  1. I don't think 6:1 is possible without wings extending beyond human body dimensions (that is, without rigid wing, which is not a wingsuit). Glide ratio is limited by the shape of human body. This is explained well in Robert Pecnik's Wingsuit Aerodynamics 2 at phoenix-fly.com. Probably, 3:1 is about theoretical limit.
  2. Here's something funny: I did my first rodeo with my friend, we kept stable for 4000 feet, then flipped, and as he bailed, he accidentally cutaway my wings. When I landed, Neptune showed 138mph at 12K and 9K. We fell like a rock! 450lbs of meat on small wings... We probably didn't move an inch horizontally Maybe next time we try to invite sitflyers to our "rodeo"
  3. "No, Sir, I'm just a sleepwalker, and my doctor prescribed wearing a parachute when I go to bed as a safety measure."
  4. I did tell about my adventures to several whuffos, and got them smiling, too! It looks like stories about flying like a bird get them more interested and less defensive than the stories about regular freefall. Perhaps, they think it's more safe
  5. Eric, when are you going to be at the Ranch next time? Mike Shatalov and I will probably fly together next weekend (he's flying GTi).
  6. Flew Prodigy on July 4th weekend, made my first 19 wingsuit jumps. Results: 1. Can't stop smiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Congrats Amanduh!!!

You probably don't remember me carrying you in my arms from DC-3 in Eloy, but already in love with me? Babe, I love you, too...
  8. I got 2320. Is this my BASE number?!
  9. What's the exit order when besides WS group there's a solo (beginner) flyer? What's the safe delay between the group and solo? And what's the safe flight plan?

  11. Bad, bad, bad... By showing to novices that landing on concrete is easy and safe, you may incourage them to try. The result can be disastrous. It takes 100-200 jumps for novices to finally dial in the flare, feel it and do it as second nature. Concrete does not forgive the miscalculated flare. Besides, there are often downdrafts coming from heated asphalt down the grass, making flare less effective or not working at all. On my 42nd jump, I miscalculated my landing and was coming towards the runway. "No problem", I thought, and flared. Flare did not slow down me at all (downdraft), and I hit the edge of runway at full speed, breaking tailbone and both wrists and losing a lot of blood.
  12. Just watched this story on CNN live, there's an injured jumper somewhere near Phoenix.

    Audible glide angle

Yes, variometers that cost $300 and up show the glide angle. (although I think they won't work at freefall speed). There are also vario+GPS combos. I use Mini-Vario (descent version) under canopy. It's a small device the size of protrack that beeps faster and in higher tone as your vertical speed increases.

    Audible glide angle

This is fantastic! I'm very interested, and maybe can help you out with coding, too. I'm working on my tracking skills using Etrex Vista C. For now, it's just postflight analysis, but I'm going to mount it on my cheststrap and view the altitude/distance plot in real time. The audible output is even better.
  15. Nick, Kevin: with reading like this, who wants to jump???????
  16. The best [WS] is yet to come. (c) Bill Gates
  17. Yes, that's what Brian Germain told me. How can a low time jumper practice this, though? There are no obstacles in the sky to practice
