  1. Dont know if its practical or affordable in your case, but one thing I did before I ever had a real malfunction was to do a practice cutaway with a spare reserve on board. I just wanted to have the experience and wanted to verify my reserve/weight choice was OK. Later on when I had more jumps and eventually things got sporty on a couple of them I had no second thoughts on reserve use. I have no clue if it would have been an issue anyway but I do know that I felt more at ease and knowledgeable about my gear after I had used all of it. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  2. dumb? no , just creative...and in true oz tradition he managed to involve alcomahol somehow. He will no doubt shortly be taking a tax payer funded study tour to complete cultural exchange meetings in NY with your aptly named Mr Weiner. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  3. The key word being wounded. and scarred, and traumatized .... really the place for semantics about how deep a knife goes? regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  4. all but a small % have been various flavours of crap on the first/intial jumps....everything is new, senses overloaded. If you want it keep at it, but try to stop, breath , relax. Pretty much nothing in skydiving works if you are tense and trying to hard. easiest thing in the world to say relax, really hard to do at the time. Try to take a second before exit and after opening, breath, smile, try not to rev up too much regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  5. dont leave out the rest of the western world.....they voted for him? twice? regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  6. you say its their fear and they are dumping it on you.... who will pick up the pieces if at age 20 you end up paraplegic or similar? highly unlikely...but the dumping or fear/risk is not uni-directional. they probaly arent even thinking this way and are just expressing normal parents need to protect you.....it never goes away really. in the end you have to live your life and the parents willl cope anf probably come to admire it and brag about it. I never knew my mother lived in terror of me not returning from skydiving/motocross till 30 years later regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  7. i was on a load once where the pilot became ill and was semi conscious about half way to altitude ... the immediate response from a pom ( person from england) near the door was to say " I'm going for help!!" and bail. In the following 20 secs the remaining 7 out of 10 of us went for help (inc. me) ...2 of the more caring souls stayed with the pilot. A brave move I thought in an old Beech. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  8. I'm Australian, and while I agree generally with Squeak, I would nominate New Zealand. To me, unbeatable for quality of life. Better than Oz? yep I reckon it is. The only limitation is small economic scale and therefore (relative to OZ for example) more limited employment/income opportunities. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  9. dunno....you would have to ask him.... watching him get a large base canopy into a normal skydive rig, the bag seemed to provide more control to do the job...which was quite a squeeze. He was wingsuiting with it at the time. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  10. bigger than 230, f111, 7 cells....arent you describing a BASE canopy? seen at least one person here jumping a bagged BASE canopy in large Talon regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  11. another simple thing that will leave a white trail is talcum powder. Large size can with twist open shake out top, drill a few holes in the base , cover the holes with duct tape and double over one end to form a tab to tear off. Tape to foot/ankle. Just before exit twist top open and tear of the tab. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  12. yes, quantitative easing for the poor. the poor don't hoard money they spend it. the velocity of money increases and the economy starts to grow from the bottom up... isnt that against the great american , dog eat dog, to bad for you if you cant make it ethos? I imagine the reaction to injecting money at the bottom would be a whole lot of socialist/pinko/commie rants. the govt did what you are suggesting here when the GFC struck , including cash handouts to the lowest income earners. I'm not sure if there was a real benefit unless you were selling drugs, alcohol and cheap electronics. Still, as you say it got some money churning around when things looked very bleak. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  13. profits get spent eventually and become income for others ... is there a better plan out there ? regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  14. passed this on to my daughter....she does health and safety talks
  15. Last out of lead plane on a cessna formation load. On exit there is ... RIGHT THERE ... about 50ft below us, is the trailing C185 and its big chrome spinner and big propellor (that spinner is welded into my brain even now decades later ). Later the chase pilot said it looked like I came over the top of the prop and dropped past the windscreen and the wings leading edge. All I remember is thinking FUCK!!!!! and rolling into a ball, then just seeing ground, sky, ground, sky as I tumbled. Was very happy when I stabled out and all my arms and legs and stuff stayed on me. Really shook me up a bit when I started thinking about it. The lack of control and randomness of it got to me. Led to a lot of discussion about how we did formation loads. Sadly an almost identical incident was recorded in the US in about the same era, but with fatal results. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  16. there is a bit of concern being expressed about mixing tourists and crocodiles over here....all started by the pic on this page (scroll down below the embedded video): http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8271980/croc-stunt-pic-causes-concern-on-nt-river apparently this thing lost a leg in a fight.....would be interesting to see the size of whatever took its leg off regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

    TORCHWOOD

I'd give the septics points for Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits in the old days....really creative stuff for that era. Currently I like Supernatural (funny and I love that car) and True Blood. Do prefer the Brits for a gritty cop/crime show .... the US ones just seem to be full of people yelling over the top of one another and having turf wars with competing law enforcement groups. All gets a bit tedious. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  18. jeez your story has everything....extreme sports, lies, deceit, theft, sex(apparently), parenthood, earthquakes.....maybe sell the movie rights??? sorry your fits attempt at getting gear became a PITA. Enjoy the new arrival and maybe stay mainstream when next you get a chance get some of your own gear. lifes good though....you get to live in NZ regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  19. you get what you put up with regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  20. with awareness of what I was doing...about 1800ft trying to find some space after a biggish way that had no better break off plan than "its 4000ft ...save yourself!!" without awareness, about a 1000ft, just off student status... taking a 3 way low waiting for the flailing 4th member to close those last couple of feet... I doubt 4 canopies have ever opened so close and not collided, due to no more than dumb luck. regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
  21. thread resurrection time it seems I looked at twardos initial response about eating ramon.....I guess he meant ramen but eating ramon may earn some more jump money if he is generous budget? = available cash + available credit limit cost control? interesting concept which should be considered later regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was

  25. just ease any uncertainty, and as we are always a day ahead of you guys in the US.... when the world ends over here I will make a post just to let you know its coming....if we are always having your tommorrow that should work shouldnt it? or does god only keep west coast US time? in which case we get a day less life is so unfair regards, Steve the older I get...the better I was
