How do you find this out? GPS? Neptune? Regular altimeters don't have enough accuracy.
-
You didn't answer my question.
-
I'm not asking which turn method causes least altitude loss by itself (harness turn in 99% breaks, imho, is the absolute winner). I'm asking which turn method causes least altitude loss when doing compete transition from full flight to turn to full flight again. In other words, if you find yourself flying downwind a little low and still want to turn 180 into the wind and flare from full flight, what's the best, safest method to turn?
-
I'm confused. So, there are two methods, both start from going to half-brakes: 1. Turn by pulling the brake on the side you're turning to. and 2. Turn by releasing the brake on the side opposite to your turn. So which method gives the least altitude loss AFTER returning to full flight? So far some experimentation with flat turns gave me an impression that the loss of altitude is about the same as in "swinging turn" if we speak about "full flight -> turn -> full flight" maneuver.

I love horizontal flight, don't have a WS yet (Prodigy is coming ), so I'm just playing with tracking for now. I measured my tracks with GPS (Etrex Vista C) and got 1.4mi horizontally from 13.5K to 4.5K. This translates to about 0.8:1 glide ratio and average horizontal speed about 85mph. I was flying straight course 90 degrees to jump run, winds were low. No suit, just cotton hiking pants and a T-shirt. Just wondering what glide ratio is achievable by good trackers without any special aids? What angle of attack gives better glide?

Cute, but these pictures miss the perspective - it's not clear what's the length of the track relative to the ground features.

I want a transparent parachute & rig. Where can I buy one? Imagine: - you pull and appear to be flying in the air with no support - you can check pins just by looking - airport security won't give you hard time ever - you can see mold inside if you packed wet canopy and left it for a month - when you cutaway, you can visually check that cable cleared the housing - when you pack, you appear to be having sex with the floor - when you jump naked, you look completely naked I can only think of advantages of a transparent parachute!!!
-
On a serious note, have anyone ever jumped a transparent parachute? That would be cool to watch.

this is pure GOLD.......

And when you finish doing all this, you're a 60y.o. fart. You missed the best time by overpreparing. It's like saying you can't love somebody before you become financially secure, get in shape, write your will, etc. Better start small and safe than prepare for years and get hit by the car on your way to your first jump.

Have you done a NAKED skydive?!
veter_ replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
depends on penis. mine has about 10:1 dynamic range and in freefall is in stowed configuration -
"Shut up and jump!"

I did it on my combined 100th and 200th jump a week ago (skipped 100th jump in winter, too cold to jump naked). It was fun!!! It was chilly at altitude, and the stick shrinked to about 1 inch There was no problem sitflying naked. Another skydiver who was sitflying below me said he saw a giant hole in the sky. Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Newbie wants to know what to log?
veter_ replied to fmmobley's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
lol, I agree. once I reached 200 jumps, I stopped logging them. why log your life, just live it! -
Manifest. Jump tickets. 20+ people crammed in the elevator sitting on each other's balls. Hop-n-pops. Anonymous farts and screams "Door!!!" Hmm.. isn't it just a regular DZ?

Interesting stuff. I spent a few years solving 2nd-order partial differential equations (studying superconducting vortices). I used fast C++ code to crunch numbers and MATLAB to visualize the data. The difference between superconductivity and BASE aerodynamics, I guess, is that there's almost nothing a piece of toilet paper won't tell you about the latter.

Thanks for posting this, Han. I'll come some day.

Where can I buy such a case? (My shopping skills suck

achowe: constantly. openings are OK. Ian: if I don't find the reason, I will contact PD, but this is already the second problem with Spectre's in a row: my previous Spectre 210 was consistently slamming me on openings, this 190 is a replacement. piisfish: risers are equal, body symmetrical (well, I have to lean all the way to right riser to compensate for the turn), now, holes... I don't know, but that's a good point, I'll check them next weekend.
-
Additional info: - effect is more pronounced when I loosen chest strap - tightening right leg strap by 1/2" more than left partially compensates the turn
-
I've got a new Spectre 190 which tends to turn left by itself at a rate of about 10 degrees per second. My rigger checked the lines, the trim is perfect. Leg straps are tight and even. To compensate for the turn, I have to either shift all my weight to right leg or pull right toggle to shoulder. This is not only annoying, but also costs me some flare power as even on the final approach I have to compensate for the turn. Nobody can figure out what's wrong. Any ideas?
-
Thanks, Lou. How do you mount Vista on your chest strap?
-
Another question: if you mount GPS on your chest, does it see satellites? Did anyone try to mount Etrex Vista on your chest and see the altitude vs. distance plot in real time?
