefer them?....because like 3 rings they are proven technology they fail, like many other things on our rigs, if they arent checked and maintained. If you look after them they have a proven history of working. if people cant or wont check and maintain their own gear (regardless of new or old config options) badness generally follows. For a while when we start we are in the hands of others, but eventually its up to the individual to do these small things to ensure they save themselves on each jump. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
