hopefully not by law enforcement... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

a couple years ago, a freeflyer stopped by our dz for a few jumps. he was on the road inspecting towers (for Sprint, I believe). as he was paid per tower, he was a climbing fool! now if I had just got the combinations... can you please elaborate? have you attended any NPS meetings? have you commented on proposed NPS rules? have you contacted your congressional delegation? have you circulated petitions amongst your friends & coworkers? have you met with anyone from "the other side" to learn their views? have you tried to incorporate their opinions in a proposal? have you participated in a peaceful, non-jumping protest? have you wandered a park discussing the issues with visitors AND staff? remember, no one in government really wants to do anything, or take responsibility. and none wish to do ANYTHING quickly... Thanks! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

oh, if this were true... but it's not. the actions of the individual impact the entire community. if not, there would be no regular discussion of BASE ethics, no thread on if a mentor should assume responsibility for the decisions of their pupils, less criticism of Felix, no colorful stories of self-policing, and no one would cite Nick's list. yes, I'd like to take full responsibility for all my actions. it is the proper thing to do. then I'd only need consider my own narrow self-interests. very idealistic and unrealistic. the NPS will likely continue to view BASE jumpers in aggregate, not individually. so if the protest works, we all win. but if it fails, it puts all of us further from our goal. (and potentially kill any other avenue...) the entire community has a stake, but the decisions are restricted to a comparative few. the project is a high risk/high reward endeavor. is there even a precedent for success? a previous protest that guides the way? what's more likely, success? or another stain on our public record? yup, I'd say that makes it divisive. so is it possible that the jumpers themselves may not be aware that the police were even called? they might have thought the jump went unnoticed... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

very nice. good work. your efforts are appreciated. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

of course, I'd love to see some great footage from a sympathetic angle. but can it be done by jumpers? heavy handed law enforcement has confiscated lots of potential evidence... they may not be as good at pushing around established media... our nature is to remain hidden. generally, it's what we do. (of course, many objects DEMAND it.) and it can be both fun and rewarding. so why are we surprised when the public (or NPS) has such a distorted image of BASE jumpers? anything we can do that would raise our profile and display us as considerate and courteous would definitely help. Jason's idea, or Tom's request for today's meeting in Utah both seem like great ways to start. face it, protest jumps & rebellion have been tried in the past. and the result is? why should we expect any different today? can it hurt to have the rangers get to know us other than scofflaws? maybe after showing them some public respect, they might reciprocate. to exit the current stalemate, one side must act differently. so far, demanding THEY be the one to change simply has not worked. so why don't we give it a shot? I would be interested in a BASE specific First Aid Kit
wwarped replied to DexterBase's topic in Archive
i dont agree... DONT LEAVE ANYTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS.... uh, wouldn't it be a better idea to leave the first aid kit near the LZ? or would someone want to jump it down? and what happens if the LAST to jump ends up on a carnage dvd? the point of the orange IS to be visible! I envisage more people on the ground than in the air! aunts, cousins, whuffo's, significant others, etc. can all participate. remember the point of a protest IS to draw attention! heck, just people hiking the trails in this outfit, chatting with other visitors would be helpful. after reviewing another post, 24 July 2006 sounds like a great day... the 40th anniversary of the first bust! actually, that may not be necessary. everyone should wear the same thing, such as a black pro-tec, jeans, and an orange t-shirt printed for the event. they DON'T wear a rig, just a stash bag (again, all the same) stuffed with whatever. could be protest banners. even have a spare "kit" bag for the actual jumpers. (heck hide your real gear. you MIGHT avoid confiscation...) I'm betting a manufacturer would be happy to sew up 100 identical stash bags... non-jumpers would be welcome. unless they had good video set up, I doubt they could tell us apart... so, what would happen if only half the group actually jumped, the other half simply stood around AS IF they had landed? would they be able to prove whom had done what? or would they book everyone for "conspiracy?" who's up for hiding in the LZ, rigged up, and just walking out? ok, let me see if I got this straight... - you're a guy - you have a woman ON YOUR PHONE neediing a place to spend the night and the problem is???? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

just like aerials & wingsuit jumps, maybe you should consider some survival training before the jump? don't let survival sans cell phone become a lost art! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

on a recent trip, my buddy lugged 2 rigs around. no hassle, well, except for lugging 2 rigs around. several times he said, "watch my stuff." personally, I check mine. especially if traveling alone. I don't want to be getting cozy with my rig while sitting in a stall somewhere... huh? I must be missing something here... risers are made in a V shape. each "arm" passing through it's own slider grommet. if a riser releases on one side, those grommets will slide down the arms of the V (i.e. front and back risers) until they meet near the junction. thus, a slider tied to the attached riser, limits the released riser from ascending more than 3-4 feet. the canopy will stay inflated. just don't expect much control. evidently, it has saved at least one life. Rigging/Technical issues are an integral part of BASE and most current jumpers. I doubt it could be split cleanly. we all know skydivers who don't follow rigging issues. they could be future BASE jumpers. separating the technical side would enable people to avoid it. beware of the word "backcountry." it implies being out in the wilderness. the captain & half D are the signature features of that park. most "backcountry" activity is invisible to the general public. our "backcountry" activity would be readily seen by the hordes of visitors to the valley. how many people would be exposed to BASE and think it relatively easy? how many would see our activity as detracting from the natural beauty? the main point of all this is to consider what the impact legality would have on both the site and the sport. I've read great discussions on rigging details. I was hoping to see as much thought on this topic... we all agree with those sentiments. but you'd be greatly raising BASE's profile. that would accelerated the perceived rapid growth of, um, "less than ethical" jumpers. of course, the authorities would see no difference from --name your BASE hero-- to someone devoid of training. ALL BASE sites would be susceptible to increase activity from novices. does the obvious benefit outweigh the possible costs? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that side of the equation. so... what rules/conditions seem reasonable to this forum? any concern that it would be a high visibility activity in one of the country's most congested parks? any concern that virtually ANYBODY could mimic a highly trained BASE jumper? I've traveled to Norway. the SBK runs a remote sight that requires a boat to take you away from the landing area. there is no such limitations in the valley. I've read a lot of people concerned about the unmentored growth of the sport. wouldn't legal jumping of El C add tremendously to it? let's consider what we are asking for... please keep in mind... when I toss my pc out, I really hope it extracts my canopy before "things had settled out." the pc functions in tubulent conditions, not "steady-state." also, remember the pc is not fixed it space. the calculations are relative to the pc. what does the airflow look like behind an oscillating pc? ----- still, the screenshots demonstrate how a vented pc can be more efficient than a non-vented pc. now screenshots of a steady wind around a building would be easier to interpret... that could be VERY illuminating. BASE pilot chutes operate in a very turbulent environment. venting a pc correctly, this turbulence may be reduced. generally, the smoother the airflow, the easier it is to get air to actually perform usable work. i.e. the device becomes more efficient. so a vented pc might be able to generate the same forces as an unvented pc. much will depend on the design. Tom is correct. test a prototype extensively slider down/off. prove that the mods have potential to make things better. if so, then can it be refined to permit slider up operations? maybe reduce bulk by using Spectra (only in that region)? if successful... - jumpers will know which set is installed simply by checking in they're gear bag. (here are the reds, and the blacks, that means the GREENS are on the rig...) - with only one brake setting, jumpers will KNOW they were set evenly.
