  1. P.S. I understand that another sure fire way to tell is to bring another jumper, and have him grab the tower first. Stand by with a large (hence well insulating) stick to beat him with, to remove him from the circuit if the tower does turn out to be AM. I must disagree. I can not condone Tom's suggestion. DO NOT do that to a fellow jumper. get a whuffo instead. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

    Texas...

I was thinking the same thing... after relocating to southern LA, I'd enjoy a weekend in/around Houston.
  3. while this is not my area, it appears to depict the radiation strength as viewed from above the antenna. jump eastward to get the most radiation. jump northwest to get the least. 'course you ought to consider landing areas, prevailing winds, obstacles, etc. if a "great engineer" out there disagrees, please correct me! . advice..

amen. learn from the experience of others, build a solid knowledge base, then feel free to explore. adventure will find you, there is no need to go looking for it! 6. Or a bucket full of luck... Show me a thousand jumps from a hundred objects, and I'll compliment your ability to negotiate a wide variety of risks. Until then, the best we can do is assume, and hope for the best. hmmm, I was only commenting on WHY someone would want to jump all 4 kinds of objects. everyone must assess the risk for themselves. frequently, the less experienced assume more risk than they realize. more Richard Bach: "A fledgling leaps because it trusts its wings, a lemming leaps because everybody else is doing it. One's an adventure into new dimensions, the other's suicide." DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  7. In a word: History. It joins us to the generations of jumpers before us, and makes us feel the history and community of the sport. also, the challenge. each letter has it's own peculiarities. jumping all of them demonstrates an ability to negotiate a wide variety of risks. 10. just because you JUMP alone doesn't mean you can't take someone along as ground crew. see if a skydiving buddy will help out. while it is NOT the same, you can discuss canopy flight, landing areas, etc. they also might be able to give a very basic gear check. (dude, you know the bridle is caught...) even non-jumpers might have useful knowledge. some will have ideas on how to access an object. others might be trained paramedics. it will be up to you to decide if anything said is applicable to BASE, but 2 heads are far better than 1. use every resource available, then get creative! 12. yep, it sucks. I spent a couple days on an African train. after the second night on the train, my backpack had disappeared. it had rested on the rack above my head... as it took 2 days to get there, you can call the destination REMOTE. I knew no one there. and yes, my address book was lost in the backpack as well. I wasn't sure how I'd pay for a room, food, or a trip back to the capitol to sort things out. BD Long Lines

that landing area felt a lot tighter because of other canopies. my busiest landing followed a solo jump! I'm guessing that ramp can accomodate a furious pace. question: I thought I heard 1 empty boat must be available. jumping will wait until that time. but what if the next group is a 3-way? were all 4 boats empty for the 4-way birdman jump? 14. o.k., guys probably won't understand. men's fashion generally does not put our package on display. we don't shop for underwear with just the right fit. and really, most men probably can't compare sizes... with that out of the way, I basically know you from your posts. you strike me as an caring, intelligent, and articulate woman. that places you far above average. it's like standing on the edge. I don't really know what's going on in your skull. I won't tell you to jump. it's your call. 15. o.k., I've read threads regarding airport security checks and rigs. I've always wondered "why not put your rig in CHECKED luggage? why insist on carrying it on the plane?" advantages of checked in luggage: - less TSA security headaches - if everyone carried that much belongings on-board an aircraft, there is not enough overhead storage... - it can be burdensome to keep an eye on the rig during layovers. especially in a toilet stall... advantages of carry-on luggage: - knowing the rig gets there - knowing the rig will not get damaged - realizing that checking the rig will exceed your checked luggage allowance - wanting to know EXACTLY where your rig is people seen quite happy to SHIP gear. generally, the shippers expose parcels to far rougher treatment than the airlines. the few times I've heard of "lost" luggage, it has been found and forwarded in less than 1/2 day. soooo... has anyone had a rig stolen from checked baggage? has anyone had a rig damaged while in checked baggage? has a BASE trip been disrupted by a delayed checked bag and rig? like other things in BASE, I'd prefer making decisions based on facts, not fears. people regularly post about the hassles received trying to carry a rig onto a flight. what are the horror stories from people who check their rigs? are they common? thanks! 17. there really is no room for a debate, as I agree with you. problems should be addressed, but not dwelled upon. plans should be executed incrementally. learn the best practices from those who have gone before. my point was the extreme focus on negative events. focus on a negative, and you tend to receive it. I never said IGNORE them! you can acheive by sidestepping pitfalls, but rarely will you succeed by staring at them. 18. ...one of the things i wish ot achieve and therefore want to focus on in the next years is to make "safe" base-jumps someday. that's quite admirable. I wish you the best. a woman in a canopy control course focused on a hazard in the landing area. care to guess where she landed? if you focus on all the risks and the things to avoid, guess what will be in your head at the exit point? if you focus on perfecting your pack job, knowing your equipment, or training for flippy-dos (for you specifically, NOT yet!) guess what will be in your head? besides, I'm lazy. the list of correct things to do is far shorter than the list of wrong things! focus on doing what's right and naturally avoid what's wrong. oh, and no matter what course you choose, expect to be at an injury site. 19. why? granted, no one want to get hurt. no one wants to (again) carry someone out. redirect your energy to something you wish to achieve, not avoid. focus on your goals and motivations, not your fears. some people spend entire lives avoiding death, but still never live. 21. that's the only way to do it. it would suck to be injured thinking, "I did this to impress xxxx?" (oh yeah, DON'T get hurt!) find your own muse. then smile and laugh your way through life. congrats on your first jump. and welcome to the sport! 22. is this the same as the "leaked" rewrite previously posted & discussed? is anything different? is there a place for the public to send comments? it's great to see something happen. this time it's on the political front. one day, I hope it's in a courtroom! thanks! go for it! (I just wish I knew of an example where it worked...) Jon Dragen has already died once, and another dead icon isn't really something I would wish for, even if it is politically expedient. whoa, slow down a bit... in my part of the world, it doesn't take the death of an icon to draw a politician. I wish it didn't need to happen this year. surely we can come up with a bit more, positive way to attract politicians? oh, and anyone know why did the NPS let the last 2 jump after the extension expired? But in a strictly legalistic sense, NPS has the force of law behind them, and the governor does not. So it's all about political wherewithal, and who feels the need to please whom at any given time. I can't argue with your interpretation of legal realities. you know the law far better than I. the courts have provided little benefit. I'm thinking we must use the political angle. the more politicians we get on our side, the more pressure THEY can exert on the NPS. develop a new front in this war. heck, when else has BD got an extension? schedule a photo op every year! nice! well, what has proven successful? open conflict? I wonder... for the longest time, the park service got it's way. they had a firm grasp. they did what they pleased. no one could tell them otherwise. now with the attention from the CO congressman & the proposed re-write of their rules, might the NPS feel they have someone looking over their shoulder? additional rules is a classic way to maintain the status quo and avoid looking arbitrary (as in the past). so the windmeter & such might be a sign of weakness, not strength. edited to add: who ever heard of the NPS extending the time window? think it was THEIR idea? think they liked it? or is it likely the bowed to the will of the Govenor? think they like conceding power to a state official?
